PRODUCT POSITIONING
The Distributed Console Access Facility Version 1.0 is the
first IBM stand-alone remote console function that supports running
with DOS stations and OS/2 stations. In addition to supporting
connection via switched asynchronous lines, this product supports SNA
LU6.2, and LU6.2 to NETBIOS for interactions with stations on the
LAN.
The Distributed Console Access Facility is intended for
point-to-point connection, and for the large enterprise environment
where central site control/monitoring of workstations distributed
across the LAN/WAN topology is required.
MARKETING STRATEGY
Distributed Console Access Facility Version 1.0 addresses the
need for personal computer-based central site help-desk type function
that can be used to facilitate network management, network
administration and application assistance involving personal computer
workstations distributed across SNA networks and on SNA connected IBM
Token-Ring LANs. With switched asynchronous connection capability,
this product can also be used as a point-to-point, station-to-station
connection for home-to-office connections, remote support
applications, or as a backup for control of remote stations when the
SNA connection is unavailable. A controlling station can be used to
run most full-screen text mode application on a target workstation,
including applications such as the IBM OS/2 LAN Server Version 1.2,
the IBM LAN Manager Version 2.0, the IBM PCLP Version 1.3.2, and
user-developed applications such as insurance and banking functions,
ordering applications and manufacturing applications.
Much of the value of this product lies in its unique ability
to enable resolution of many unusual or unexpected problems that can
arise in distributed applications, especially when unattended

DESCRIPTION
SYSTEM MANAGEMENT
The IBM distributed Console Access Facility provides the capability
for one personal computer-based workstation to be controlled by
another personal computer-based workstation with this product
installed. Once a session is established, the target workstation
receives keystrokes from the controlling workstation, with the
resulting screen images displayed on the controlling and target
workstation. Via "hot key" control, the local operator can run the
target personal computer, with the screen image presentations echoed
on the controlling personal computer (monitor mode). This product
can be used to control most full-screen text mode applications
running on either an OS/2 station or a DOS station on a LAN. This
function is transparent to the application being run.
The two workstations communicate via an LU6.2 connection
either direct to another station or across an SNA backbone, or via a
switched asynchronous link. In the IBM Token-Ring environment, the
gateway function of the Distributed Console Access Facility will act
as an LU6.2 catcher, and will communicate with the target station on
the ring via NetBios protocol. The target station on the ring can
either be a DOS-based station or another OS/2-based station with this
product installed. If connection to a target station on a
distributed LAN is required, an alternative to the LU6.2 connection
is a switched asynchronous link from the controlling station to the
distributed console gateway function on the LAN. Access is provided
to any DOS or OS/2 target station on the logical LAN with this
product installed.
If an SNA Token-Ring Interface Connector (TIC) Card-attached
37XX control unit is on the ring, direct conversations between
stations on the SNA BACKBONE and SNA stations on the ring are
possible.
The ability to run a workstation remotely from anywhere in the
SNA network provides a powerful tool that enhances the system
management capability of the distributed intelligent workstation
environment.
USER PRODUCTIVITY
Productivity of the administration and support personnel is greatly
improved with this remote capability. Use of this product from a
central site facilitates network management, network administration
and application assistance across an SNA network. Examples of how
this can be used are:
o Remote control of NetView (R)/PC workstation for alert
management, problem management and file transfer using this
product
o Remote control of LAN manager and LAN server stations to assist
LAN management and LAN administration
o Remote control of most full-screen text mode application running
on the controlled workstation. These could be PS/2 (R)-based
service consoles, business applications or industrial control
applications
o Monitoring end-user displays and selections for help-desk type
environments
o Remote problem determination for trace and dump analysis for
remote debugging
o Online education and assistance with various newly installed
applications.
A file transfer function allows transfer of files between the
two OS/2 workstations for new code loads, transfer of trace and dump
data for problem determination and distribution of network
administration data. Faster problem determination and improved
access to user data not only improves system availability, but
reduces the network support personnel workload.
Implementation of the product documentation online provides
for instant access to product information for ease-of-use and
efficiency.

GROWTH ENABLEMENT
With central site control capability of workstations distributed
across the LAN/WAN environment, implementation of distributed
applications becomes easier with this product. Technical expertise
can be stationed at the central controlling site, reducing the need
for highly skilled programming support personnel at remote locations.
Reduced operational requirements allows for faster growth for
distributed applications in this environment. With support of DOS
and OS/2, this product allows for easier transition from DOS to OS/2.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
The help-desk and remote support capabilities of this product help
protect the customer's investment in moving from a host-based system
to a system based on intelligent workstations. Built-in password
security for session initialization helps protect the customer's
software assets. The Distributed Console Access Facility runs in the
background, which allows the station to be used concurrently for
other applications.

PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: Distributed Console Access Facility
Version 1.0 requires DOS Version 3.3X, or higher, or OS/2 EE
Version 1.2.
COMPATIBILITY: The Distributed Console Access Facility cannot be
active in the same personal computer as the NetView/PC Version 1.2.1
Remote Console Facility.
The Distributed Console Access Facility on an OS/2 station can
establish a session with either another OS/2 station, or a DOS
station on a LAN with this product installed.
LIMITATIONS: This product can be used to control most full-screen
text mode applications that follow normal programming conventions as
defined by the operating system. It provides "hot key" capability
that allows jumping from session to session on the target OS/2
station, however, Presentation Manager (TM) sessions and DOS box
sessions are skipped over. Applications written to run under the
OS/2 Presentation Manager are not supported by this product.
This product provides file transfer function and allows
switched asynchronous connections on the OS/2-based workstations,
however, these functions are not available on DOS-based stations.
(TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: As with any remote operation across a
communication link, performance of the function provided by this
product is dictated primarily by the bandwidth of the link.
Performance across the SNA network must be considered by the user
when designing the network to run this product. Additionally,
performance in an OS/2 environment can be affected by availability of
system resources, the configuration of the operating system, and the
number of concurrent users and applications used.
PLANNING INFORMATION
RAM AND DASD: The following memory and fixed disk is required by
distributed console above that required by the operating system;
DOS OS/2
Memory (KB) 30 50 to 300*
Fixed Disk (KB) 30 65 to 735*
* Actual storage required depends on the configuration installed
such as gateway function, target station or controlling station.
Since this product can communicate via LU6.2 across an SNA
network, it is the responsibility of the system administrator to
ensure that proper network SYSGENS are done to allow for SNA
communication across the Network.
For usage where SNA backbone to Token-Ring communication is
required, the Distributed Console gateway function must reside in an
OS/2 station either attached to the SNA backbone or downstream from a
direct LAN attached 37XX controller. Users must have installed the
following code levels:
o VTAM (TM) Version 3.2, or later (if required)
o For 3725 (NCP) Version 4 Release 3, or later

SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
This product uses password security for session establishment
between two stations. Security auditability is accomplished by the
gateway function, as it logs all connections routed through the
gateway. For direct connection between two stations (switched
asynchronous connection for example), no log is kept, and it is up to
the user to control access to stations via restricted phone numbers
and password information.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
appropriate controls in application systems and communication
facilities.
