  14.      TO DISTRIBUTED RELATIONAL DATA

  16.      A key to thorough testing of client/server applications

  19.      FARMINGTON HILLS, MI -- Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ: CPWR) today 
  20.      announced DATA-XPERT, a powerful new tool that aids developers in 
  21.      fully testing client/server applications by automating the otherwise 
  22.      time-consuming, cumbersome process of creating high-quality test data. 
  23.      DATA-XPERT also helps developers quickly identify and correct 
  24.      production data corrupted by application errors.

  26.      DATA-XPERT enables developers to easily obtain and modify relational 
  27.      data from any number of Oracle and DB2/2 databases located anywhere on 
  28.      a distributed network.

  30.      From DATA-XPERT's graphical desktop interface, developers can:

  32.      u Access and view data from multiple databases, simultaneously and 
  33.      transparently, regardless of DBMS type or location.  
  34.      u Copy and paste selected data from remote databases into test tables.
  35.      u Quickly tailor data to fit specific test conditions using a 
  36.      spreadsheet-like interface.
  37.      u Automatically generate new test data, if no production data exists. 
  38.      DATA-XPERT provides the ability to repeat rows and fill columns with 
  39.      new data, based on developer-defined parameters.
  40.      u Isolate and resolve problems with production data. Developers can 
  41.      work with remote databases without violating security mechanisms.

  43.      Helping developers work faster, more accurately
  44.      DATA-XPERT eliminates the otherwise necessary tasks of writing SQL 
  45.      code, scripts or one-time programs to access data or manually entering 
  46.      data into test tables one row or transaction at a time.

  48.      "It's important to us to have test data that simulates the real world 
  49.      conditions our programs may encounter. But we were stuck without a 
  50.      simple way to create that test data from DB2/2. We had to know SQL and 
  51.      our data very well," said Darrell Harper, a utilities specialist at 
  52.      USAA, a San Antonio-based insurance and financial services company. 
  53.      Harper has evaluated a beta version of DATA-XPERT. "I see DATA-XPERT 
  54.      as the tool we're going to use to take our DB2/2 data, change it and 
  55.      get on with running our test cases."

  57.      Accessing multiple databases simultaneously, transparently
  58.      Compuware intends to support other operating systems and additional 
  59.      database management systems in future releases of DATA-XPERT. The 
  60.      company also plans to give developers access to DB2 data on the 
  61.      mainframe from the DATA-XPERT desktop interface by integrating the 
  62.      product with Compuware's File-AID for DB2 tool.

  64.      "In today's distributed computing environment, more companies store 
  65.      data in different DBMSs and in different sites," said Christine 
  66.      Galloway, general manager of Compuware's industry-leading file and 
  67.      data management products. "Developers no longer face accessing those 
  68.      databases one at a time. DATA-XPERT lets them get their hands on all 
  69.      the data they need as easily as if it were stored in the same 
  70.      database."

  72.      DATA-XPERT's architecture reduces network traffic and, as a result, 
  73.      improves response time. It can process a data-related request at 
  74.      either the client or server level, depending on which makes the most 
  75.      sense. Moreover, the product eases the learning curve of mainframe 
  76.      programmers transitioning to client/server by providing an optional 
  77.      ISPF mode.

  79.      Pricing and availability
  80.      DATA-XPERT Release 1.0 is expected to be generally available from 
  81.      Compuware (1-800-306-5081) later this month on the OS/2 platform, and 
  82.      will access Oracle and DB2/2 databases. DATA-XPERT will be offered at 
  83.      introductory prices of $250 per client copy ($500 list price) and $500 
  84.      per server copy ($750 list price).
