OS/2 2.1 WINS BEST BUYS OF 1993 AWARD FROM COMPUTER SHOPPER
December 28, 1993
The votes are in for Computer Shopper's Best Buys of 1993 awards and
IBM's OS/2 (*) 2.1 was voted Best Operating System in a poll conducted
of their readers last July and August. Ballots were tabulated by
Shopper's editors, then sent to reviewers for further scrutiny before
the awards were published in the January 1994 issue.
OS/2 2.1 emerged victorious over all the newcomers, including
Windows NT (**), with readers citing OS/2's pre-emptive multitasking a
significant benefit, allowing them to run multiple DOS, Windows and OS/2
programs, unharnessing the power of their 386s and 486s. OS/2's
graphical user interface, Presentation Manager and multimedia
enhancements in this version received kudos as well.
Readers were asked to select products based on their performance, price,
quality and customer service, and IBM's seven day a week, 24 hour a day
HelpCenter contributed to OS/2's success.
This award is a significant achievement for IBM, since it demonstrates
the growing acceptance of OS/2 by the user community.
