  1. TRANSFER OF LAN NETVIEW DEVELOPMENT MISSION

  4.   o   Management is a critical factor in our customers' abil-
  5.       ity to rollout client server solutions.  IBM is provid-
  6.       ing, based on the SystemView* framework, the management
  7.       environment for our customers' to succeed.  The NetView*
  8.       family, which includes NetView/390*, NetView/6000*,
  9.       NetView/6000 on Digital Equipment Corporation's OSF/1**
  10.       and our recently available LAN NetView* on Operating
  11.       System/2* (OS/2), is the linchpin to make this success-
  12.       ful.  And, we will be expanding the family to other
  13.       platforms.

  15.   o   We are very excited about the availability of our newest
  16.       member, LAN NetView; providing a management platform on
  17.       OS/2 with an integrated set of applications from IBM and
  18.       vendors.
  19.  
  20.   o   In order to enhance synergy between the complementary
  21.       IBM NetView family members, we are consolidating all
  22.       NetView product development into one location by moving
  23.       the development for the LAN NetView family of products
  24.       from Austin to Raleigh.
  25.  
  26.   o   This move facilitates the sharing of technology, allow-
  27.       ing movement to a converged platform that will benefit
  28.       from the strengths of both NetView/6000 and LAN NetView.
  29.       The result will be a superior set of management applica-
  30.       tions with greater interoperability and reach, solving
  31.       our customer's problems.  Customers and Independent
  32.       Software Vendors (ISVs) will be protected in the mi-
  33.       gration to the converged platform.
  34.  
  35.   o   Customers want to be able to choose from centralized
  36.       management, decentralized management, or a combination
  37.       of both.  With our family of NetView products that in-
  38.       clude support for many different types of clients, serv-
  39.       ers, and network devices, we are giving customers the
  40.       most flexible solutions available in the industry.  And,
  41.       customers will benefit from this consolidation by seeing
  42.       better interoperability among IBM system management
  43.       platforms and a broader range of applications available
  44.       to solve our customer's management problems.

  46.   o   ISVs will benefit by having a common code base and APIs
  47.       for them to work from on several operating system envi-
  48.       ronments.  Thus, a single investment in a NetView appli-
  49.       cation has tremendous leverage to be used by customers
  50.       on their choice of operating environments.
