  44. DESCRIPTION
  45.  
  46. DOS LAN Requester
  47.  
  48. The DOS LAN Requester (DLR) is the component of the IBM OS/2 LAN Server
  49. V1.2 that allows IBM DOS V3.3 and IBM DOS V4.0 workstation users to access
  50. resources controlled by IBM OS/2 LAN Server V1.2.  The DLR replaces the IBM
  51. PC LAN Program (PCLP) V1.3 Extended Services requesters on a network domain
  52. when connected to OS/2 LAN Server V1.2.  The conversion from PCLP V1.3 to
  53. DLR is via a PCLP-like menu option.  This option removes the PCLP V1.3
  54. requester modules from the workstation and replaces them with DLR modules
  55. by downloading the DLR modules from OS/2 LAN Server V1.2.  DLR provides
  56. enhancements over IBM's PCLP V1.3 in the areas of security, useability, RAM
  57. requirements and LAN Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).  The IBM
  58. LAN Support Program V1.1 is included in the IBM OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 for
  59. use with each copy of the DLR.  (NOTE: Other IBM DOS products requiring the
  60. IBM LAN Support Program V1.1 may use the IBM LAN Support Program V1.1
  61. included in the OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 when the DOS workstation also has the
  62. DOS LAN Requester installed.)
  63.  
  64. DLR requires a user to successfully logon to the OS/2 LAN Server V1.2
  65. before access to any LAN resources are allowed.  Validation of resource
  66. access is always determined by the logon User ID.  DLR is granted access to
  67. resources of the OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 using the same access control system
  68. as the IBM OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2 Requester.
  69.  
  70. DLR useability allows the user the flexibility to perform network tasks
  71. including logon from both the Full Screen Interface and the Command Line
  72. Interface.  Once logon is complete, a user may select one of eight color
  73. combinations for the DLR display panels.  In addition, local applications
  74. can now be added to the DLR Application Selector.  These local
  75. applications, which reside on the local machine's fixed disk drive may also
  76. be defined in separate groups and referenced by a unique group name.  There
  77. is a maximum of eight user defined unique group names available.  From the
  78. two pre-defined application groups (that is,  LAN Services and Served
  79. Applications) and the user defined groups, the user selects which group to
  80. make current.  A list of the current group's applications is then
  81. displayed.
  82.  
  83. Random Access Memory (RAM) available to DOS applications can be increased
  84. by approximately 10KB to 20KB when using IBM DOS V3.3 and 25KB to 35KB when
  85. using IBM DOS V4.0 versus comparable configurations provided by the IBM PC
  86. LAN Program V1.3.  This memory savings can be achieved by using the first
  87. 64K segment of RAM above the 1MB address in IBM's 80286 or 80386 based
  88. machines equipped with extended memory.  Or, this memory savings can also
  89. be achieved when using IBM machines that use the IBM Expanded Memory
  90. Adapter with support for the Lotus, Intel, and Microsoft (LIM) Expanded
  91. Memory Specification (EMS) 4.0 provided by DOS V4.0.
  92.  
  93. Applications can be developed for the DLR that will utilize a rich subset
  94. of the same API calls supported by the IBM OS/2 LAN API.  Most of the API
  95. categories defined and supported in the IBM OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2 LAN
  96. Requester and IBM OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 will also be supported by the DLR.
  97. The API categories that are available to applications running with the DLR
  98. are Access Permission, Auditing, Configuration, Connection, Domain, File,
  99.  
  100. Group, Handle, Mailslot, Message, Named Pipe, Remote Utility, Requester,
  101. Serial Device, Server, Service, Session, Share, Statistics, Use and User.

