OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
DB2/6000 VERSION 1, which includes the database engine and
database management functions, has been enhanced since announcement
with the following functions:
SUPPORT FOR LARGE DATABASES: DB2/6000 supports tables as large as 64
gigabytes and databases of up to 512 gigabytes.
HACMP SUPPORT: DB2/6000 is supported by IBM AIX High Availability
Cluster Multi-Processing/6000 (HACMP/6000) Version 2.1. HACMP/6000
enables clustered RISC System/6000 servers to recover from server,
disk, network, and network interface failure. The HACMP/6000 system
provides reliable, recoverable shared disk resources for
mission-critical commercial and online transaction processing
applications.
A fallover configuration defines the relationship among the
nodes in a cluster (in other words, how they access shared data and
handle node failure). The HACMP/6000 system supports five fallover
configurations, grouped into three modes:
o "Idle or Rotating Standby"
o "Partitioned or Mutual Operations Takeover"
o "The Concurrent Resource Manager Subsystem."
DATA BASE : ALTR - PAGE: 3
IDLE OR ROTATING STANDBY: This cluster has two nodes, but only one,
the server node, owns all the shared resources and provides highly
available services to clients. Only if this server node fails does
the standby node take control of the shared resources and provide
highly available services to clients.
To the end user, node failure looks like a machine reboot.
The end user simply logs onto the surviving node and restarts the
application. The logon and application restart procedures can be
driven by the HACMP/6000 configuration scripts.
The fallover configurations supported in "Idle or Rotating
Standby" are:
o Hot Standby
The server provides highly available services, while the
standby is idle. If the server fails, the standby takes over as
the server.
o Rotating Standby
The rotating standby configuration works in the same way
as the hot standby except for one key difference. The rigid
definition of server and standby does not apply. When the node
that was the initial server rejoins the cluster, it does not take
back the role of server. Rather, it becomes the standby.
o One-Sided Takeover
The server node (Server A) runs highly available
applications. The standby node (Server B) does not. If Server A
fails, Server B takes over the shared resources and services of
the server node's clients. If Server B fails, however, Server A
does not take over its disks since there are no highly available
applications to restart.
PARTITIONED OR MUTUAL OPERATIONS TAKEOVER: This configuration has
two nodes, each of which provides distinct highly available services
to cluster clients. For example, each node might be running its own
instance of a database that accesses its own disk. Thus, the shared
resources are divided, or partitioned, between the nodes.
Further, each node has takeover capacity. As with "Idle or
Rotating Standby," to the end user, node failure looks like a machine
reboot.
"Idle or Rotating Standby" and "Partitioned or Mutual
Operations Takeover" can be combined. The third-party takeover
configuration combines the standby of "Idle or Rotating Standby" with
the partitioned highly available workload of "Partitioned or Mutual
Operations Takeover." This combination allows a cluster to balance
its workload between two nodes and not suffer undue performance
degradation should one of the nodes fail.
THE CONCURRENT RESOURCE MANAGER SUBSYSTEM: Two active nodes provide
highly available services and have simultaneous, or concurrent,
access to a volume group that resides on a shared external disk.
Concurrent access is useful in situations where several instances of
a database engine need to access the same data files. It requires
that a locking scheme be in place to prevent shared resources from
becoming corrupted.
Running DB2/6000 on a HACMP/6000 system addresses the need for
a low-cost alternative to fault-tolerant solutions. The scenarios
DATA BASE : ALTR - PAGE: 4
supported by DB2/6000 include:
o Idle or Rotating Standby: Hot Standby, Rotating Standby,
One-Sided Takeover
o Partitioned or Mutual Operations Takeover: Partitioned Highly
Available Workload, Third-Party Takeover.
The instructions to update the shell scripts required to
implement HACMP support for DB2/6000 will be packaged with DB2/6000
as a Script file.
PERFORMANCE: Performance is always a key objective in database
management systems. Many technologies have been applied to DB2/6000
in this area, including cost-based optimization, sort and join
algorithms, buffer-management techniques, and communication
reduction. Indexing and locking techniques also provide a high level
of concurrency while maintaining high levels of performance.
