MetaWare Offers High-Performance Solution
to the Pentium Floating-Point Division Problem
SANTA CRUZ CA, December 22, 1994 -- C and C++ native and cross compilers
with a software work-around for the Pentium floating-point division
error will be available from MetaWare Incorporated in January 1995. By
offering this workaround on the heels of the Intel announcement of the
Pentium problem, MetaWare has demonstrated its ability to quickly adapt
to the changing needs of professional software developers. These
compilers are part of MetaWare's family of high-performance,
ANSI-conforming High C/C++ offerings for professional developers.
MetaWare High C/C++ (TM) for extended DOS, Windows, and OS/2 on Intel
platforms will offer compiler controls that check for the existence of
the Pentium floating-poin or and generate Intel-compliant versions of
Pentium-safe floating-point divide code when needed. "The generated
code is safe for all representations of single, double, and
extended-precision numbers, and the core routines used in the fix are
fully compliant with the Intel-approved software workaround" said Dr.
Thomas Pennello, MetaWare's co-founder and vice president.
Additionally, High C/C++ has added new functionality that reports the
number of times a bad division result could occur without Pentium-safe
floating-point division code. This allows developers to analyze
increases to execution time that result when using a software solution.
According to David Wilcox, manager of technical support at MetaWare,
"The software solution will be made available to customers with current
versions of High C/C++ for extended DOS, Windows, and OS/2. New versions
of High C/C++ for extended DOS, Windows and OS/2 will include the
Pentium fix."
