IBM and German consulting firm announce Microkernel evaluation
agreement
AUSTIN, Texas, and MUNICH, Germany, Sept. 25, 1995 . . . IBM
and consulting firm Solutions E.T.C., GmbH, of Germany, today
announced they have entered into an agreement for Solutions
E.T.C. to evaluate the IBM Microkernel technology for migrating
real-time applications to modern hardware architectures.
According to Dr. Thomas Lemmer, managing director of Solutions E.T.C.,
Germany, his company will utilize the IBM Microkernel to develop
personality servers which closely resemble well-known real-time
operating systems, thereby preserving customers' investments in
existing real-time application software.
"Using the IBM Microkernel, we will be able to provide our
customers with the ability to seamlessly migrate their current
applications to modern hardware architectures such as PowerPC* or
Alpha**," said Julian Wolff, technical director, Solutions E.T.C.
As a first step, Solutions E.T.C. will explore the
possibility of developing a VAXELN** personality on top of the
IBM Microkernel.
The IBM Microkernel allows companies to leverage their
software investments through the microkernel's scalability,
portability and modularity. It provides a new way to structure
system software by reducing complexity and increasing the range
of hardware and system configurations that are supported by an
operating system implementation. The IBM Microkernel also
provides support for the microprocessor, memory management,
initialization and devices in the hardware.
Solutions E.T.C., GmbH, is a partner of Solutions E.T.C.
Inc., Woburn, Mass. Solutions E.T.C. is a worldwide consulting
firm with offices in the United States, Germany and the Middle
East.
