  42. The Osrm2(tm) Lite Performance Monitor with Multi-User Performance
  43. Interface (MUPI) is a kernel level, real time, performance
  44. monitoring and management tool for system and application resource
  45. usage under OS/2 2.x, OS/2 SMP, and OS/2 Warp.  Including a
  46. configurable sample rate, performance threshold setting and alarms,
  47. working set, thread detail display, kill process options, as well as
  48. real time graphical indicators and long term data logging for post
  49. processing analysis, the Osrm2(tm) Lite Performance Monitor provides
  50. the most comprehensive monitoring tool for OS/2 2.x systems.

  52. Unlike other monitors, the Osrm2(tm) Lite Performance Monitor, Osrm2
  53. AppMon, Osrm2 FileMon, and Osrm2 CacheMon utilities work with
  54. information retrieved directly from the OS/2 kernel.  This is a
  55. superior, less intrusive, and less resource consumptive method of
  56. collection compared to other performance monitoring products.

  58. The product was designed to provide the hobbyist, small business
  59. owner, developer, corporate user, and network OS/2 analyst with
  60. informative performance and resource usage displays and reporting
  61. capability.  Osrm2(tm) Lite will be available April 2nd, 1995
  62. through popular OS/2 resellers and distributors.

  81. The Osrm2(tm) Lite Performance Monitor provides password protection,
  82. configuration control over all displays and process refresh timing,
  83. graph colors, save and restore window position and sizes, exception
  84. thresholds, and data logging file control.

  89. The Osrm2(tm) Lite Performance Monitor provides a number of displays
  90. to monitor all facets of system and application activity.  Following
  91. is a brief description of each:
  92.  
  93. System View        Cpu , Irq , dispatch counts, complete paging subsystem 
  94.                 information, memory information, swap size and growth 
  95.                 percentage, maximum active thread count, and cache activity. 
  96.                 The view is switchable from summary to detail, including 
  97.                 support for OS/2 SMP multiple processor activity.

  99. IO View          All logical partition (including floppy and CD-ROM drives) 
  100.                 Read/Write Count/Response/Bytes as well as hard-disk storage 
  101.                 available and used indicators. Communication ports 1-4 and 
  102.                 printer ports 1-2 are also monitored.

  104. App View        For each process, a summary of CPU, Dispatch, Page Faults, 
  105.                 Fault Wait time, File Wait time and Read/Write activity.

  107. LanServer        For Server, Requestor, and HPFS386 activity.

  109. Threads         From a selected process in Application View, display each 
  110.                 thread of the application. Displayed are: CPU Utilization, 
  111.                 Dispatch Counts, Page Faults, Page Fault resolution time, 
  112.                 and File wait time.

  114. Graph             Displays CPU Busy, Memory Used, and Swap Storage used
  115.                 percentage in line chart running for five (5)
  116.                 minutes of five (5) second refresh records.  When
  117.                 data line reaches end of X-axis, 20 percent of the
  118.                 display is scrolled back.  When graph is icon, data
  119.                 is still visible and the icon text displays the most
  120.                 recent records data values.

  128. The Osrm2(tm) Lite Performance Monitor provides a number of processes that 
  129. operate in the background during the monitoring session:
  130.  
  131. Logging         During the Osrm2(tm) Lite Performance Monitor session,
  132.                 data records can be stored to binary files.  C.O.L.
  133.                 Systems Inc.  has provided a REXX extension DLL for
  134.                 allowing REXX procedures to read and process the
  135.                 data for reports and analysis or populating database
  136.                 tables such as with IBM DB2/2 for OS/2.
  137.  
  138. Threshold         Configurable performance thresholds are tested against
  139.                 the data samples during the Osrm2(tm) Lite
  140.                 Performance Monitor session.  A dialog will pop-up
  141.                 when any threshold has been met or exceeded to alert
  142.                 the user.

  144. Utilities        Each of the Osrm2 Tools (AppMon, FileMon, CacheMon) can 
  145.                 be executed directly from the Osrm2 Lite menu. The Osrm2 
  146.                 Tools are described later in this document.

  152. is loaded by a REXX procedures (CMD file) to read the log file
  153. output from the Osrm2(tm) Lite Performance Monitor, Osrm2 AppMon,
  154. Osrm2 FileMon, and Osrm2 CacheMon utilities.

  156. Osrm2 AppMon Utility

  159. Allows the performance analyst to monitor any application thread and
  160. file measurements at intervals from 1 second to 45 minutes.  By
  161. creating a output log, the user can utilize the Osrm2(tm) Lite Rexx
  162. extension interface to create reports of all measurements.  AppMon
  163. can be started directly from the Osrm2 menu or from the Application
  164. Activity screen for a specific process.

  166. Osrm2 FileMon Utility

  170. and logical file measurements at intervals from 1 second to 45
  171. minutes.  By creating a output log, the user can utilize the

  186. Symmetrical Multiprocessor Support

  189. Osrm2(tm) Lite provides the same detail information on OS/2 SMP
  190. as it does on OS/2 2.11 or OS/2 Warp, and it does so with the same
  191. software. This means that if the user upgrades from a single
  192. processor implementation to SMP, Osrm2(tm) Lite will be there
  193. to provide the same level of quality performance monitoring.

  195. When SMP is detected Osrm2(tm) Lite will adjust the record
  196. information and allow the user to display either a summary
  197. of the sampled data or will break out the display for
  198. each processor. In addition, Osrm2(tm) Lite will collect
  199. detail information for post process support via the REXX
  200. extension.

  202. Osrm2(tm) Lite is itself scaleable to a SMP implementation.

  205. Multi-User Process Interface (MUPI) Technology
  206. ==============================================

  208. C.O.L.  Systems Inc.  has developed a new technology which allows
  209. the concurrent data collection by multiple processes from the OS/2
  210. kernel.

  212. Unlike other kernel level monitors, which only support access of
  213. only one process, MUPI can allow the user to run the Osrm2(tm) Lite
  214. Performance Monitor while running any or all of the Osrm2 Tools
  215. (AppMon, FileMon, CacheMon).

  217. Each process has control over it's data collection interval and
  218. logging through the MUPI technology.
  219.  
  220. This technology will form a base from C.O.L.  Systems Inc.  can
  221. introduce new enhancements such as concurrent network access, text
  222. based monitors, central data collection, third party products, etc.
