  38. VisualAge (R) for COBOL, Report Writer for OS/2 (R) and for Windows
  39. (R) Version 2.0 is a new optional feature of VisualAge for COBOL that
  40. can improve programmer productivity in many aspects of printed output
  41. pertaining to COBOL.  It delivers a general-purpose COBOL printing
  42. facility and provides the familiar host Report Writer function on the
  43. workstation.

  45. VisualAge for COBOL, Report Writer enables users to define and
  46. produce the listings, reports, and displayed summaries that would
  47. normally be required from a COBOL application, but in less time.  It
  48. is a comprehensive set of features built into the COBOL language that
  49. enables programmers to code or modify all types of print layout
  50. quickly and accurately.  Because it mixes naturally with basic COBOL
  51. and uses a similar coding style, it offers the benefits of a powerful
  52. report generation tool without the need to train users in a totally
  53. new language.

  88. DESCRIPTION
  89.  
  90. VisualAge for COBOL, Report Writer is used with IBM VisualAge for
  91. COBOL V2.0 (Standard or Professional) to add support for COBOL Report
  92. Writer language to that product.  The Report Writer precompiler is
  93. invoked before the VisualAge for COBOL compiler.  The precompiler
  94. handles all syntax checking and code generation functions relating to
  95. Report Writer language found in source programs.

  97. Report Writer works in a non-procedural way.  Up to a whole page of
  98. print can be described concisely in the Report section of the Data
  99. Division and output in one operation by a Generate statement.
  100. Clauses are used to specify the appearance, position and origin of
  101. print items, together with any conditions that may affect their
  102. printing.  Control breaks, tabulation, totalling, page headings and
  103. footings are also easily described.  The many abbreviations and
  104. defaults greatly reduce coding, without spoiling the clarity of
  105. source programs.

  107. The Report Writer facility is integrated with compiler operations,
  108. including Workframe and Debug, thus avoiding the extra step usually
  109. associated with preprocessors.

  111. VisualAge for COBOL, Report Writer V2.0 is used in conjunction with
  112. VisualAge for COBOL V2.0 (Standard or Professional) for COBOL
  113. application development on OS/2 and Windows NT.  Applications
  114. developed with VisualAge for COBOL, Report Writer V2.0 can be
  115. executed on OS/2, Windows NT, and Windows 95.
