  1. IBM ANNOUNCES WORLDWIDE OS/2 DEVELOPER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

  3. BOSTON, Sept. 17, 1992 . . . IBM today announced that
  4. it has enhanced the OS/2 Developer Assistance Program
  5. (DAP) to reach software developers around the world who are
  6. interested in developing OS/2-based products.  The details
  7. of this program -- which IBM expects will substantially
  8. increase the number of developers writing OS/2 software --
  9. were outlined at the Software Development '92 Fall
  10. conference being held at Boston's World Trade Center.

  12. "IBM's current DAP offerings have provided support to
  13. more than 1,000 ISVs who have committed to developing 32-bit
  14. OS/2 2.0* applications -- and more than 160 of these
  15. programs are commercially available -- in addition to the
  16. thousands of 16-bit commercial applications that currently
  17. run on OS/2 2.0," said John Soyring, director of IBM's
  18. software development support programs.

  20. "Building on this success, we are expanding the
  21. coverage and enhancing the products and services of the
  22. DAP," said Soyring.  "Our goal is to provide the new DAP
  23. offerings to all types of developers around the globe,
  24. including ISVs, corporate developers, systems integrators,
  25. value-added resellers, MIS professionals, consultants,
  26. industry analysts, computer science students, educators,
  27. shareware developers and others."

  29. According to Soyring, IBM now has streamlined and
  30. simplified the DAP enrollment process.  Starting today,
  31. developers can apply for DAP membership by calling
  32. (407) 982-6408 to receive a sign-up form via facsimile.  By
  33. October 18, developers can apply by typing "GO OS2DAP" on
  34. CompuServe** and completing the electronic sign-up form.
  35. There is no charge to join the DAP; however, some program
  36. services and products require a fee.

  38. In addition to current CompuServe support and
  39. country-specific electronic services -- such as IBMLink in
  40. the U.S. -- IBM intends to use CompuServe as one of the
  41. primary worldwide distribution sources for OS/2 product,
  42. technical and marketing information.

  45. "Around the world, CompuServe will provide a valuable
  46. addition to IBM's existing regional electronically supported
  47. DAP services for developers," said Soyring.

  49.              CD-ROM for Developers
  50.  
  51. IBM also announced that it will offer a beta version of
  52. OS/2 2.x code, beta versions of various IBM OS/2
  53. development tools and programming technical information on a
  54. CD-ROM that is being distributed in a pilot program.  An
  55. earlier version of this CD-ROM was tested by a dozen
  56. developers and this test is now being expanded to 4,000
  57. programmers worldwide.  The successful testing of this
  58. program is expected to lead to a more extensive use of
  59. CD-ROM technology for delivering large quantities of code
  60. and technical information to software developers.

  62. This CD-ROM will be distributed during September and
  63. October at business shows and industry conferences such
  64. as Software Development '92 and the IBM OS/2 Developer
  65. Conference and Exposition.

  67. "The CD-ROM format is a fast and economical way to
  68. distribute early code and technical information to
  69. developers," said Soyring.

  71. There will be a shipping and handling fee for the
  72. CD-ROM.  Installation support will be provided to
  73. programmers via the CompuServe "OS2DEV" forum, section 16
  74. "DEVELOPERS CD ROM."  The license for the code contained on
  75. the CD-ROM expires December 15, 1992.

  79.      o OS/2 2.x;
  80.        -- 32-bit graphics engine beta code;
  81.      o Windows** 3.1 API support for Win-OS/2*;
  82.      o IBM's Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 2.0;
  83.      o A beta version of an enhanced IBM WorkFrame/2;
  84.      o IBM C Set/2 for OS/2 (a beta version of IBM C
  85.        Compiler with Virtual Device Driver (VDD) development
  86.        support) and a beta version of a new linker;
  87.      o A profiler for C Set/2;
  88.      o MMPM/2 plus Toolkit;
  89.      o LAN Server 3.0 beta code;
  90.      o Network Transport Services/2 (NTS/2) beta code;
  91.      o NetWare Workstation Kit for OS/2 2.0;
  92.      o TCP/IP Version 1.2.1 for OS/2;
  93.      o IBM OS/2 2.0 "Red Books" (documentation);
  94.      o IBM OS/2 2.0 Technical Library (documentation);
  95.      o 26 productivity tools (IBM employee-written
  96.        software).

  98. Current CD-ROM drives supported by OS/2 2.0 include all
  99. IBM CD-ROM drives; Toshiba models 3301T, TXM3301 and 3301B;
  100. Sony model CDU541; and NEC's CDR84 when attached to IBM,
  101. Future Domain or Adaptec SCSI controllers.

  105. OS/2 2.0 is an advanced 32-bit operating system that
  106. supports DOS, Windows and OS/2 applications in a single