  105. IBM OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2 Requester
  106.  
  107. The OS/2 LAN Requester component of the IBM OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2 has
  108. been enhanced to use the same User Profile Management (UPM) used by other
  109. components of the IBM OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2.  As an example, the same
  110. User ID and password can access resources controlled by either the Database
  111. Manager component or the OS/2 LAN Server V1.2.
  112.  
  113. The OS/2 LAN Requester is a participant in the Basic Configuration Services
  114. and Batch Configuration common install processes with the other
  115. Communications Manager and Database Manager components of the IBM OS/2
  116. Extended Edition V1.2.  These new install processes allow more flexibility
  117. in the choice of functions to be installed, the ability to remove unwanted
  118. functions and the ability to tailor the install process for other users.
  119. The LAN Requester may be installed on any logical fixed disk drive (that
  120. is, "C", "D" or "E").
  121.  
  122. When logged on to the OS/2 LAN Server V1.2, the OS/2 LAN Requester will
  123. operate over ethernet DIX Version 2.0 and IEEE 802.3 LANs (Etherand LANS).
  124. This support is provided through the Communications Manager component of
  125. OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2 which uses the Network Driver Interface
  126. Specification (NDIS) for these two additional LAN protocols.
  127.  
  128. When logged on to the OS/2 LAN Server V1.2, the OS/2 LAN Requester can take
  129. advantage of additional support provided by the IBM OS/2 LAN Application
  130. Programming Interfaces (APIs).  Several new categories of APIs will be
  131. supported as well as additional calls to LAN API categories already
  132. announced as supported under IBM's OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2 LAN
  133. Requester.  These APIs give the application programmer a set of calls for
  134. LAN interprocess communications, network management, network messaging,
  135. shared resource management, security and network services.  API categories
  136. that are supported are:
  137.  
  138. Access Permission    Examine or modify user and group access permission
  139.                      records for server resources
  140. Alert                Notification of network events
  141. Auditing             Control the audit log file which contains an audit
  142.                      trail of Server operations
  143. Configuration        Retrieve network configuration information
  144. Connection           List of all connections made to a server by a
  145.                      requester client or all connections made to a server's
  146.                      shared resources
  147. Domain               Obtain domain-specific information
  148. Error Logging        Control the error log file
  149. File                 Monitoring which file, device, and pipe resources are
  150.                      opened on a server, and closing one of the resources
  151.                      if necessary
  152. Group                Control user groups in the User Accounts Subsystem
  153. Handle               Get and set information on a per-handle basis
  154. Mailslot             One-way interprocess communication
  155. Message              Send, read, log, and forward messages

  185. Utilization of IBM OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2
  186.  
  187. IBM OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 can take advantage of, and use features of the new
  188. and enhanced OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2.  These include the High
  189. Performance File System (HPFS).  HPFS is an attractive alternative to the
  190. File Allocation Table (FAT) or FAT-based file system because it supports
  191. DASD with as many as 16 partitions and can handle partitions as large as 2
  192. gigabytes.  The HPFS maintains compatibility with the FAT file system at
  193. the Application Programming Interface (API) level and is less performance
  194. sensitive as file sizes and/or directories get very large.  The system
  195. installation procedure is used to install the HPFS.  The OS/2 LAN Server
  196. V1.2, when operating with the High Performance File System, will have
  197. improved performance over the OS/2 LAN Server V1.0, particularly for random
  198. operations.
  199.  
  200. With the enhanced OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2, the OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 can
  201. now support a total of up to 8,000 open files.  This is an increase from
  202. the previous allowable maximum of 255 open files.
  203.  
  204. Access Control System for Server Resources
  205.  
  206. The access control system has been enhanced to provide a higher level of
  207. control over LAN Server resources than was available with OS/2 LAN Server
  208. V1.0.  The access control system provides a means to protect LAN Server
  209. resources based on permissions assigned to a user or groups of users.  No
  210. access is allowed to a server resource unless explicitly specified.
  211.  
  212. The permissions available with OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 provide more
  213. granularity than available with the original IBM OS/2 LAN Server V1.0.  The
  214. permissions are; NONE, EXECUTE, READ, WRITE, CREATE, DELETE, ATTRIBUTE and
  215. PERMISSION.  NONE, EXECUTE and READ remain unchanged.  READ and WRITE used
  216. in combination replace UPDATE.  EXECUTE, READ, WRITE, CREATE, DELETE,
  217. ATTRIBUTE and PERMISSION replace ALTER.  All permissions, except NONE, may
  218. be used in combination with any other.
  219.  
  220. The Command Line Interface has also been enhanced to support management of
  221. the users, groups, aliases, and access control profiles.
  222.  
  223. Access management of resources across OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 domains has been
  224. simplified with the introduction of guests.  A guest account may be created
  225. for a domain.  Whenever a user tries to access a resource, such as an
  226. external alias, on a domain where they are not defined, the permissions
  227. associated with the guest account will be used.
  228.  
  229. File Replication Service
  230.  
  231. The new File Replication Service provides the ability for an IBM OS/2 LAN
  232. Server V1.2 to replicate all or part of a directory tree over the LAN to
  233. either another machine running the OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 or to a workstation
  234.  
  235. machine running the OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2 Requester component.  The
  236. replication service also allows for the replication of information locally
  237. without use of the LAN to provide a local duplication capability.  The
  238. source of all replicated information is specified as a directory, with all
  239. associated subdirectories.  Likewise, the target of all replicated
  240. information is another directory, with subdirectory structure matching the
  241. source.  Each target can replicate only the directories that it requires.
  242. The source can set the level of replication to either the entire tree or
  243. file by file.  The OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 replication source checks for
  244. changes in the directories to be replicated at user defined intervals and
  245. notifies target machines of any changes that occur during the intervals.
  246. The target machines then perform updates.
  247.  
  248. Requester Access to LAN Server Resource
  249.  
  250. Any mix of OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2, V1.1, DLR, or PC LAN Program V1.3
  251. requesters may be active on a single OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 (see Figures 1
  252. and 2).  Refer to PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS below for factors that
  253. influence the practical limit of active workstations.
  254.  
  255. The following describes the IBM requester access of server resources over a
  256. LAN.  This description focuses on three specific areas:
  257.  
  258. o  logon to a domain (a domain is a logically defined server or group of
  259.    server machines including the resources and definitions of the resources
  260.    and users controlled by the servers)
  261. o  administration of a domain
  262. o  cross domain access of resources (that is,: that are in a domain other
  263.    than the domain logged on to by the user)
  264.  
  265. Supported combinations of logon and administration are defined in Figure 1
  266. below.  The three domains addressed are those that consist of IBM PC LAN
  267. Program V1.3 (PCLP) Servers, IBM OS/2 LAN Server V1.0 (LS1.0), and OS/2 LAN
  268. Server V1.2 (LS1.2).  The requesters addressed are the PCLP Extended
  269. Services Requester, the IBM OS/2 Extended Edition V1.1 (EE1.1) Requester,
  270. the IBM OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2 (EE1.2) Requester and the DOS LAN
  271. Requester (DLR).  An "X" in the figure indicates the stated function
  272. (logon/administration) that is supported from the Full Screen Interface.
  273. For example, a user can use a PCLP Requester to log on to a domain
  274. consisting of OS/2 LAN Server V1.0 servers and access all domain resources
  275. available to that User ID, but will not be able to perform any
  276. administration tasks in that domain.  Note that within a domain, only like
  277. server types may be defined.

