ANNOUNCING WATCOM VX-REXX, A VISUAL SOLUTION BUILDER FOR OS/2
June 25, 1993
WATCOM announced VX-REXX on June 21, 1993, in Toronto, Canada, at the
IBM OS/2 Technical Interchange Conference. VX-REXX is a visual solution
builder which enables a broad new class of users to rapidly create rich
GUI applications for OS/2. VX-REXX is an easy-to-use, powerful and
fully integrated environment for creating applications that exploit the
power of OS/2 and the Presentation Manager graphical user interface.
VX-REXX operates with IBM's OS/2 REXX and includes a project management
facility, visual GUI form designer and interactive source level
debugger.
Unleashing the Power of OS/2 2.x
VX-REXX exploits the power of OS/2 and further enables developers to
exploit the power of OS/2 in their own applications.
- VX-REXX enables graphical creation of PM windows with CUA'91 objects,
simple customization of object properties, and association of REXX
code with object events.
- VX-REXX exploits multithreading, and allows applications to use
multithreading simply and effectively.
- VX-REXX uses the OS/2 2.x System Object Model (SOM) to implement its
object-oriented GUI run-time support. This will deliver extensibility and
interoperability with other languages such as C/C++.
- VX-REXX uses IBM's OS/2 REXX which is included with the OS/2 operating
system. This means that all API's which IBM provides for REXX are
available from VX-REXX, including DB2/2 and multi-media APIs such as
Ultimotion.
- The VX-REXX development environment and interactive debugger can be
used with existing OS/2 REXX code.
- VX-REXX exploits OS/2's 32-bit capability both at design time and
execution time.
- VX-REXX can be used as a scripting language for "REXX aware"
applications (e.g. EPM). In this role, the ability to easily create
scripts which use the PM GUI considerably enhances the power of REXX
as a scripting language.
VX-REXX Highlights
VX-REXX supports IBM standard REXX and provides advanced capabilities
including:
- Easy to use visual development environment
- Dynamically create and modify GUI objects at both edit and run time
- Powerful project management facility
- Advanced interactive source-level debugger
- Packaging of user applications as both EXE files or PM macros
- Support for multithreaded applications
- Include OS/2 style help and hints in user applications
- Integrated console window for easy migration of existing REXX code
- Access to standard REXX API's including DB2/2
- System Object Model (SOM) based object manager
Pricing
VX-REXX has a suggested retail price of $299 (US). Until September 30,
1993, VX-REXX is available for an introductory price of $99 (US)
including royalty-free runtime. There is special pricing for IBMers
of $74 (US) until July 31, 1993.
