Audio Capture & Playback Adapter for the IBM Personal System/2(R) Audio
Capture & Playback Adapter/A for the IBM Personal System/2 Video Capture
Adapter/A for the IBM Personal System/2
The Audio Capture & Playback Adapter, Audio Capture & Playback Adapter/A
and Video Capture Adapter/A are PS/2 adapters providing the capability to
capture, digitize and playback high-quality audio and images on standard
PS/2 hardware. The cards are easy to use and work with standard audio and
video input devices, including video cameras, video cassette players,
microphones, compact disc players and cassette players. The Audio Capture
& Playback Adapters also support a variety of audio output devices for
playback, including headphones, speakers and amplifiers.
The adapters work in conjunction with the Audio Visual Connection program
product, also announced today (Programming Announcement NDD89-351, dated
June 20, 1989). AVC is an exciting application enabling program that
enables users to create and present high-quality, interactive, multi-media
presentations.
The Audio Capture & Playback Adapters and Video Capture Adapter/A are
manufactured by Tecmar, Inc. exclusively for resale and service by IBM.
(R) Registered trademark of the International Business Machines
Corporation.

DESCRIPTION
Audio Capture & Playback Adapters
The Audio Capture & Playback Adapter and Audio Capture & Playback Adapter/A
provide the capability to record and playback high-quality sound for use
with the Personal System/2 product line. The adapters, available for both
microchannel and non-microchannel PS/2 models, are intended for use with
the Audio Visual Connection Program Product (AVC) (Programming Announcement
NDD89-351, dated June 20, 1989).
The adapter accepts audio input signals from a microphone or line output
cord through a standard mini-jack on the card. The adapter converts the
analog signal to a digital format, which is compressed and stored for later
use. Sophisticated, studio-like sound processing techniques employed in
the AVC Audio Editor Feature enable the user to alter the characteristics
of the digitized sound as outlined in Programming Announcement NDD 89-351.
The adapter is also used as a playback vehicle, converting the compressed,
digitized sound back to an analog signal for playback through
headphones/speakers or an amplifier (line out).
The audio card end bracket contains two mini-stereo input jacks for a
microphone or standard line input. Line input sources include VCR,
videodisc and high-fidelity equipment (CD, LP and cassette players). The
bracket also contains two mini-stereo output jacks. One will support
playback to headphones or speakers. The other output jack (line level)
supports audio playback to an amplifier, for presentation to larger
audiences, or to a recording device such as reel-to-reel or cassette tape.
The audio adapters contain a programmable digital signal processor, which
provides programmers or Software Vendors with the capability to develop
alternate applications. The Installation Manual and Technical Reference
document contains hardware-specific information for independent application
development.
Video Capture Adapter/A
The Video Capture Adapter/A provides the capability to capture, display and
digitize high-quality video images for use in presentations and
applications with the Personal System/2 product line. The adapter supports
image capture with the PS/2 Models 50, 55SX, 60, 70 and 80 and is intended
for use with the Audio Visual Connection Program Product (Programming
Announcement NDD89-351, dated June 20, 1989).
The adapter accepts video input signals through a multi-pin connection on
the adapter. The on-board processor converts the analog signal to a
digital format which can be manipulated, compressed and stored by software
for later use. Sophisticated detailed image processing techniques employed
in the AVC Image Editor Feature enable the user to alter the
characteristics of the digitized image as outlined in Programming
Announcement NDD89-351. The video adapter also contains output
connectors, for attachment to a monitor, which allow the user to view live
or captured images during the capturing process. The adapter display
capability is NOT required to run presentations containing captured images.
The standard PS/2 hardware alone enables the complete display of images for
authoring and presentation purposes.
The video adapter end-bracket contains a 20-pin connector. The associated
cable, included with the adapter, supports input/output jacks for
connection to RGB (Red-Green-Blue), NTSC (National Television Standard
Code, also known as Composite Video) and Y/C (Luminance/Chrominance)
devices. The Y/C capability allows the user to capture a significantly
higher-quality image than those available from NTSC. Y/C devices, such as
Super VHS video cameras and VCRs, are now emerging in the video
marketplace.
The Installation manual and Technical Reference documentation contains
hardware-specific information for additional application development.
The Specifications noted refer to the adapter capability. The user should
reference the software offering to determine audio performance and image
quality specifications in their particular environment.
