  144.    USER PRODUCTIVITY
  145.    TCP/IP Version 1.2 has been designed to improve the productivity of
  146.    the end user.  There has been significant performance improvements in
  147.    the entire product.  New functions have been added to TCP/IP
  148.    Version 1.2 for OS/2, with the goal of end user productivity in mind.
  149.    These include the following:
  150.    o   Network File System (NFS) -- server
  151.               This allows users to share files with each other, much the
  152.        same way that LAN Server/Requester works.  It also has the
  153.        benefit of allowing a user with a UNIX machine to share files
  154.        with an OS/2 machine.
  155.    o   X Window System -- server
  156.               This is a distributed, window-based graphics system
  157.        developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  TCP/IP
  158.        Version 1.2 supports Version 11, Release 4 (X11R4) of the X
  159.        Window Server function.  Support for the X Window System server
  160.        for OS/2 is an announced IBM Statement of Direction.
  161.    o   File Transfer Protocol -- Presentation Manager (TM) (FTPPM)
  162.               FTPPM uses standard presentation manager input and output
  163.        conventions to perform the functions of the FTP client.  It also
  164.        allows simultaneous connections to remote hosts within a single
  165.        session.
  166.    o   Multi-Threaded Libraries
  167.               TCP/IP Version 1.2 for OS/2 supports the Multi-thread
  168.        programming feature of the OS/2 operating system in Socket
  169.        libraries.
  170.    o   Dynamic Link Library Support
  171.               TCP/IP Version 1.2 for OS/2 supports the dynamic linking
  172.        feature of the OS/2 operating system.
  173.     (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
  174.           Many functions have been enhanced to provide greater end user
  175.    productivity.  A list of these follows:
  176.    o   Installation Configuration Automation Tool (ICAT) has been
  177.        updated to allow configuration of the new features of this
  178.        program.  Also, an indicator displays how far along the
  179.        installation has progressed.
  180.    o   INETD is a super server that allows you to start multiple servers
  181.        from a single OS/2 session, and use the applicable server when
  182.        needed.
  183.    o   TELNET Server has improved performance.
  184.    o   TELNET LINEMODE Client Support is enhanced to take advantage of
  185.        the Extended Networking package that is new to this program; it
  186.        reduces the amount of network traffic for Extended Networking and
  187.        SLIP.
  188.    o   PMANT -- TN3270 has been updated to allow the user to modify the
  189.        PMANT keyboard definitions and to select from any of the VIO
  190.        fonts that are available on the display adapter.
  191.    o   File Transfer Protocol (FTP) will now support HPFS (High
  192.        Performance File System).  This allows users to transfer files
  193.        that have file names supported in HPFS.
  194.    o   FTP API -- new procedures give programs the capability to query
  195.        the working directory on a remote host and query the operating
  196.        system of the remote host.
  197.    o   Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) now supports MIB II
  198.        (RFC 1213).  The SNMP facility can now act as both a managing
  199.        system and a managed system.
  200.    o   LPR/LPD -- remote printer support
  201.    o   Remote Procedure Call
  202.    o   NFS Client.
  203.    BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
  204.    TCP/IP Version 1.2 for OS/2 provides support for X.25 as a transport
  205.    mechanism thereby providing wide area networking support as an
  206.    addition to the overall business solutions customers are seeking in
  207.    their multivendor enterprises.
  208.           Support for the FTP/SMTP in Kanji is provided in passthru mode
  209.    in this release.
  210.           Support for the X Window System server Kanji fonts is provided
  211.    in this release.
  212.           The default OS/2 Code Page is used to support display of
  213.    National Language Characters when using VT200 TELNET emulation.  The
  214.    default OS/2 Code Page for National Language Support is also
  215.    available when using FTP, TFTP, and SMTP.
  216.    INVESTMENT PROTECTION
  217.    Many features have been added to TCP/IP Version 1.2 to protect the
  218.    investment customers have made in the OS/2 workstations they are
  219.    using in the TCP/IP environment.  These include:
  220.    o   Facilities for keyboard remapping in PMANT and TN3270
  221.    o   Security enhancements to File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
  222.    o   Security and Interoperability enhancements to NFS Client
  223.    o   Remote Printer support in LPR/LPD
  224.    o   Support of a TELNET LINEMODE client
  225.    o   Support of Boot Protocol (BOOTP).
  226.           Also, the addition of such functions as Dynamic Link Library
  227.    support as well as Multi-Threaded Library support add to the overall
  228.    investment protection provided by TCP/IP Version 1.2 for OS/2 by
  229.    requiring less disk space and memory.
  230.    GROWTH ENABLEMENT
  231.    Growth for customers using TCP/IP in a multivendor environment has
  232.    been significantly enhanced by the following additions to TCP/IP
  233.    Version 1.2 for OS/2:
  234.    o   Support for OS/2 Standard Edition
  235.    o   Support for adapters that implement a Network Device Interface
  236.        Specification (NDIS) Media Access Control (MAC) driver.
  237.    o   Support of a Network File Server (NFS) Server
  238.    o   Support of the X Window System Server
  239.    o   Support for OS/2's High Performance File System as part of the
  240.        FTP Client, FTP server, FTPPM, and the FTP Application
  241.        Programming Interface (FTPAPI).

  341.    SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
  342.    SystemView (TM) is an enterprise-wide structure for systems
  343.    management.  The term systems management covers a broad range of
  344.    activities, from the daily operations that manage the resources of an
  345.    information system to the long range planning that addresses the
  346.    future information processing needs of an enterprise.
  347.           The IBM strategy for systems management consists of the
  348.    SystemView structure and SystemView conforming products.
  349.           TCP/IP Version 1.2 for OS/2 provides support for systems
  350.    management in the OS/2 environment.  The network management protocol
  351.    support provided by TCP/IP for OS/2 is Simple Network Management
  352.    Protocol (SNMP).
  353.           While TCP/IP Version 1.2 is not SystemView conformant, it
  354.    provides key features that apply to the SystemView application
  355.    dimension discipline.  These features are as follows:
  356.    o   Configuration Management
  357.               OS/2 TCP/IP provides a Presentation Manager based
  358.        configuration tool (ICAT) to define operational parameters as
  359.        well as its interface to the TCP/IP network.
  360.    o   Performance Management
  361.               Key performance related statistical variables can be
  362.        obtained using SNMP.
  363.    o   Problem Management
  364.               The following problem management facilities are provided:
  365.        -   The OS/2 TCP/IP SNMP Client can request the status of network
  366.            devices from SNMP agents on the network.
  367.        -   The OS/2 TCP/IP SNMP Agent TRAP support will notify one (or
  368.            more) SNMP Clients of significant network events.  These
  369.            TRAPs include cold start and authentication failure.
  370.        -   The TELNET Server capability allows remote stations to logon
  371.            to an OS/2 system, providing remote console capabilities for
  372.            full screen applications.  As a problem determination aid,
  373.            this allows a remote support group to see what the remote
  374.            end-user problem is.
  375.        -   The Remote Execution capability allows commands to be invoked
  376.            on a remote system.  For example, a network manager could
  377.            start a trace facility without involving the end user.
  378.        -   The File Transfer Protocol allows remote support groups to
  379.            retrieve a user's system files, and after inspection and
  380.            correction, replace the original.
  381.           TCP/IP provides the following system management enhancements
  382.    in the Version 1.2 for OS/2 product:
  383.    o   Support of the new Management Information Base MIB II
  384.    o   Ability to display SNMP TRAPs
  385.    o   Ability to obtain the values of individual MIB variables
  386.    o   Ability to verify the ability to reach a group of hosts.
