Overview
To further extend the Version 2 functionality which has recently been
announced for ADSTAR(R) Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) for
OS/2(R), Windows NT, and AIX(R), the following functions are now
being made available for installation and use by ADSM for OS/2, ADSM
for Windows NT, and ADSM for AIX Version 2.1 customers:
o ADSM WebShell Interface
The WebShell interface runs on the client machine for any ADSM
OS/2, Windows 95, Windows NT, or AIX client, and enables the
initiation and management of ADSM backup and restore operations
for these client machines from almost any workstation on almost
any platform or network, via a Web browser. It is downloaded and
installed with the ADSM OS/2, Windows 32-bit, or AIX clients.
o AFS and DFS Support by ADSM
Customers with AFS and Distributed File Service (AFS and DFS)
environments can now utilize ADSM for OS/2, Windows NT, or AIX
Version 2.1 servers to backup and restore AFS and DFS systems,
thus adding to the end user availability and system administration
options already provided by the AFS and DFS systems. This support
is provided by ADSM via the Open Systems Environment support
priced feature for the ADSM AIX client.
o Greater than 2GB File Size Support
Customers with files larger than 2GB can now use ADSM for OS/2,
Windows NT, and AIX V2.1 servers to backup/restore and
archive/retrieve these files from most clients which support these
file sizes. Clients currently known to support greater than 2GB
file sizes include Windows 32-bit (Windows NT), Digital UNIX 4.0,
Novell NetWare, and AIX 4.2 (backup/restore only).
o X/Open API Compliance for the Hewlett-Packard HP-UX 10.01 Client
The ADSM HP-UX 10.01 client now has support for the X/Open Backup
Services Application Program Interface (API) specifications.
Intended Customers
These client enhancements apply to customers who currently have
ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager for OS/2, Windows NT, or AIX
Version 2.1 installed, as well as to new customers.
Key Prerequisites
ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager for OS/2, NT, or AIX Version 2.1
installed.

New Client Enhancements
Following is a description of the new client enhancements that are
being announced for the first time for the OS/2, Windows NT, and AIX
V2.1 ADSM server platforms.
Greater than 2GB File Size: This function extends the ADSM
backup-archive client support to file sizes greater than 2GB,
enabling most client platforms which can process files larger than
2GB to backup/restore via ADSM. This function includes enablement of
both the ADSM command line and GUI to support the larger file size,
up to the file size limits of the operating system for the client
platform. Statistics fields are also widened as appropriate.
Currently, this support is included with the AIX 4.2, Windows NT,
Digital UNIX 4.0, and Novell NetWare clients.
AFS and DFS Support: AFS and DFS support enables backup/restore as
well as some of the other ADSM functions to be applied to AFS and DFS
systems, via the AIX 4.1.4 client. This support requires the Open
Systems Environment support feature (formerly referred to as the
OpenEdition MVS Environment). ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager
(ADSM) AFS/DFS Backup Clients system support consists of the
following programs:
o AFS file backup client programs (command line and GUI)
o DFS file backup client programs (command line and GUI)
o AFS volume agent programs
o DFS fileset agent programs
The AFS file backup client allows you to backup or restore AFS files
and directories. In addition, it backs up AFS access control lists
(ACLs) for directories and includes additional mount point support.
The DFS file backup client allows you to backup or restore DFS files
and directories. In addition, it backs up DFS access control lists
(ACLs) for directories and includes additional mount point support.
The AFS volume BackUp to ADSM (buta) is an interface program between
AFS backup commands and an ADSM server, backing up and restoring AFS
data. The buta interface program accomplishes these processes using
ADSM API function calls. The AFS volume backup agent backs up AFS
data by volume. Through the ADSM API, each full or incremental
volume dump is sent to an ADSM server as a file with the same name as
that of the volume. The volume dump files associated with a dump are
stored in a single file space in ADSM storage called the dump ID
string. An ADSM administrator can delete an AFS backup dump from
ADSM storage by deleting the file space in which it is stored.
The DFS fileset BackUp to ADSM (buta) is an interface program between
DFS backup commands and an ADSM server, backing up and restoring DFS
data. The buta interface program accomplishes these processes using
ADSM API function calls. The DFS fileset backup agent backs up DFS
data by fileset. Through the ADSM API, each full or incremental
fileset dump is sent to an ADSM server as a file with the same name
as that of the fileset. The fileset dump files associated with a
dump are stored in a single file space in ADSM storage called the
dump ID string. An ADSM administrator can delete a DFS backup dump
from ADSM storage by deleting the file space in which it is stored.
ADSM WebShell Interface: Customers with OS/2, Windows 95, Windows
NT, or AIX platforms can now take advantage of the ADSM WebShell
interface. The WebShell interface can be used to manage backup and
restore operations for ADSM OS/2, AIX, Windows 95 or Windows NT
client machines from almost any workstation, on almost any platform,
on almost any network. Also, an ADSM backup/restore administrator
can centralize the backup/restore operations of many ADSM OS/2, AIX,
Windows 95 or Windows NT client machines, via use of the WebShell
interface.
The WebShell interface provides a uniform view across the ADSM
clients, regardless of platform. To use it, all you have to do is
point your Web browser at any ADSM OS/2, AIX, Windows 95 or Windows
NT client machine that is running the WebShell interface.
The WebShell interface runs on the ADSM OS/2, Windows 95, Windows NT,
or AIX client machine, and provides the following ADSM client
operations:
o Status of backup operations
o Incremental (new and changed files) and selective backup
o Restore
The WebShell interface is an option when you install the currently
announced level of one of the ADSM (OS/2, Windows 32-bit, or AIX)
clients. It can then be accessed from Web browsers running on any
other system.
X/Open API Compliance for the HP-UX Client: The ADSM HP-UX 10.01
client now has support for the X/Open Backup Services API
specifications, as well as for the SUN Solaris 2.5 and AIX clients.
ADSM supports the Backup Services API specifications developed by the
X/Open International Standards committee. These specifications
include source procedure calls, structures and return codes used by
the AIX, Solaris 2.5, and HP-UX 10.01 clients. They answer the
requirement to standardize an API between applications needing backup
services and Storage Management vendors.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
The announced ADSM client enhancements, in conjunction with similar
announcements in other ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager
environments, further strengthen the scope of client support provided
by ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager.
