DESCRIPTION
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
In addition to all previously announced function, IBM Operating
System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.3 provides increased performance
over OS/2 SE 1.2. IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition
Version 1.3 is faster in performing system functions than OS/2 SE 1.2
in memory-constrained environments. (A memory constrained
environment is caused when applications overcommit system memory and
disk swapping occurs).
The minimum system storage required to operate OS/2, including
the DOS compatibility mode, has been reduced from 2.5MB to 2.0MB.
This reduction will allow many Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R))
systems to utilize the true multitasking of IBM Operating System/2
Standard Edition Version 1.3 without additional storage.
NOTE: 2.5MB or greater system memory and a 60MB or greater fixed
disk partition are recommended for use with the high performance file
system.
A new selectable install utility allows IBM Operating System/2
Standard Edition Version 1.3 to install in less fixed disk storage
than OS/2 SE 1.2, freeing more space for user programs and data. The
smallest install will require approximately 8.0MB of fixed disk space
and the full install 11.0MB on a system with at least 4MB of system
memory.
(R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines
Corporation.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT
IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.3 includes Adobe
Type Manager and will be shipped with IBM's core set of fonts. Adobe
Type Manager accepts Adobe Type 1 outline fonts to provide high
quality typographic text in a full range of sizes and styles to all
IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.2 supported
printers and displays, providing "What You See Is What You Get"
(WYSIWYG) technology for OS/2 Presentation Manager (TM) (PM)
applications. Over 600 different typefaces available in Adobe Type 1
font format can now be used with OS/2.
(TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
The twelve core fonts included with IBM Operating System/2
Standard Edition Version 1.3 are:
o Times New Roman (2)
o Times New Roman Bold
o Times New Roman Italic
o Times New Roman Bold Italic
o Helvetica (3)
o Helvetica Bold
o Helvetica Italic
o Helvetica Bold Italic
o Courier
o Courier Bold
o Courier Italic
o Courier Bold Italic
Adobe Type Manager requires no new application programming
interfaces and works with existing OS/2 applications that use
Presentation Manager outline fonts. IBM Operating System/2 Standard
Edition Version 1.3 will support additional vendor font-rendering
technologies developed for use with IBM Operating System/2 Standard
Edition Version 1.3.
IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.3 includes
Procedures Language 2/REXX (REXX). REXX is an easy-to-learn language
designed to facilitate the writing of clear, structured, interpreted
procedures. REXX can provide the data manipulation and procedural
logic framework for OS/2 commands and conventional calls to other
high-level languages and CMD programs.
The REXX interpreter implements both the SAA (TM) level 1 and
the SAA level 2 definition of Procedures Language. Because of this,
it provides a more portable procedural alternative to OS/2 CMD
programming, reducing the programming investment for users who
require applications that execute in several SAA environments. REXX
helps protect programming investment for users who already developed
REXX procedures for other SAA environments. REXX was previously
available in OS/2 Extended Edition Version 1.2.
REXX also includes a repertoire of arithmetic, string
handling, and logic operations that can be interpreted by OS/2.
Users may use REXX as a personal computing language without requiring
a compiler. The extended repertoire in this interpreter can enhance
programmer productivity. In addition, REXX may be used to extend an
application by creating macros that have a mix of REXX instructions,
application specific instructions, and OS/2 commands.
The limit on the number of active Presentation Manager windows
has been increased 10 - 20 times over IBM Operating System/2 Standard
Edition Version 1.2 in the same environment.
IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.3 remains
fully compatible with existing and new OS/2 capable systems and
applications.
IBM OS/2 SE 1.3 provides a new, faster and more efficient
print spooler. Also available is a new API that enables applications
to configure the spooler for their specific needs without requiring
user interaction with the Print Manager.
(2) Registered trademark of the Monotype Corporation, plc.
(3) Trademark of the Linotype AG and/or its subsidiaries.
(TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
Users can now elect to install and configure their printer
setup at system install time. The install procedure with user
prompting creates the appropriate Print Manager configuration.
Enhanced printer device drivers for both IBM and non-IBM
printers are provided that will support a wide range of user and
application environments:
A new Proprinter (R) driver with support for multiple graphics
resolutions, multiple paper sources and downloading of code pages
(with additional memory). By supporting resident printer fonts
this driver has significant performance improvements for text.
An improved HP LaserJet (4) for the LaserJet series of printers
supports a variety of fonts including resident fonts, cartridge
fonts and downloadable soft fonts. Significant performance
improvements can be obtained by using device fonts.
A device driver that supports current Epson 9 and 24 pin dot
matrix printers. The printer type is selected by model or from
generic options.
A PostScript (5) device driver supporting numerous specific
PostScript printers and generic support for other PostScript
printers. It also provides the ability to download Adobe-format
fonts to provide significant synergy with the new Adobe font
support.
A Queue Driver specifically for use in plotting provides improved
appearance of pictures spooled to a vector plotter by reverse
clipping the data. Hidden lines and patterns are removed from
solid objects that overlap, resulting in a more accurate hard
copy of the screen image.
IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.3 provides
new text window fonts, which allow the user to tailor command line
window text to preference. This feature enables the display of more
usable information in the same area or makes the original information
easier to read.
New program properties functions allow the user to define a
working set of applications that start up at boot time, eliminating
the need for STARTUP.CMD and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.3 has
National Language Support for thirteen languages: Canadian French,
Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian,
Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, United Kingdom English, United
States/Universal English.
OS/2 Programming Tools and Information Version 1.2/1.3
supports the application developer. This product will support the
new features and function provided by IBM Operating System/2 Standard
Edition Version 1.3. New APIs are provided to support the print
spooler, drag/drop and spin button functions. An upgrade is
available for customers with OS/2 Programming Tools and Information
Version 1.2.

