  1. NUMBER OF DISKETTES IN OS/2* 2.1 PACKAGE REDUCED

  5. IBM Personal Software Products has reduced the number of diskettes in
  6. its OS/2 2.1 package.  A different file compression method was used to
  7. reduce the number of diskettes required for OS/2 2.1.  The function and
  8. features in the reduced diskette package are exactly the same as the
  9. original diskette package.  No changes were made except for the file
  10. compression method.  THIS ANNOUNCEMENT APPLIES TO THE US VERSION OF THE
  11. PRODUCT ONLY.

  13. The original diskette package contains:
  14.  
  15.      25  3.5-inch diskettes with blue labels
  16.                      or
  17.      31  5.25-inch diskettes with blue labels.
  18.  
  19. The reduced diskette package contains:
  20.  
  21.      20  3.5-inch diskettes with salmon labels
  22.                      or
  23.      25  5.25-inch diskettes with salmon labels.
  24.  
  25. The update in packaging also affects the CD-ROM package, since the CD-ROM
  26. contains diskette images.  The color of the labels, blue or salmon, indicates
  27. whether or not it is the reduced diskette version.

  29. Once a package is installed, you can determine which package is on your system
  30. by looking at the system operating level, or syslevel.  The syslevel can be
  31. obtained by typing SYSLEVEL at an OS/2 Command Prompt.  The information under
  32. the heading "IBM Base Operating System" indicates the package as follows:

  47. 1.  Q:  How is this announcement being made?
  48.  
  49.     A:  This announcement is being made through the standard IBM communications
  50.         vehicles, including INEWS, OS2BBS, CompuServe**, HelpCenter, Support
  51.         Center and HONE.

  53. 2.  Q:  How does this reduced diskette package affect me?
  54.  
  55.     A:  The only users affected by the package difference are those who
  56.         installed OS/2 2.1 and want to install new device drivers or
  57.         selectively install other features, but do not have the diskettes that
  58.         match the installed software.

  60. 3.  Q:  What impact will this have on the general availability of OS/2 2.1?
  61.  
  62.     A:  This does not affect the general availability of OS/2 2.1.

  64. 4.  Q:  When will this new reduced diskette package begin shipping?
  65.  
  66.     A:  The shrinkwrapped copies will begin shipping in late June 1993.

  68. 5.  Q:  What new features/functions will I get with the reduced diskette
  69.         package?

  71.     A:  There are no changes to OS/2 2.1.  The only change is in the file
  72.         compression/decompression algorithm and the organization of the
  73.         shipped files.

  75. 6.  Q:  Does the reduced diskette package have a reduced price?
  76.  
  77.     A:  No, the reduced diskette package cost was considered in the current
  78.         price of OS/2 2.1.

  80. 7.  Q:  Will the "product on the shelf" be identifiable as to the packaging?

  82.     A:  No.  The outside of the box is the same.

  84. 8.  Q:  Does this affect preload backup diskettes?
  85.  
  86.     A:  Yes, there will be two different part numbers.  Backup diskettes must
  87.         be matched to the preloaded software.  The original part number is
  88.         61G0907, and the reduced diskette package part number is 71G4091.
  89.         The label colors will also be different.

  91. 9.  Q:  What effect does this change have on me as a preload machine user?
  92.  
  93.     A:  There is no effect on a preload machine.  You will be affected only if
  94.         you have one package installed on your system and must use the other
  95.         package to make changes, such as for selective install.
  96.  
  97. 10. Q:  Will I get new backup diskettes for my preload machine?
  98.  
  99.     A:  The diskettes provided with your preloaded system will match the
  100.         packaging of software that was preloaded.  There will be no need to
  101.         get a new set of backup diskettes.

  103. 11. Q:  If my machine has the original package installed and I only have the
  104.         reduced diskette package available to add additional features, can I
  105.         still use selective install?
  106.  
  107.     A:  Yes.  You will need to obtain the OS/2 2.1 Compression Compatibility
  108.         Package from one of the support mechanisms, such as CompuServe,
  109.         the OS2BBS, the HelpCenter or IBM Support Center.  Instructions will
  110.         be provided.

  112. 12. Q:  If my machine has the reduced diskette package installed and I only
  113.         have the original package available to add additional features, can I
  114.         still use selective install?
  115.  
  116.     A:  Yes.  See the answer to Question 11 above.

  118. 13. Q:  Does this have any impact on me when I call the HelpCenter or IBM
  119.         Support Center for support?
  120.  
  121.     A:  No.  It is recommended that you be aware of which package you are
  122.         running prior to requesting assistance.  This could help facilitate
  123.         a quicker turnaround on your call.

  125. 14. Q:  What changes must be made at my site to accommodate both packages
  126.         of the system in the network?
  127.  
  128.     A:  None.  Once installed, there is no functional difference between the
  129.         original package and the reduced diskette package.

  131.         It is recommended that users on a local area network standardize on one
  132.         package or the other.  This will ensure a consistent system view that
  133.         will be easier to maintain, upgrade, and support.

  135. 15. Q:  Will the product documentation in the shrinkwrapped box include the
  136.         instructions for migrating from one package to another?
  137.  
  138.     A:  No. Because the products are exactly the same, except for the
  139.         compression method, there is no need for migration instructions to be
  140.         included in the box.
