This course teaches you the basic, advanced, and support-level features of the
base operating system of IBM Operating System/2 (OS/2) Standard Edition and
Extended Edition 1.2. Each module in the course includes a summary and quiz so
you can evaluate your comprehension.
WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE: People who use OS/2 or who are responsible for
assisting others in the installation and use of OS/2.
WHAT YOU ARE TAUGHT: After completing this course, you should be able to:
o Use OS/2 commands in both OS/2 and DOS modes
o Use the functions available with the OS/2 Presentation Manager

PREREQUISITES: Before taking this course, you should take the IBM Personal

MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: This course is available on either 3.5-inch diskettes
(32F8330) or 5.25-inch diskettes (32F8329). The system requirements for each

This course introduces OS/2 Extended Edition to technical personnel. Hands-on
labs teach you how to install OS/2 Extended Edition and how to use the dif-
ferent components of the OS/2 Presentation Manager Graphical User Interface.
This course also gives you an overview of the Database Manager, the Query
Manager, and the Communications Manager.

you through the transition from DB2 and SQL/DS host environments to the OS/2

OS/2 Database Manager in both a standalone and Remote Data Services environ-
ment, how to monitor the performance of a system and make changes to improve

TITLE: P1034 DESIGNING AND PROTOTYPING SAA/CUA APPLICATIONS FOR PWS

This course covers all aspects of designing a Systems Application Architecture
(SAA) Common User Access (CUA) application user interface for the programmable
workstation (PWS). This course teaches programmers, application developers,
and application designers CUA concepts and philosophy, components, design
process (including user study and analysis), application of object-oriented
design techniques, prototyping, usability testing, and production of an object
definition document.
Six extensive workshops lead you through a complete CUA design process using an
application scenario example.
This course replaces CUA Workshop for the Nonprogrammable Terminal (P1022) and
CUA Workshop for the Programmable Workstation (P1023).
WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE: Programmers, application developers, and appli-
cation designers responsible for developing applications or user interfaces
that conform with the CUA interface of IBM Systems Application Architecture.
WHAT YOU ARE TAUGHT: After completing this course, you should be able to:
o Understand the importance of the CUA interface
o Complete a user study and perform analysis
o Understand the CUA components as they apply to the CUA graphical model
o Identify obvious user interface deviations from the CUA interface in your
own and other products
o Apply object-oriented design techniques to your own application
o Build an object definition document that fully describes all objects
required by an application
o Understand the tools available to design SAA CUA user interfaces
o Build a prototype application
o Change the product development process and methods to incorporate CUA
tools, techniques, and new technologies

o Understand the product development process
o Design and develop software programs, tools, and user interfaces
o Understand the basics of IBM Systems Application Architecture

basics of program design in the OS/2 environment through a series of lectures
and paper exercises.
WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE: Application developers and designers who need to
design OS/2 applications.
WHAT YOU ARE TAUGHT: After completing this course, you should be able to:
o Understand the OS/2 concepts and components from a programming perspective
o Understand the OS/2 internals--multitasking, multithreading, memory manage-
ment, and Application Programming Interface (API)
o Understand the Common User Access (CUA) interface and its benefits
o Understand cooperative processing from a programming perspective
o Understand the OS/2 Presentation Manager user interface
o Design basic OS/2 applications to:
- Display data and messages
- Accept input from a mouse, keyboard, and timer
- Use graphics
- Transfer data between applications
o Design menus and dialog boxes
PREREQUISITES: Before taking this course, you should be able to:
o Read C language programs. These skills can be developed by taking various
programming language courses offered by IBM or by having equivalent job
experience.
o Understand the basic functions of OS/2. These skills can be developed by
taking OS/2 Installation Workshop (P1019) or OS/2 Introduction for Tech-
nical Staff (P1028) or by having equivalent job experience.