program can use the IBM 8514/A Adapter in advanced function (high
resolution) mode by issuing 8514/A adapter interface calls.
The adapter interface software is contained on a diskette
shipped with the 8514/A adapter. Customers using the 8514/A in
advanced function mode must ensure that the adapter interface
code is at the correct level for use with Operating System/2.
The adapter interface level can be determined by running
HDIVER.EXE in the HDIOS2 directory. If this directory does not
exist, the customer can order form number G68X-2300 at no charge.
This part includes a new level of the adapter interface and
additional pages for the 8514/A Technical Reference.
NOTE: The PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A 8514/A Adapter Interface
calls cannot be used in OS/2 full screen or DOS compatibility

SUPPORTED HARDWARE FOR FAMILY APPLICATIONS: Assuming there is
sufficient memory, display, and other appropriate hardware, a family
application can run on all the system units supported by the
Operating System/2 and IBM Disk Operating System Version 3.30 or
4.00. Family applications are created by using the Family
Application Programming Interface of OS/2 and utilities supplied in
the Programming Tools and Information Version 1.2/1.3 Upgrade.
PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: An application developer should acquire a
license for the IBM OS/2 Programming Tools and Information
Version 1.2/1.3. The OS/2 Programming Tools and Information
Version 1.2/1.3 is required to create an IBM Operating System/2
application using either the Presentation Manager or Dialog Manager.
The OS/2 Programming Tools and Information Version 1.2/1.3 requires
IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.2 or IBM Operating
System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.3 and accompanying manuals.
COMPATIBILITY: With the following exceptions, programs designed to
run under IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.2 will
run under IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.3 and do
not need to be reinstalled.
NOTE: Customers who have compiled programs using IBM FORTRAN/2 (TM)
Version 1.00 or 1.01, that are to be run on IBM Operating System/2
Standard Edition Version 1.3, must get maintenance level 1.02 of IBM
FORTRAN/2 and recompile their programs to ensure proper function and
correct results.
If the application uses certain subsystem function such as
physical video buffer access, registering of subsystem functions, or
character device monitors, it will be required to run in a
full-screen OS/2 session. Otherwise, the application can be windowed
by specifying it as "run in a text window" when installing the
application under the OS/2 Presentation Manager.
Licensees of Basic Compiler/2 (TM), Macro Assembler/2 (TM),
PASCAL Compiler/2 (TM) or C/2 (TM) Version 1.0 may submit the
CodeView Update order form contained in the IBM Operating System/2
Standard Edition Version 1.3 package to receive an update to CodeView
containing advanced function for debugging OS/2 applications. The
order form must be accompanied by proof of license of the eligible
language product being used. IBM will honor requests for the update
until December 31, 1991.
NOTE: This CodeView update is the same update made available for
IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition 1.1 and IBM Operating
System/2 Standard Edition 1.2.
Depending on the programming language used to develop
applications, some capabilities of IBM Operating System/2 Standard
Edition Version 1.3 may not be possible to implement in an
application.
IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.3 does not
support the SYS utility or the /s option of the FORMAT command.
The BACKUP and RESTORE commands are supported in protect-mode
only.
Programs compiled using the Version 1.2 Presentation Manager
will run on Version 1.3 without change.
The DOS environment of IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition
Version 1.3 protects a user's investment in current software by
providing the capability to run existing DOS programs, subject to
certain limitations described in the IBM Operating System/2
documentation.
Generally, the DOS environment is compatible to a subset of
IBM DOS 4.00 function. Support for disk files greater than 32MB was
included in IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.1, and
is available in DOS compatibility mode. The IBM DOS 4.00 support for
greater than 25 lines of text mode display and support for additional
video modes for PS/2 displays are also available in DOS compatibility
mode. The remaining new IBM DOS 4.00 functions, such as the DOS
Shell or LIM/EMS, are not supported. The DOS command line interface
that resembles the one in DOS 3.30 is also provided. The IBM
Operating System/2 Family API allows programs to be written that will
run on IBM DOS 3.30, IBM DOS 4.00, IBM Operating System/2 Standard
Edition Version 1.1, IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition
Version 1.2, or IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition Version 1.3.
(TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
Many existing DOS applications may be run in the DOS mode of
OS/2. Users should be aware that some DOS applications, such as
communications and timing dependent programs, may not function
properly in the DOS mode of OS/2.

of a supported release of the licensed program by issuing:
corrective service information such as correction documentation,
corrected code, notice of availability of corrected code, a
restriction or a bypass as determined by IBM. This defect support is
only applicable if the defect is found to occur in the operating
environment in which the product was intended to be used.
The IBM Support Center will provide the registered Service
Coordinator with telephone assistance in problem diagnosis and
resolution. The registered Service Coordinator may call the IBM
Support Center at any time and will receive a return call within
eight business hours. (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,