Since announcement, DB2/6000 performance has been improved
with numerous pathlength reductions. These have occurred in such
areas as locking, logging, data management, sorting, and
inter-process communications, and some functions have been moved to a
lower level of the database engine, thus reducing their CPU cost. In
addition, improvements were made in DB2/6000's logging mechanism to
reduce the number of log writes performed and the amount of log space
consumed, while still providing full recoverability. Finally, new
configuration parameters have been added to allow users to fully
optimize their performance.
All of the above improvements have contributed to DB2/6000
achieving very competitive levels of performance in online
transaction processing (OLTP) and query environments. DB2/6000
results for the TPC-A (1) and TPC-B (1) industry-standard benchmarks
will be published at the time of general availability.

(TPC).
SUPPORT FOR REMOTE BACKUP TO AN ADSTAR DISTRIBUTED STORAGE MANAGER:
DB2/6000 databases can be backed up using ADSTAR Distributed Storage
Manager (ADSM). ADSM provides support for remote backup to MVS, VM,
AIX/6000, and OS/2 2.1 based systems. DB2/6000 includes the ADSM
application programming interface (API) Version 1.1.0, which is used
during the backup and restoration of DB2/6000 databases. Service and
support for the ADSM API Version 1.1.0 are available from IBM Storage
Systems Division at 800-423-7827.
Refer to IBM Software Announcement 293-382, dated July 29,
1993, for further information.
Customers interested in an IBM front-end query and
presentation tool for use with DB2/6000 should consider Query/6000,
which was announced on March 16, 1993. DB2/6000 customers who wish
to apply to join the second phase of the Query/6000 First Customer
Shipment Program prior to its general availability should contact
their IBM representative.
DDCS/6000 VERSION 1 has been enhanced since announcement by
the following functions:
REMOVAL OF DB2/6000 AS A PREREQUISITE: DB2 Client Support/6000 no
longer requires the DB2/6000 product to be installed.
In a scenario where applications executing on the same node as
DATA BASE : ALTR - PAGE: 5
DDCS/6000 need access to a host database, only DDCS/6000 needs to be
installed. In a scenario where DOS, Windows, OS/2, and/or AIX
database clients want to access host databases through DDCS/6000, DB2
Client Support/6000 is also required. In addition to DB2 Client
Support/6000, DB2/6000 was listed as a prerequisite for this scenario
in the original announcement of DDCS/6000. This DB2/6000
prerequisite has now been removed.
This change results in a lower cost of ownership for DDCS/6000
customers who do not require relational database management functions
provided by DB2/6000.
SUPPORT FOR ADDITIONAL VERSIONS/RELEASES OF DB2 FOR MVS, SQL/DS, AND
OS/400: In addition to supporting DB2 V3R1 for MVS, SQL/DS (TM) V3R4
for VM and VSE, and OS/400 (R) V2R3 as previously announced,
DDCS/6000 has been enhanced to support earlier versions of these
Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs). These earlier
versions include DB2 V2R3 for MVS, SQL/DS V3R3 for VM, and OS/400
V2R2. To support DDCS/6000, these products must be upgraded to the
following levels of service:
o DB2 V2R3 for MVS -- APAR PN43153
o SQL/DS V3R3 for VM -- APAR PN43497
o OS/400 V2R2 -- APAR SA29774 (PTF SF13747) and APAR SA29775 (PTF
SF13748).

DB2 Software Developer's Kits do not provide facilities for
developing applications using the COBOL programming language. A
number of third-party software companies, such as Micro Focus (3)
Inc., offer a series of products for developing COBOL applications
that manipulate data stored in IBM RDBMSs.
(3) Trademark of Micro Focus Inc.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT
DB2/6000 supports tables of up to 64 gigabytes and databases of up to
512 gigabytes. In addition, data objects can reside on multiple
storage devices. This allows customers to grow their database and
enhance their applications over time, without worrying about database
DATA BASE : ALTR - PAGE: 7
capacity limitations.
DB2 Software Developer's Kits provide an application
development environment for the development of client/server
application programs. When used in conjunction with DB2 Client
Support/6000 and DDCS/6000, application programs can gain access to
data on IBM RDBMSs.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
DB2/6000 provides support for HACMP/6000 "Idle or Rotating Standby"
and "Partitioned or Mutual Operations Takeover" fallover
configurations. The HACMP/6000 system provides reliable, recoverable
shared disk resources for mission-critical commercial and online
transaction processing (OLTP) applications, at minimal cost.
HACMP/6000 does not require specialized hardware or system software.
