  1. OS/2 Presentation Manager (PM) - Status of Development

  3. "We are impressed with the capabilities of OS/2 and are supportive of
  4. the OS/2 direction," said Pete Peterson, executive vice president of
  5. WordPerfect Corporation.  "IBM is working closely with us to make sure
  6. we have the tools necessary to quickly create a native OS/2 2.0 version.
  7. With their help, we should have a good idea of how long the development
  8. effort will take by the end of this year (meaning 1991)."  Note:  As of
  9. February 11, 1992, no announcement concerning a release date has been
  10. made.

  12. Until a native OS/2 version is released, users can run WordPerfect 5.1
  13. for Windows on OS/2 version 2.0 when available.

  15. When the product becomes available, licensed users of WordPerfect 5.1
  16. for DOS or Windows will be able to trade up to the new WordPerfect for
  17. OS/2 product for a reasonable cost.

  19. Eventually, WPCorp would like customers to be able to choose DOS,
  20. Windows, or OS/2 as their operating system and have WordPerfect
  21. available for each.  When a customer upgrades WordPerfect from one of
  22. these operating systems to another, the customer maintains
  23. rights to run both products on one machine.

  26. WordPerfect OS/2 - SAA/CUA Compliant
  27.  
  28. WordPerfect for OS/2 Presentation Manager will be SAA/CUA compliant.
  29. (SAA stands for Systems Application Architecture.  It is a standard set
  30. of user and software interfaces published by IBM to provide a common way
  31. for applications to be accessed on any computer from PC to mainframe.
  32. CUA stands for Common User Access.  It is a subset of SAA.  It defines
  33. general user interface design principles, such as use of the mouse,
  34. graphical windows, scroll bars, pull down menus, dialogue boxes and
  35. various controls.  The purpose of CUA is to provide usability and
  36. consistency within and across applications).  WordPerfect will comply
  37. with both CUA level 1 and CUA level 2.

  40. OS/2 Interface with DCA
  41.  
  42. WordPerfect for Presentation Manager is scheduled to have an option,
  43. which can be set as the default, to save documents directly in DCA
  44. format.  The program will also detect DCA during retrieval and convert
  45. it on the fly.  Effectively, the user will be able to work continually
  46. in DCA without having to worry about it.  They would simply lose any
  47. WordPerfect codes that DCA does not support.  The save dialogue box
  48. would allow them to see what format they're saving, and let them change
  49. it each time they save, if they would like.
