PowerQuest, the File System Experts, Announce
PartitionMagic 2.0 for DOS, Windows, Windows 95 and OS/2
October 20, 1995, Orem, Utah--Any PC user interested in reclaiming
hundreds of megabytes of lost disk space, or in making Windows 95 more
efficient -- good news. PowerQuest Corporation today announced PartitionMagic
version 2.0. The product will ship in November and will support DOS/Windows,
Windows 95, and OS/2 in the 4th quarter.
In addition to allowing users to visually shrink, expand, move, and
convert partitions, Version 2.0 features dynamic cluster resizing. Another
new feature permits Win95 users to expand the size of the root directory to
accomodate more long file names. Version 2.0 also completely replaces the
FDISK and FORMAT utilities that have been shipping with DOS for a decade and a
half. Plus, users can now hide/unhide partitions to increase security.
PartitionMagic 2.0 allows computer users with large hard disks to reclaim
hundreds of megabytes of space that are lost due to inefficient cluster sizes.
"Many power users look at the cluster resizing feature as a kind of miracle,"
says Eric Ruff, PowerQuest's President. "The File Allocation Table (or FAT)
file system used by DOS, Windows, and Windows 95 (VFAT) was not written with
high-capacity hard drives in mind. The approximately 65,000 maximum
allocation units, called clusters, in the FAT architecture are adequate for
floppy disks and even smaller hard disks. But they are grossly inefficient
for a large hard disk resulting in hundreds of megabytes of wasted disk space.
PartitionMagic is the only product in the world that now allows users to
dynamically resize clusters to regain this disk space.
"For example, say you're trying to configure a 1.2gb partition. The
cluster size is 32K, but with PartitionMagic 2.0, as you resize a partition,
cluster sizes are automatically optimized to a more efficient size, like 2 or
4K."
PartitionMagic 2.0 contains features specifically for Windows 95 and
OS/2. For example, the standard Windows 95 installation creates a root
directory (C:\) with only 512 directory entries. This limitation severely
hinders the use of long file names in the root directory. A single long file
name could consume up to 20 entries. PartitionMagic for Windows 95 will allow
users to double root directory entries. In OS/2, the program features the
ability to convert FAT files to HPFS with the data in place.
As for replacing FDISK and FORMAT, "We've replaced an old utility that
has been unchanged for over a decade with a simple, graphical utility that
does more things faster," says John Christensen, Vice-President of Marketing.
PartitionMagic's main thrust has been easy partition restructuring. For
years, technical computer users like programmers and power users have
organized their hard disks by using multiple hard disk partitions. It gave
them more organization, security, and performance. However, the process of
creating and configuring multiple partitions on a hard disk was a difficult
and time-consuming process.
"Before PartitionMagic 1.0, modifying partitions on a hard drive was a
major pain in the neck," according to Ruff. "It could, literally, take all
day. First you had to back up everything on your hard disk. Next you had to
delete the partition with the FDISK utility--which destroys all your data on
the partition. Then you had to create and format a new partition. If the
partition had an operating system you had to reinstall it. Finally, you had
to restore all of the data that you had backed up. If you made any mistakes
or wanted another partition you had to repeat the entire process. Now with
PartitionMagic, users can modify their partitions in seconds."
"PowerQuest's mission is to bring the efficiency and organization of a
power user's hard disk to millions of non-technical users of DOS, Windows,
Windows 95, and OS/2," says John Christensen, Vice President of Marketing.
"With PartitionMagic 2.0, these users can now optimize their hard-disk
configurations like power users in just minutes without destroying any data.
Configuration tasks that previously required a full day or more can now be
done in less than five minutes."
PartitionMagic 2.0 will ship simultaneously in the 4th quarter for
DOS/Windows, Windows 95, and OS/2. Version 1.0 is currently the best-selling
product for OS/2 next to Warp, according to Indelible Blue, a major OS/2
reseller. PartitionMagic for DOS and Windows is "Windows 95 aware," a
particularly important feature for consumers and corporations that are
evaluating Windows 95.
"The only way to safely evaluate any new operating system, short of
renting a separate machine, is to test it in a separate partition," suggests
Michael Robertson, Vice President of Sales at PowerQuest. "PartitionMagic is
the only way to rapidly modify existing machines to create new partitions."
The company offers three licenses. In addition to the Personal License
for two machines, the company offers the Professional License for MIS managers
and system administrators who need to configure multiple machines. The
Professional License permits usage on an unlimited number of machines as long
as only one person is using it at a time. The company also offers an
Enterprise License. This version offers a powerful remote-configuration
utility that allows MIS managers to configure multiple machines simultaneously
from a single site.
Founded in March 1993 by Eric Ruff, PowerQuest is a privately held Utah
corporation located in Orem, Utah.
