  1. UPS GOES ON THE ROAD WITH OS/2

  5. Roadnet Technologies, a subsidiary of United Parcel Service (UPS),
  6. uses IBM's OS/2* to help companies ship their products from their
  7. warehouses to your supermarket!

  9. Developed on OS/2 Versions 2.0 and 2.1, ROADNET 5000 is a computerized
  10. vehicle-routing and scheduling software package that informs wholesalers
  11. of the most efficient delivery route and schedule for their products.
  12. Companies such as Kraft Foods, Sysco Foods, and Entenmann's, for
  13. example, use the OS/2 application to minimize miles-on-the-road and
  14. other operating costs while maximizing driver productivity on the way to
  15. your retail stores.

  17. All in all, OS/2 and the Roadnet** package manage the entire product
  18. delivery process for many wholesalers.  With ROADNET 5000, daily orders
  19. are organized into geographically sequenced routes which yield the most
  20. cost efficient delivery patterns.  The application calculates least cost
  21. delivery routes, anticipated mileage and even the anticipated length of
  22. the delivery.

  24. Before using OS/2, the application developers at Roadnet had to contend
  25. with severe memory limitations of DOS.  Simply put, the Roadnet
  26. application was too large to run well on DOS.  Additionally, the
  27. existing text-based look-and-feel of the application was cumbersome for
  28. end users so even they were dissatisfied.  The idea of developing and
  29. shipping the application under the Windows environment was impossible.

  31. Using OS/2, the application developers were able to increase their
  32. productivity significantly.  In fact, today they often build their
  33. programs in one session, work on enhancements in another, and run
  34. electronic mail (E-mail) in a third session -- all at the same time.
  35. Now, because OS/2 protects their application's memory address space, the
  36. programmers find and fix memory-addressing problems sooner, improving
  37. their quality control down the road.

  39. End-users also are pleased that Roadnet is developing their application
  40. on OS/2.  The Workplace Shell graphical user interface provides a
  41. consistently behaved, attractive user interface.  Customers who use
  42. the application daily have become more productive and satisfied on the
  43. job.
