I'm one of the programmers who worked on OS/2 PL/I. I'm posting
the following note for my second-line manager.
Paige Vinall (IBM)
PL/I Development
-------------------
From Al Kennedy, PL/I Product Manager:
I am the bozo/dinosaur/idiot who set the price for PL/I Package/2 and
to whom you should address your cards and letters on the price topic.
And no, I don't do drugs. My address is:
A. E. Kennedy, Jr.
IBM Corp.
J84/D26
555 Bailey Aveune
San Jose, CA 95141.
Thank you for your notes expressing concern with the undiscounted price
of the new PL/I Package/2.
As you realize, there are several components that must be evaluated
before settling on a price: cost to develop, competitor's price, and
value of the product being primary. I can assure all of you that
significant analysis of many variables was done in arriving at the
price, and it was carefully selected.
With volume discounts and DSLO, PL/I Package/2 becomes a discounted
price of $1,980 at a volume of 20. And our product contains many
features and capabilities that exist only in PL/I Package/2. Our
licensing allows a copy to be installed at home and at work for a
single price, as long as only one is in use at a given time.
I personally believe that the features and capabilities of PL/I
Package/2 more than justify where we set the price. We will be
offering an evaluation copy of PL/I Package/2 at no charge at least
through the end of 1992. Please order your own evaluation copy of PL/I
Package/2 (if you send me your name and address, I will see that a copy
is mailed to you) and let PL/I development know what you think of this
exciting new product. And please let me know you what think of the price
after you have exercised the product.
Our strategy is to first penetrate the enterprise customer by offering
a productivity solution for both host targeted application development
and for work station targeted applications. The solution for host
targeted applications is staged. The first stage is to significantly
enhance the PL/I language and to deliver a full function compiler for
the OS/2 32 bit environment. I believe we have done that with the
product that becomes available September 25. The next stage will
deliver a complete unit test environment. Work station targeted
applications will be addressed with the December product in conjunction
with Workframe/2. We believe that addressing the enterprise segment
first is the quickest way to get rapid market acceptance for PL/I Package/2.
We have not ruled out entering the market for the individual user, and
we are considering a greatly reduced price for a version of PL/I
Package/2 that has much less function. We will test market demand
carefully in order to determine whether we should proceed with this.
We will be opening a "No Promises" forum soliciting your views on the
minimum core function that would be needed to be in such a product.
I encourage you to send us your views after the forum is opened.
I can assure that PL/I is not a "dead end" language and we have very
exciting plans for PL/I in the next two years.
Thanks very much for your continued interest in PL/I.
