FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OS/2 SHAREWARE BBS RECEIVES 1,000,000th CALL
The OS/2 Shareware BBS, home of the world's largest collection of
OS/2 shareware, freeware and public domain programs and information,
received its one millionth call today.
(Fairfax, Virginia -- June 11, 1996) Today the OS/2 Shareware BBS
received its one millionth call since beginning operations in early
1990. Starting as a single line bulletin board system, the OS/2
Shareware BBS is now a multiline system with full Internet connectivity.
The BBS now has 21 dial-in telephone lines plus a T1 connection to the
Internet. Over the years, the bulletin board has become known as The
Place to look for new OS/2 programs and information.
"It's an exciting time to be involved with OS/2," said Pete Norloff,
the BBS originator, "we used to see 40 or 50 calls a day and now that
number is up over 1000." Between the BBS and the accompanying web site,
close to 30 gigabytes of OS/2 programs and information are being
distributed each month.
Ken Whitesell, the 1,000,000th caller wins a lifetime subscription to
the BBS; Speech Advantage Office from Speech Advantage; a copy of Warp
Connect and Merlin (when available) from IBM; and a copy of Mesa
Spreadsheet from Sundial Systems Corporation. "This is a one-stop
resource for drivers, shareware, freeware, documentation, and other
goodies." said Whitesell, "The OS/2 Shareware BBS has attracted an
active group who share their time and expertise with other users through
both messages and files. Of course I'm thrilled to be caller number
1,000,000"
With the current importance of the Internet and the Web, the BBS is
adding important web features. "The entire file collection is now
available via the Web" said Norloff, "subscribers can search the file
collection and download the files immediately without ever leaving their
browser."
The BBS provides telnet access as well. Most modern communication
programs allow connections via Telnet, making the BBS a local call from
just about anywhere in the world. Anyone using the Internet can access
the entire collection of over 13,000 OS/2 shareware, freeware and public
domain programs and information files without placing a long distance
call.
Callers are attracted to the BBS primarily for the files but also for
the message conferences. New files are posted every day, 365 days a
year and are organized into approximately 50 categories. Considerable
effort is spent to maintain the most comprehensive catalog of OS/2
programs anywhere.
