Future Versions of OS/2 to Support Apple's OpenDoc Object Technology
June 30, 1993
IBM's Personal Software Products Division yesterday announced that
it intends to support Apple** Computer Inc.'s OpenDoc for use with
future versions of the OS/2* operating system. OpenDoc is an open,
cross-platform software architecture designed to simplify the
sharing of complex documents in a multivendor environment.
OpenDoc also provides users with a more natural and flexible way
to create compound documents -- documents that include information
and media from many different applications. It also allows
developers to write applications that can handle different
kinds of objects, which are simpler to create and use.
Apple plans for OpenDoc to use IBM's System Object Model (SOM)
technology to package and execute parts (objects) of a compound
document. SOM provides an efficient and flexible object interface
and is based on the Object Management Group's standard for
distributed computing, Common Object Request Broker Architecture
(CORBA).
SOM is also language-neutral, allowing developers a choice of
programming languages to implement OpenDoc applications.