It is built on standard AIX services such as the Journalized File
System and the Logical Volume Manager, and industry-standard
protocols such as TCP/IP. DB2/6000 customers can take advantage of
this low-cost alternative to fault-tolerant solutions to protect
their data and provide more continuous access to business
applications.
Application programming development is an expensive and
time-consuming process. Customers have significant investments in
application programmer skills as well as development tools. DB2
Software Developer's Kits protect these investments in programming
skills and tools by supporting embedded SQL that is highly compatible
with the SQL supported by DB2 for MVS. These kits also protect a
customer's investment in application software by supporting a CLI
that allows for easy porting of applications between different
operating system platforms. In addition, IBM provides an application
programming interface that allows compiler vendors to deliver
precompilers for programming languages and compilers in addition to
those supplied by IBM.
When using embedded SQL, programmers can use SQL that is
highly compatible with the SQL supported by DB2 for MVS. DDCS/6000
allows use of SQL that is specific to the target system (for example,
DB2 for MVS). This allows for migration of host applications to DOS,
Windows, OS/2, and AIX platforms with minimal concerns for SQL
language compatibility. The combination of DB2 Software Developer's
Kits with DB2/6000 and DDCS/6000 makes for an excellent vehicle for
prototyping, developing, and testing applications that will use DB2
for MVS, SQL/DS, OS/400, and DB2/2 (TM) as database servers.
The issue of compatibility between relational database
management systems from different vendors has been receiving a lot of
attention from both trade press and customers. Several standards
bodies and industry groups are in the process of developing standards
that would simplify the task of developing applications that can work
among the RDBMSs produced by different vendors. The X/Open Company
has produced a preliminary draft specification for a call level
interface (CLI) that allows application programmers an alternative to
using dynamic embedded SQL. Rather than using embedded SQL
statements that need to be preprocessed by an SQL precompiler, users
can code application programs and make CLI function calls directly to
perform operations on data stored in an RDBMS. The X/Open
DATA BASE : ALTR - PAGE: 8
specification, when completed, will define the syntax and calling
conventions for using these functions. IBM is actively involved with
the X/Open Company in the definition of these standards.
The CLI supported in this release is compatible with an early
working draft of this X/Open specification, and is provided on all
client platforms. In the Microsoft Windows operating environment,
this implementation will interoperate with the Microsoft Open
Database Connectivity Software Development Kit Version 1.0,
supporting a superset of the core-level API. Developers that are
porting ODBC applications from the Microsoft Windows operating
environment to the DOS, OS/2, and AIX operating systems will find
this consistency especially useful, as it will greatly reduce the
need for application changes.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
DB2 Software Developer's Kits permit the development of applications
that address the following business solutions:
o Database applications can be developed on the workstation that
accesses databases in the client/server local area network (LAN)
environment only; or
o Database applications can be developed on the workstation for
ultimate use in a production database environment on the host; or
o Database applications can be developed for execution at more than
one IBM relational database platform; or
o Database applications can be developed on the workstation that
accesses databases on the LAN and at the host.
DB2 Software Developer's Kits come complete with precompilers,
a command line processor, documentation, code samples, and libraries
required for developing and prototyping application programs using a
call level interface API. The command line processor utility allows
programmers to quickly prototype SQL statements without writing any
supporting code. A comprehensive set of programming documentation
and code samples are provided to help application programmers get
started.
USER PRODUCTIVITY
DB2/6000 support for HACMP/6000 "Idle or Rotating Standby" and
"Partitioned or Mutual Operations Takeover" improves end user
productivity by ensuring the applications are more readily available
in the case of a system or network failure. If a failure is
detected, a user-specified configuration shell script can be run to
drive logon and application restart. To the end user, the node
failure looks like a machine reboot. No other action is required.
In some environments, users can continue without having to take any
action. They will simply experience a delay during fallover.
DB2 Software Developer's Kits enhance user productivity in the
following manner:
o DB2 Software Developer's Kit/2 provides a graphical user
interface program for quicker installation.
o DB2 Software Developer's Kit/6000 installation complies with
established AIX installation guidelines and procedures.
Installation is performed using the AIX Version 3.2 INSTALLP
command directly or through the use of the system management
interface tool (SMIT) menu interface.
