SYNTEGRATION INC. SHIPS
THE SECURE WORKPLACE FOR OS/2 VERSION 4.10 PROFESSIONAL EDITION
Chino, California, October 21, 1996 -- Today Syntegration, Inc. started
shipping The Secure Workplace for OS/2 V4.10 Professional Edition. New and
improved features include File Access Control, Multiple Desktop Management,
Internal User Identification and Authentication, Single Sign-on, Audit Trail
Viewer, Lockup Screen Saver, and <Ctrl+Alt+Del> plus <Alt+F1> disablement.
The Secure Workplace for OS/2 V4.10 Professional Edition, includes an
Installable Security System (ISS) for IBM's OS/2 Security Enabling
Services (SES). The ISS allows administrators to enforce file access
control permissions on a user, or group basis.
"The Secure Workplace for OS/2 V4.10 Professional Edition provides C2 level
security for OS/2 WARP. File access control has been a major deficiency
with OS/2. With our SES device driver that deficiency no longer exists.
The Secure Workplace makes OS/2 WARP competitive with Windows NT in
the security arena. You can give users a command prompt without
fear that they might damage the system, or defeat the security" said Stephen
Fox, Syntegration's President.
The Professional Edition requires OS/2 Warp V3.0 with FIXPAK 17 or greater,
or OS/2 Warp Version 4.XX. In addition, you must also install OS/2 Security
Enabling Services prior to installing The Professional Edition. The
Secure Workplace for OS/2 Standard Edition supports all versions of OS/2
from V2.11 onward.
At startup, The Secure Workplace V4.10 presents the user
with a sign-on window that prompts for the user identification and password.
The user can also use the sign-on window to change their password or shutdown
the system. An auto guest capability is available for customers that
want to bypass the sign-on window. The Workplace Shell starts after the user
has been identified and authenticated.
All editions of The Secure Workplace for OS/2 version 4.10 enable
single sign-on to a network operating system or remote host.
With this feature, users only identify and authenticate themselves once.
Single sign-on is accomplished by interfacing with the Network Sign on
Coordinator (NSC), User Profile Manager (UPM), or your own custom program.
NSC & UPM are provided with OS/2 Warp Connect, IBM LAN Server,
IBM LAN Requester, and OS/2 Warp Server.
A Security Administration notebook is provided to give administrators a
centralized way to configure the system. With this Administration Notebook
you can configure the Security Policy, Desktop Management, Audit Trail,
Single Sign-on, Users, Groups, and Access control privileges. A Privilege
page is also included in every object's settings notebook. These Privilege
pages give administrators the ability to grant privileges at the Workplace
object level. "Version 4.0X users have made positive remarks about the ease
and intuitive nature of the Administration notebook," said Fox. "In version
4.10 we improved the User and Group definition pages, added a Resource
access control page, and a Who Am I capability."
The Secure Workplace Access control definitions allow you to
grant privileges for Workplace object styles, Workplace object pop-up menus,
files, and directories. Workplace object style and pop-up menu permissions
include open, visibility, delete, copy, move, rename, settings, drag, drop,
help, create another, and create shadow. Folder object permissions include
object permissions as well as select, sort, arrange, find, details view,
tree view, and open parent. Desktop permissions include object permissions,
folder permissions, as well as shutdown, lockup, and system setup.
Workplace Drive object permissions include object permissions,
folder permissions as well as check disk, copy disk, and format disk.
File and directory permissions include the appropriate workplace
object permissions as well as read, write, execute, and set attributes.
All editions of The Secure Workplace V4.10 include a pluggable desktop
management facility. With this facility you can build a new desktop, restore a
desktop, or switch to another existing desktop after a user signs-on. "By
pluggable we mean you can use third party desktop management software to do the
work," said Fox. "We include our own product called Traveling Workplace in the
Professional edition. We also provide a reference manual that uncovers the
undocumented secrets to desktop management with OS/2."
All editions of The Secure Workplace V4.XX have the capability to perform
desktop management by dynamic visibility. "By granting or denying the
visibility privilege to an object you can make the OS/2 desktop appear
differently to each user. This is what we mean by dynamic visibility," said
Fox. "Dynamic visibility is an easy industrial strength approach to desktop
management because you are not constantly changing the desktop."
All editions of The Secure Workplace for OS/2 V4.10 include an audit trail
capability. The audit trail tracks all user activities. Administrators can
configure the product to record the audit information locally and/or remotely
on a file server. File server based auditing, gives administrators the ability
to collect audit information from multiple workstations in an enterprise
network. The audit trail viewer lets you sort the audit trail by date, time,
station name, user, or event. With the professional edition you can also select
the security events you want to audit. "Version 4.10 represents a dramatic
improvement in our audit trail facility," said Fox. "We added a background task
to backup the log file every day and purge audit trail records after an
administrator defined number of days. Users will also experience an overall
increased in performance especially in the network environment."
All editions of The Secure Workplace for OS/2 V4.10 includes a lockup screen
saver. This facility is activated after an administrator defined time-out.
After the screen saver is activated, the user must re-enter the sign-on password
or sign-off to regain access to the workstation. "We hook the Desktop lockup
screen saver so customers can continue to use the configuration in the desktop
settings notebook," said Fox.
The Secure Workplace for OS/2 V4.10 Professional Edition allows administrators
to disable the Ctrl+Alt+Del key combination to prevent unauthorized rebooting
of the system. This capability is not available in the Standard Edition.
"This is a feature that customers have been wanting for years," said Fox.
"You can also take away the shutdown items from the desktop pop-up menu, the
launchpad, and the user sign-on window. If you have a system that must run
24 hours a day 7 days a week and you want to prevent accidental shutdown
then The Secure Workplace is the product for you."
All editions of The Secure Workplace for OS/2 V4.10 can disable the ALT+F1 key
combination at system startup. This prevents users from restoring an
unprotected desktop or accessing a command prompt. The professional edition
also lets you define an ALTF1SEC.CMD program that will be executed instead
of the standard archive recovery procedure.
To summarize, The Secure Workplace for OS/2 V4.10 professional edition contains
the following features over an above the standard edition.
o OS/2 Security Enabling Services File access control driver.
o <Ctrl+Alt+Del> disablement.
o Traveling Workplace multiple desktop manager.
o Selective security event auditing.
o ALTF1SEC.CMD alternative archive recovery.
In all other respects the Standard edition is identical to the Professional
edition. In fact, the Professional edition is upwardly compatible with
the standard edition. In other words, The Professional Edition will install on
top of the Standard Edition and re-use the administrative configuration.
The Secure Workplace V4.10 ships in Standard and Professional Editions. The
Standard Edition lists for US$79.95. The Professional Edition lists for
US$120.00. Additional or site Licenses are available for both editions.
Registered users of The Secure Workplace for OS/2 can upgrade to version 4.10
standard Edition for $29.95, and to the version 4.10 professional edition for
US$45.00.