  296. Cross domain access of resources can be accomplished through external
  297. resources definitions, which is a Full Screen Interface function, or
  298. through the use of appropriate APIs, or by using explicit NET SHARE and NET
  299. USE commands.  Accessing external resources via external resources
  300. definitions is defined in Figure 2.  Specifically, once a user has logged
  301. on to a domain, accessing resources in another domain is supported through
  302. the external resource definition function.  For example, for an EE 1.1 user
  303. logged on to an LS1.0 domain requiring access to resources in an LS1.2
  304. domain, the desired resource in the LS1.2 domain must be shared.
  305.  
  306. o  The desired resource in the LS1.2 domain must be shared
  307.  
  308. o  The resource must be defined as an external resource in the LS1.0 domain
  309.  
  310. In addition, the User ID and password, or guest account, must be defined in
  311. the LS1.2 domain.

  331. A Domain Control Database (DCDB) Migration Utility is provided to assist in
  332. the migration from the Domain Control Databases of the IBM PC LAN Program
  333. V1.3 and the IBM OS/2 LAN Server V1.0 to the IBM OS/2 LAN Server V1.2.
  334. This Migration Utility provides a procedure for migration and preserves the
  335. data integrity and consistency of the definitions in the domain.

  337. The Migration Utility consists of two logical parts, an Export Facility to
  338. export the data from the previous Domain Control Database (PC LAN Program
  339. V1.3 or OS/2 LAN Server V1.0) and an Import Facility to import that data
  340. into the new OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 Domain Control Database.
  341.  
  342. With the User Profile Management subsystem and access control system
  343. security features of the OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 in combination with the OS/2
  344. Extended Edition V1.2 Requester, there are changes in the DCDB attributes
  345. and formats.  This Migration Utility will perform the mapping of attributes
  346. internally, providing transparent operation to the user.
  347.  
  348. The definitions of the LAN objects, such as users, groups and the access
  349. control profiles are migrated by the utility.  The resources themselves
  350. such as files and printers need to be physically migrated by the Network
  351. Administrator.

  354.  
  355. IBM OS/2 Local Area Network Server Version 1.2 is enabled for Single Byte
  356. Character Set (SBCS) and Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) translation with
  357. the exception of DLR, which is not DBCS enabled.