DATA BASE : ALTR - PAGE: 9
o The SQL language implementation is highly compatible with the SQL
supported by DB2 for MVS and SQL SAA (TM) Level 2. This allows
for easier portability of SQL applications across IBM's
relational database platforms, reducing unique application
development code for each platform.
o The SQL CLI that is provided is compatible with the Microsoft
ODBC specification, thereby enabling the porting of applications
from Windows to other platforms. In addition, programs developed
using the CLI functions do not require any precompilation as the
CLI provides an alternative interface to dynamic embedded SQL.
o Extensive help is available through the online Help facility and
through the complete user library provided with the product. In
addition, code samples are provided to reduce learning time and
help application programmers become more proficient and
productive.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
DB2/2, DB2/6000, and DDCS products are developed in close cooperation
with other IBM hardware and operating system development
laboratories. The IBM Relational Database family of products is
uniquely positioned to take advantage of new functions and emerging
trends in other IBM hardware platforms and software products, and to
ensure the best performance and reliability with these products. The
performance information in this announcement and the DB2/6000 support
for the recently announced version of HACMP/6000 are examples of this
cooperation.
With the announcement of DB2 Software Developer's Kits, IBM
now provides application programmers with tools and utilities for
developing DOS, Windows, OS/2, and AIX applications that manipulate
data stored in IBM RDBMSs. These kits provide application
programmers with programming libraries, header files, code samples,
and documentation for developing application programs using either
embedded SQL or the call level interface API. In addition, DB2
Software Developer's Kits allow programmers to quickly prototype SQL
statements using a command line processor.

PLANNING INFORMATION
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The customer must provide the minimum
hardware and software environment in which DB2 Software Developer's
Kit/DOS, DB2 Software Developer's Kit/2, and DB2 Software Developer's
Kit/6000 will operate. Before attempting to install the above
program products, the customer should become familiar with the
requirements for fixed disk storage and memory of these program
products, and other applications to be installed on a workstation.
Before ordering DDCS/6000 to access host SQL data, the
customer has to establish that the host relational database manager
supports the code pages supported by DDCS/6000.
The Network License System (NetLS) uses a password arrangement
to monitor the licensing agreements for DB2/6000, DDCS/6000, DB2
Client Support/6000, and DB2 Software Developer's Kit/6000. NetLS is
used to ensure that these products run only on the processors
specified by the customer and that these processors belong to the
specified processor groups.
In addition, the usage levels for DB2/6000 and DDCS/6000 are
also monitored. The usage level is defined by the number of
concurrent connections that are established with databases that are
monitored by these products. A connection with a database is
established when an application issues an SQL CONNECT statement and
is relinquished when this application is terminated or an SQL CONNECT
RESET statement is issued. Customers are not required to obtain a
license for NetLS or to install the NetLS product in order to use the
above products.
Once the licensed program is installed, customers must obtain
a NetLS password in order to use it. Detailed instructions on the
information required and how to obtain the NetLS password will be
shipped with the product.
DATA BASE : ALTR - PAGE: 16
To obtain the NetLS password, call the IBM Registration
Center.

ONE-TIME CHARGE: Customers who pay a one-time charge for a licensed
program receive enhancements and future releases, if any, at no
additional charge. Significant new function may be offered as an
optional feature and charged for separately. Customers who order
software release updates will be billed a processing charge. If a
replacement program is announced and the customer elects to license
the replacement program for a one-time charge and replace the prior
program, an upgrade charge may apply.
VARIABLE CHARGES: Variable charges apply to:
o DB2/6000
o DB2 Client Support/6000
o DB2 Client Support/6000 -- SNA Support Feature
o DDCS/6000
o DB2 Software Developer's Kit/6000.
The applicable processor-based one-time charge will be based
on the group of the designated machine on which the licensed program
is licensed for use. If the program is designated to a processor in
a group for which no charge is listed above, the charge of the next
higher group listed applies.
For upgrades of one-time charge licenses to a machine in a
higher group, the upgrade charge will be the difference in the
then-current charges between the two groups. For downgrades of
one-time charge licenses to a machine in a lower group, there will
be no adjustment or refund of one-time charges paid.
USAGE CHARGE: Charges for DB2/6000 and DDCS/6000 are based on usage
levels. When a customer upgrades to a higher level of usage, a usage
upgrade charge will apply, equal to the difference between the
charges for the current level of usage and the higher level of usage.
