  34.  
  35. The function of Communications Manager/2 is available in a client/Server
  36. implementation.  This initial release of the Communications Manager
  37. Client Server/2 supports OS/2 client workstations operation on a token
  38. ring LAN.  The client workstation contains a rich subset of the functions
  39. available in CM/2 1.0, including 3270/5250 terminal emulation.  The
  40. Communications Manager server performs SNA communication services
  41. required by the client.  It can also function as a gateway for clients
  42. and other IBM terminal emulator products.  This new product provides se-
  43. veral significant benefits.  The ability to share resources (such as
  44. communication links) between many clients reduces the cost per worksta-
  45. tion of host communications.  Because most of the communication services
  46. are provided by the server, client workstations require less memory and
  47. DASD than "full sized" workstations without sacrificing function.
  48. Customers can therefore obtain Communications Manager function at a lower
  49. cost per workstation.  Communications Clients can access multiple servers
  50. across the LAN, which enables workload balancing by the server and
  51. provides a degree of backup and fault tolerance.

  53. With the Communications Manager Client Server/2 product, communication
  54. services are concentrated at the server workstation.  This off-loads much
  55. of the work typically performed on a communication workstation.  The
  56. Communications Clients therefore enable customers to accomplish more
  57. with existing workstations.