  359. MARKETING INFORMATION

  361. Product Positioning
  362.  
  363. The IBM OS/2 Local Area Network Server Version 1.2, in conjunction with an
  364. IBM OS/2 Extended Edition Version 1.2 , is the IBM SAA(TM) workstation
  365. platform for the LAN Environment.  The objective of this system is to offer
  366. a network operating system that extends the OS/2 base operating system.
  367. This allows applications to take advantage of all OS/2 base operating
  368. system functions and also become networked applications without being
  369. rewritten.  The IBM OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 satisfies application resource
  370. needs by sharing disks, files, application programs, modems, printers,
  371. plotters and processing capabilities over the LAN as if these resources
  372. were a physical part of the local workstation machine.  This concept of
  373. local/remote transparency forms the basis of IBM's Requester/Server LAN
  374. software.

  379.  
  380. The IBM OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 should be marketed to customers who can
  381. benefit from sharing PS/2(R) and PC resources such as disks, files,
  382. printers, serially attached devices, and processing capabilities.  The
  383. enhanced function of the OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 should be presented as part
  384. of IBM's LAN software system solution, which supports the requester
  385. component of IBM's SAA workstation platform, OS/2 Extended Edition V1.2 as
  386. well as a DOS LAN requester for DOS workstation platforms.  Customers that
  387. have the IBM PC LAN Program or the IBM OS/2 LAN Server installed should
  388. consider upgrading to IBM's latest network operating system.

  459. Performance Considerations:  The IBM OS/2 LAN Server V1.2 performance
  460. depends on the available system resources, the configuration of the
  461. operating system and the LAN software, segment swapping characteristics,
  462. storage reference patterns, the number of concurrent users, and the
  463. applications used.

  512. Security and auditability features of the IBM OS/2 Local Area Network
  513. Server Version 1.2 are:

  536. shipped with each program and is visible to the customer before the package

  551. errors or program defects will be corrected.  Instructions for reporting
  552. problems are included in the program publications.

  554. Service Coordinator:  Program service from IBM will be provided to end
  555. users via a registered Service Coordinator.  The Service Coordinator will
  556. be designated at the time the program license is acquired.  The Service
  557. Coordinator may be a Dealer, Industry Remarketer, or a customer
  558. representative depending on the type of contract and where the program
  559. license is acquired.  The Remarketer will be the Service Coordinator for
  560. its end-users unless the applicable PLA program is delivered to an end-user
  561. pursuant to Volume Procurement Amendment (VPA) or Customer Fulfillment
  562. Option (CFO) and the end user has designated one of its own representatives
  563. to be its Service Coordinator.  The Service Coordinator is responsible for 
  564. assisting the customer with:
  565.  
  566. 1. Determining if a problem was caused by hardware or software.
  567. 2. Identifying which software being used is causing the problem.
  568. 3. Reporting suspected defects to IBM.
  569. 4. Applying preventative and corrective service.
  570. 5. Submitting data to IBM for analysis.
  571. 6. Performing other activities recommended by IBM support organizations to
  572.    define and/or resolve the problem.
  573.  
  574. Upgrades:  Beginning with the availability of IBM OS/2 LAN Server
  575. Version 1.2 on March 30, 1990, IBM is offering a no-charge upgrade for
  576. users of IBM OS/2 LAN Server Version 1.0 until June 30, 1990.  For further
  577. information, see Announcement NDD89-636 dated November 14, 1989.

  579. Upgrades to IBM OS/2 Local Area Network Server Version 1.2 from the
  580. previous versions (OS/2 LAN Server Version 1.0 after the no-charge upgrade
  581. period ending June 30, 1990, and PC LAN Program Version 1.3 after
  582. availability) may be obtained through IBM Authorized Personal Computer
  583. Dealers and Industry Remarketers-Personal Computer.  The end users must
  584. present their original proof of license(s) (original colored cover page of
  585. the User's Guide) along with a completed and signed IBM Personal
  586. Computer/System Program Remarketer Upgrade and Certification Form
  587. (available from the Remarketer) with payment to the Remarketer.  The proof
  588. of license must be the original -- no copies will be accepted.  The
  589. Remarketer will then give the end-user a new IBM OS/2 Local Area Network
  590. Server Version 1.2.  The IBM Authorized Personal Computer Dealers and
  591. Industry Remarketers are free to set their own prices to the end user for
  592. these upgrades.  Remarketers will be paid a fee for each upgrade.
  593.  
  594. Upgrades Administrative Procedures:  The Remarketer will provide a new IBM
  595. OS/2 Local Area Network Server Version 1.2 to the end user as an upgrade as
  596. described above.  The Remarketer will receive a fee from IBM for selling
  597. the upgrades.
