  3.                      IBM INTRODUCES OS/2 EXTENDED SERVICES

  5.      LAS VEGAS, October 21, 1991 . . . IBM today announced Extended
  6.      Services for OS/2* and Extended Services with Database Server for
  7.      OS/2.  These products expand user alternatives for implementing a wide
  8.      variety of business applications across IBM and other selected hard-
  9.      ware vendor platforms.  Also announced was Distributed Database
  10.      Connections Services/2 (DDCS/2), a new product for connecting work-
  11.      station databases to host databases.

  13.      The Extended Services products contain enhancements to the Database
  14.      Manager and Communications Manager components which were previously
  15.      available in OS/2 Extended Edition 1.3 and run on either OS/2 2.0 or
  16.      OS/2 Standard Edition 1.3.

  18.      Communications Manager's new functions include integrated Peer-to-Peer
  19.      Networking (APPN) support for both End- and Network-nodes, enhanced,
  20.      host-based NetView administration of remote servers and workstations,
  21.      and allows many of the Token-Ring LAN functions to run on installed
  22.      coaxial cabling.  Additional new functions include the SAA programming
  23.      interface for communications (CPIC) and support for the Network Device
  24.      Interface Specification (NDIS), a de-facto standard for attaching
  25.      network interface cards.

  27.      Important new Database Manager functions include the addition of
  28.      forward recovery, database administration tools and state-of-the-art
  29.      problem management called First Failure Support Technology/2.  In
  30.      addition to the existing OS/2 and DOS database clients, Database
  31.      Manager also supports a new NETBIOS OS/2 client and a new Windows**
  32.      database client.

  34.      Extended Services for OS/2 is intended for use on a standalone work-
  35.      station.  Database Manager users can create databases on their own
  36.      workstation, as well as use their workstation to access a remote data-
  37.      base server on a host.

  39.      IBM Extended Services with Database Server for OS/2 includes the
  40.      features and functions of the standalone product as well as providing
  41.      the Database Server function for remote clients.  It also provides the
  42.      new Distributed Feature which allows DOS, Windows or OS/2 Database
  43.      clients to run on a LAN.  The Database client code has also been
  44.      rewritten to run faster and requires less memory.

  46.      Created to complement Extended Services, IBM SAA Distributed Database
  47.      Connections Services/2 (DDCS/2) is available in a single-user or a
  48.      network configuration. It allows Database Manager users (and supported
  49.      OS/2, DOS and Windows applications) to access host relational data-
  50.      bases conforming to the Distributed Relational Database Architecture
  51.      (DRDA).

  53.      In addition to appropriately configured PS/2* models, IBM will support
  54.      Extended Services on selected hardware vendor products.

  56.      Generally available in April 1992, the one-time license fee for
  57.      Extended Services for OS/2 is $595 and Extended Services with Database
  58.      Server for OS/2 is $1,995.  The Distributed Feature that provides
  59.      Database Client Application Enablers is $75 per client workstation.
  60.      The DDCS/2 single user license is $500; $4,680 for a multi-user.
