IBM LAN Server 4.0 Makes Networking Fast and Easy
September 12, 1994
NETWORLD+INTEROP, ATLANTA, Sept. 12, 1994 . . . IBM's LAN Server 4.0,
announced today, is raising the bar for network operating systems
with new features that provide unmatched usability, interoperability
and scalability.
"LAN Server 4.0 is easy to use and easy to grow, making it the
best network operating system for small and medium businesses and
for large enterprise installations," said Phil Powers, director of
marketing, LAN Systems, IBM Personal Software Products division.
LAN Server 4.0 is available in Entry and Advanced versions. Both
versions have a new graphical user interface which includes
drag-and-drop administration and enables users to launch features
with a click of the mouse.
A simple "Up and Running" manual answers the questions most
commonly asked during the first 90 days of use. These enhancements
simplify the process of running a network so customers can spend
their time running their businesses.
The product provides two installation options. The Easy Option
installs the product in minutes, self-configuring to fit the LAN
environment. For more customized installations, the Tailored option
allows an experienced network administrator to fine-tune the
product for a unique environment.
LAN Server 4.0 supports most popular Ethernet and Token Ring
adapters, many of which are automatically identified and connected
during installation. (A list is attached.)
LAN Server supports OS/2, DOS, Windows, Macintosh, Windows for
Workgroups and Windows NT clients. DOS clients are provided with
a unique graphical user interface, and the new DOS Requester
provides significant improvements in performance and memory use,
leaving more than 600KB available for applications. LAN Server 4.0
also supports symmetric multiprocessing, now available in OS/2 2.11.
Small and Medium Networks
LAN Server 4.0 Entry is ideal for small and medium-sized networks.
The simplified installation and drag-and-drop administration require
no special skills to set up the LAN. Hardware costs are reduced
since LAN Server does not require any specific dedicated server
hardware. And, in addition to full server functionality, the peer
services capability included with LAN Server allows users to directly
share resources such as printers, files and CD-ROMs between clients.
LAN Server networks can grow easily and economically as a business
grows. Customers can expand their networks by adding clients or
additional servers without paying a tiered-pricing penalty. Upgrading
from Entry to Advanced is as simple as installing the Advanced product.
Data and applications do not need to be reloaded. In the same way,
both Entry and Advanced are completely upgradable from previous
versions.
Gaylord Container Corp., a paper company with 300 employees in Pine
Bluff, Ark., is using the LAN Server 4.0 beta on a small LAN with one
server.
"It's been fantastic," said Don Degner, computer processing control
engineer. "It makes resource sharing easy, without requiring extra
work.
"I really like the native transparency of the drive access. It's
great to be able to go to any session and automatically know what
resources are there. We have two PCs and we share a common hard
drive for all our programming applications, so this transparency
saves us duplication and version problems," he said.
Large Network Features
For larger customers and enterprise networks, LAN Server 4.0 offers
all of its ease-of-use features as well as powerful macros, 32-bit
APIs and a REXX programming interface which can be used to simplify
repetitive and complex tasks. New management features include
cross-domain administration, disk-user limits and a set of problem
determination applets.
LAN Server Advanced continues to provide industry-leading
performance and superior facilities for large and growing networks.
In addition to the features offered by the Entry version, Advanced
includes fault tolerance, Pentium optimization and a high-performance
file system for improved security and enhanced performance.
LAN Server 4.0, a key element of IBM's client/server strategy,
underscores IBM's commitment to open systems by providing the base
for distributed computing. IBM plans to offer open, industry-standard
distributed computing services to deliver Global Directory, Security,
and Remote Procedure Call from the Distributed Computing Environment
as an extension to LAN Server 4.0.
LAN Server 4.0 is the newest member of a full line of IBM personal
systems software including the award-winning OS/2 operating
system and LAN products for remote access, multimedia, systems and
network management, database and transaction processing, and
communications. In addition to OS/2, LAN Server technology is
available on a variety of operating system platforms including
OS/400, AIX, MVS and VM.
More than 600 products have been certified to run with LAN Server
through IBM's "Ready! for IBM LAN" and "Tested and Approved for IBM
LAN Systems" product certification programs. In addition, since
testing began in May 1994, nearly 1,000 individuals worldwide have
earned IBM professional certification, providing a specialized
service and support force for IBM OS/2 and LAN Systems products.
Because of its enhanced usability, LAN Server 4.0 is now the ideal
offering for small and medium businesses and is leading IBM's effort
to launch LAN Systems products into the reseller market. IBM is
offering resellers enhanced marketing service and support programs
through its BESTeam program to make it easier and more profitable for
them to sell LAN Server and many other IBM products. In addition to
the IBM direct marketing force, LAN Server 4.0 will be available from
a wide array of network and systems integrators, authorized resellers,
and OEMs.
"Gates/Arrow is very excited by the opportunity to sell IBM's
LAN Server 4.0 to our large networking VAR base," said Andy Heyman,
vice president of merchandising for Gates/Arrow, Greenville, S.C.
"As a very successful connectivity distributor, we understand how
important service and support are for VARs, and IBM has an outstanding
program in BESTeam to serve our customers' needs."
List prices are $795 for the Entry version and $2,295 for
the Advanced version.
