THAI VERSION OF OS/2 2.1 ANNOUNCED IN BANGKOK
October 21, 1993
Almost 800 persons representing more than 300 firms and organizations
attended the announcement and demonstration of the Thai version of OS/2
2.1 in Bangkok this month. The attendance far exceeded the initial
estimates of attendees and demonstrated how much interest there is for
the National Language version of OS/2.
Held in the ballroom at the Bangkok Shangri-La Hotel, the announcement
was a full day event starting with the initial address and product
announcement by Charnchai Charuvastr, IBM Thailand's general manager,
and a keynote on PSP's OS/2 and Workplace direction by Andy Wilkinson,
Marketing and Support Manager for Asia Pacific PSP. These were followed
by product demonstrations and a series of presentations on Lan Systems,
MultiMedia and Development Tools. Almost all sessions were standing room
only while the dealer and ISV booths outside the main tent were selling
OS/2 and 32 bit applications steadily throughout the day.
"OS/2 2.1 Thai Solution" stems from a nine-month local development
effort from the OS/2 team in Thailand. Users can use the unique Thai
language without modification, a feature essential for software in the
growing Thailand marketplace.
Introduction of the product has received widespread favorable media
coverage in Thailand including a page-one article in the Bangkok Post.
The customer response has also been very positive with many of the large
Thailand accounts asking for additional information or on-site product
demonstrations.
The Thai version of OS/2 2.1 supports a total of 15 Thai fonts. Users
also may use additional Thai fonts available through application
software.
Charnchai Charuvastr, in announcing the product, said "IBM Thailand is
pleased to announce that we have the best technology to offer to our
customers. OS/2 2.1 Thai Solution is not only the best and most
efficient operating system but also developed to suit the needs and
wants of Thai customers."
"Introduction of the Thai version of OS/2 2.1 also demonstrates IBM's
commitment to maintaining technology leadership in Thailand."
