NUMBER OF DISKETTES IN OS/2* 2.1 PACKAGE REDUCED
June 22, 1993
IBM Personal Software Products has reduced the number of diskettes in
its OS/2 2.1 package. A different file compression method was used to
reduce the number of diskettes required for OS/2 2.1. The function and
features in the reduced diskette package are exactly the same as the
original diskette package. No changes were made except for the file
compression method. THIS ANNOUNCEMENT APPLIES TO THE US VERSION OF THE
PRODUCT ONLY.
The original diskette package contains:
25 3.5-inch diskettes with blue labels
or
31 5.25-inch diskettes with blue labels.
The reduced diskette package contains:
20 3.5-inch diskettes with salmon labels
or
25 5.25-inch diskettes with salmon labels.
The update in packaging also affects the CD-ROM package, since the CD-ROM
contains diskette images. The color of the labels, blue or salmon, indicates
whether or not it is the reduced diskette version.
Once a package is installed, you can determine which package is on your system
by looking at the system operating level, or syslevel. The syslevel can be
obtained by typing SYSLEVEL at an OS/2 Command Prompt. The information under
the heading "IBM Base Operating System" indicates the package as follows:

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
1. Q: How is this announcement being made?
A: This announcement is being made through the standard IBM communications
vehicles, including INEWS, OS2BBS, CompuServe**, HelpCenter, Support
Center and HONE.
2. Q: How does this reduced diskette package affect me?
A: The only users affected by the package difference are those who
installed OS/2 2.1 and want to install new device drivers or
selectively install other features, but do not have the diskettes that
match the installed software.
3. Q: What impact will this have on the general availability of OS/2 2.1?
A: This does not affect the general availability of OS/2 2.1.
4. Q: When will this new reduced diskette package begin shipping?
A: The shrinkwrapped copies will begin shipping in late June 1993.
5. Q: What new features/functions will I get with the reduced diskette
package?
A: There are no changes to OS/2 2.1. The only change is in the file
compression/decompression algorithm and the organization of the
shipped files.
6. Q: Does the reduced diskette package have a reduced price?
A: No, the reduced diskette package cost was considered in the current
price of OS/2 2.1.
7. Q: Will the "product on the shelf" be identifiable as to the packaging?
A: No. The outside of the box is the same.
8. Q: Does this affect preload backup diskettes?
A: Yes, there will be two different part numbers. Backup diskettes must
be matched to the preloaded software. The original part number is
61G0907, and the reduced diskette package part number is 71G4091.
The label colors will also be different.
9. Q: What effect does this change have on me as a preload machine user?
A: There is no effect on a preload machine. You will be affected only if
you have one package installed on your system and must use the other
package to make changes, such as for selective install.
10. Q: Will I get new backup diskettes for my preload machine?
A: The diskettes provided with your preloaded system will match the
packaging of software that was preloaded. There will be no need to
get a new set of backup diskettes.
11. Q: If my machine has the original package installed and I only have the
reduced diskette package available to add additional features, can I
still use selective install?
A: Yes. You will need to obtain the OS/2 2.1 Compression Compatibility
Package from one of the support mechanisms, such as CompuServe,
the OS2BBS, the HelpCenter or IBM Support Center. Instructions will
be provided.
12. Q: If my machine has the reduced diskette package installed and I only
have the original package available to add additional features, can I
still use selective install?
A: Yes. See the answer to Question 11 above.
13. Q: Does this have any impact on me when I call the HelpCenter or IBM
Support Center for support?
A: No. It is recommended that you be aware of which package you are
running prior to requesting assistance. This could help facilitate
a quicker turnaround on your call.
14. Q: What changes must be made at my site to accommodate both packages
of the system in the network?
A: None. Once installed, there is no functional difference between the
original package and the reduced diskette package.
It is recommended that users on a local area network standardize on one
package or the other. This will ensure a consistent system view that
will be easier to maintain, upgrade, and support.
15. Q: Will the product documentation in the shrinkwrapped box include the
instructions for migrating from one package to another?
A: No. Because the products are exactly the same, except for the
compression method, there is no need for migration instructions to be
included in the box.
