  18.         NEW SOFTWARE FIRM MAKES NOISY DEBUT

  20. BOCA RATON - Two former IBM software contractors, Zan Oliphant and Bill
  21. Stewart have opened their own software development company, BocaSoft.

  23. Open only since January, the new company already has its first product
  24. ready to ship. Called System Sounds for OS/2, the product has five main
  25. features, all centering around its ability to associate an audio file
  26. (sound) to a pre-defined system event. For example, using an audio sound
  27. to respond to a help request with, "Standby, starting help!" Or simply
  28. using sounds to signal the opening and closing of folders, system startup
  29. and shutdown and the drag and drop of icons. One interesting and noisy
  30. program twist: the capability of associating sounds to mouse buttons or
  31. even mouse movement.

  33. Another system feature is the ability to link audio to any key on the
  34. keyboard. The feature could prove to be a boon to avid game players
  35. interested in spicing things up by adding unusual sounds to the
  36. appropriate keys or the operators of specialized programs benefiting from
  37. audio feedback.

  39. System Sounds for OS/2 has over 1 megabyte of sound effects in Microsoft
  40. audio format including a full range of popular effects from Prosonus.

  42. Sound recordings are possible in a variety of formats including 11 kHz, 22
  43. kHz, 44 kHz, 8 bit, 16 bit, as well as stereo or mono recording.

  45. "OS/2 is the operating system of choice for state-of-the-art multimedia 
  46. applications," said Bill Stewart, BocaSoft co-founder. "We're writing
  47. programs to take advantage of its 32 bit power," he added.

  49. The software requires the OS/2 multi-media extension set, or MMPM/2, which
  50. will be packaged with IBM's upcoming release of OS/2 (2.1). BocaSoft's
  51. System Sounds for OS/2 is available now for OS/2 (2.1) beta users.
