ENHANCED DCE CLIENT FOR WINDOWS BETA PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT
_________________________________________________________
August 24, 1993
OPPORTUNITY: Today, IBM is initiating the ENHANCED DISTRIBUTED
COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT (DCE) CLIENT FOR WINDOWS BETA
PROGRAM. Orders for this program will be accepted
immediately with availability planned for September
1993. Function in the beta code enables IBM internals,
customer software developers and independent software
vendors to gain experience with the DCE technologies in
the WINDOWS environment. Further, the beta program
promotes application prototyping, development and
testing activities while providing feedback to IBM.
This beta code should NOT be used in production
environments.
FEATURES and FUNCTIONS: DCE is the Distributed Computing Environment,
a set of technologies provided through the Open
Software Foundation to enable development of
distributed applications in a multi-vendor environment.
The ENHANCED DCE CLIENT FOR WINDOWS is the
implementation of the Open Software Foundation's
DCE version 1.0.1, designed to execute on a Windows
3.1 based personal computer. The intent of DCE FOR
WINDOWS Beta code is to interoperate with AIX-DCE
servers and OS/2-DCE servers. To date, testing of
this interoperability has been limited.
This beta program contains the DCE CLIENT FOR WINDOWS
(Runtime) component only.
BETA SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: The DCE CLIENT FOR WINDOWS requires the
following:

o IBM (or IBM-compatible) personal computer with i386
or i486 processor (Minimum 25 Mhz processor
is recommended)
o Hard disk with at least 5 MB of free space
o Network adapter card supported by the TCP/IP used
(see software)
o 4 MB of memory (8 MB is recommended)
