NEW VERSION OF VENURA PUBLISHER TO APPEAR UNDER GEM, WINDOWS & OS/2
SAN DIEGO, CA -- November 15, 1989 -- New GEM, Windows and OS/2
Presentation Manager versions of Xerox Ventura Publisher were announced
Wednesday by Xerox Desktop Software. The new Xerox Ventura Publisher
Series of products expand functionality and platform availability to serve
a broader desktop publishing customer base.
The Xerox Ventura Publisher Series provides users with desktop
publishing capabilities on all PC platforms and combines the features found
in Xerox Ventura Publisher and Xerox Ventura Publisher: Professional
Extension and Xerox Ventura Publisher: Network Server packages --
previously available only as separate products.
The Series also adds additional new features. Each product in the
series has a suggested retail price of $895, which represents a savings of
more than 50 percent compared to the combined price of the previously
separate products.
AVAILABILITY
------------
The GEM Edition of the Xerox Ventura Publisher Series is scheduled to
ship in the United States in March 1990. The Windows and OS/2 Editions are
planned for first customer shipments in the United States in the second
quarter of 1990.
OVERVIEW
--------
"Our customers have asked for availability across a variety of
platforms, plus cost-effective, fully featured software and enhanced
ease-of-use," said Larry Gerhard, president of Xerox Desktop Software.
"Our new family of products answers these requirements and demonstrates our
continued commitment to expand Xerox leadership in the desktop publishing
market."
By offering a variety of graphical user interfaces (GUIs), Xerox now
addresses the desktop publishing needs of a larger user base, regardless of
the particular operating environment. Corporations that have standardized
on Windows or Presentation Manager, or customers who are familiar with the
use of these GUIs, can now easily incorporate the Xerox Ventura Publisher
Series into their desktop publishing strategies.
MORE CAPABILITY
---------------
The integration of Professional Extension and Network Server into the
Xerox Ventura Publisher Series gives users significantly more desktop
publishing capabilities. Such features include interactive table creation,
equation editing, vertical justification, cross referencing and support for
expanded memory. Network publishing features are also included to help
local area network (LAN) users enhance workgroup productivity.
"By providing customers with network capabilities in each Xerox
Ventura Publisher Edition, we will facilitate growth of workgroup
publishing," said Gerhard. "Many customers would like to network their
publishing applications because the work process involves pooling the
efforts of many people, of files and other resources. The network
capabilities included in the Xerox Ventura Publisher Series help customers
make that transition to workgroup publishing.''
New features added to the Series include support for longer footnotes,
which can flow from page to page; an improved HPGL converter which allows
users to integrate line art that more precisely matches plotter output; and
new import filters. Existing Xerox Ventura Publisher 2.0 files can be used
in all of the new Xerox Ventura Publisher Series of products.
NEW VERSIONS
------------
The three new versions of Xerox Ventura Publisher and their features are:
XEROX VENTURA PUBLISHER SERIES, DOS (GEM) EDITION
=================================================
Xerox Ventura Publisher DOS Edition maintains the familiar GEM user
interface. The DOS edition is directed to customers who want to run
Xerox Ventura Publisher on PCs ranging from XTs to 486s, or who want
outstanding performance in document composition and those who are
accustomed to the GEM user interface.
The DOS product is supported by a large aftermarket of products. With
the seamless integration of Professional Extension and Network
features, the new DOS Edition will represent a significant value to
desktop publishers.
XEROX VENTURA PUBLISHER SERIES, WINDOWS EDITION
===============================================
Xerox Ventura Publisher for Windows has an entirely new user interface
that complies with Microsoft Windows standards. This version of the
product line is designed for those customers requiring the power of
Xerox Ventura Publisher and who have standardized on the Windows
interface, or who find Windows applications easier to learn and use.
Extended memory support increases the size and complexity of documents
that can be created. Support for the Windows Clipboard and virtually
all Windows input and output devices will be included.
XEROX VENTURA PUBLISHER SERIES, OS/2 PRESENTATION MANAGER EDITION
=================================================================
Xerox Ventura Publisher for OS/2 Presentation Manager combines the
power of OS/2 with the advanced features of Xerox Ventura Publisher.
The product takes full advantage of the OS/2 environment. It supports
multiple "threads" so that the system remains responsive during
operations such as generating table of contents and changing layouts.
Multiple simultaneous sessions of Xerox Ventura Publisher allow users
to continue working while a document is printing.
Virtual memory removes all practical limits on the size and complexity
of documents which can be created. This version of the Xerox Ventura
Publisher Series is targeted for desktop publishers who are
standardizing on OS/2 and who want high-end workstation features at PC
prices.
PRICING
-------
The suggested retail price for each one of the Xerox Ventura Publisher
Editions is $895. Registered users of Xerox Ventura Publisher 2.0 can
upgrade to the DOS Edition. Prices for these upgrades will be announced at
a later date. A special introductory price of $395 will be offered to
registered Xerox Ventura Publisher 2.0 customers who wish to purchase the
Windows or OS/2 Editions.
