DCF/2 - The Data Compression Facility for OS/2
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
The DCF/2 is an "on-the-fly" data compression
facility which allows you to increase the effective
data storage capacity of your OS/2 computer system.
Using the DCF/2, you can expand your available hard
disk space - an average of 2.5:1 for typical user
file mixes.
If you have used traditional "on-the-fly" data
compression products -- get ready! The DCF/2 is
unlike anything you've used before. You don't need
to commit yourself or your entire system to data
compression in order to try it.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
No Repartitioning or Reformatting Required !
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
DCF/2 "Virtual Disk Units", or VDUs, are High
Performance File System (HPFS) formatted compressed
storage devices which are actually stored on your
existing disks. Any OS/2 disk can be used,
including FAT, HPFS, Floppies, and even LAN drives!
For example, if your system is FAT-only, you can
still enjoy the benefits of the HPFS file system
without changing anything!
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
DCF/2 Virtual Disk Units Grow Dynamically !
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
You can create DCF/2 VDUs even when you are almost
out of physical disk space. VDUs use physical disk
space dynamically, growing as you move your
uncompressed files into the compressed volumes.
For example, a fully formatted 512MB DCF/2 VDU
initially requires only about 256KB of physical
space!
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Try the DCF/2 Without Committing Your System !
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
The DCF/2's installation program is easy to use and
takes only a couple of minutes.
You do not have to commit your system to this new
capability. You select what programs, files, and
system information you wish to compress. OS/2 has
all of the tools to make this process easy and
totally transparent!
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Complete Online Help with OS/2 Hypertext IPF !
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
The DCF/2 documentation is fully supported online
in the OS/2 Information Presentation Facility format
for ease of access and printing, in addition to
the hardcopy documentation.
Hotkey to the DCF/2 online information and search
for whatever information you require! For example,
if you want suggestions on how to setup your system
for laptop/docking station usage, click on the DCF/2
VDU LED, up comes help, type in "DOCK" in the
search field, and click on "OK"!
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Graphical Virtual Disk Analysis Statistics !
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
At any time you can view real-time virtual and
physical drive statistics.
Hotkey settings allow you to bring up graphical
displays like the following:

The first display, above, shows the VDU's average compression ratio (ACR),
the content of the compressed volume, the amount of virtual storage (files
you have stored on the volume), and the amount of physical space that is
actually used.
The second display, above, show the physical drive information, including how
much space is in use on the 'host' drive where the VDU resides, how much space
is free, and the physical disk size.

The DCF/2 optimizer has five different, settable modes of operation which
offer a great deal of flexibility for you to customize its behaviour based on
how you work!
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Integrated Disk Compression Analysis Tool !
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
The DCF/2 comes complete with the DCAT, or Disk
Compression Analysis Tool which allows you to
measure exactly what compression results you will
get on any file or directory mix.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
OS/2 Version Support
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
This version of the DCF/2 allows you to create as
many virtual disk units as you have drive letters
available. You can 'put' those VDU's on any of
your existing disk units as long as you are running
OS/2.11 or OS/2 Warp.
If you are running OS/2 Warp and the High
Performance File System is not installed, you must
exit the DCF/2 install program and use OS/2's
SELECTIVE INSTALL feature (plus your OS/2 disks) to
install the HPFS. (It isn't difficult and requires
only a few minutes.)
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Try the DCF/2 Before Buying !
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Proportional Software provides users with a fully-enabled
"test drive" version of the DCF/2. This test drive version
is identical to a fully licensed version of the DCF/2 except
the license is only valid for 30 days. After 30 days, the
test drive version will not expire, but the user is expected
to purchase a valid license.
Test Drive Locations:

CompuServe OS2USER Library 4 (Applications)
Compuserve CANOPUS Library 5 (Software)

Test drive versions are updated frequently to match the
latest revision of the Full and Lite DCF/2 versions.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Need More Information or Ready to Buy ?
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
The DCF/2 has a suggested retail price of $149.95 for the
full version and $49.95 for the DCF/2 Lite. DCF/2 Lite is
identical to the Full DCF/2, except it only supports one
virtual disk unit.
Additionaly, Proportional offers a family of "Sampler VDUs"
which are pre-configured VDUs for use with the DCF/2. Call
and ask for addtitional information or VIEW the PSCPRD.INF
file in your DCF/2 program directory contained in the TRYDCF
test drive kits!
