DESCRIPTION
Why Replication?
Businesses today are benefiting from replicating data across a wide
range of applications. Businesses can:
o Reengineer Business Processes -- Many businesses are moving data
and applications to the place of the business transaction to
improve business cycle times and customer responsiveness.
Frequently, these applications must share data with legacy
applications on the host. A replication solution can
automatically deliver the shared data to the target platform while
accommodating data restructuring and high currency requirements
and minimizing network load and network availability requirements.
o Improve Decision Making -- Businesses are looking to increase
their competitiveness by increasing their employees'
decision-making authority. To give employees the information they
need to make effective, accurate decisions, businesses are
building decision-support databases and data warehouses. These
new decision-support databases are designed to assist in
day-to-day decision-making activities, from determining what items
to stock in various stores to identifying to which customers new
products should be marketed. Replication technology can support
decision-support applications by improving data availability, data
access performance, and data usability.
o Speed Application Deployment -- It is estimated that over 50% of
the existing application backlog can be addressed through
packaged, off-the-shelf applications. The majority of these
applications are based on the relational model and use standard
SQL. Data replication enables many customers to utilize these
applications by mapping, reformatting, and delivering data from
legacy environments to relational databases.
o Increase Online Throughput -- To accommodate business growth,
customers may need to off-load query processing to make room for
increasing transaction processing requirements. Offloading query
processing reduces contention that impacts online transaction
processing (OLTP) response time.
o Improve System Availability -- Businesses are being driven closer
and closer to 24 x 7 availability to maintain competitiveness and
satisfy customer demands. This puts significant pressure on the
batch window. The batch window often accommodates planned
outages, such as database reorganization. Replication can create
backup systems to which access can be redirected during such
planned outages. Replication can help eliminate extract
processing from your batch workloads by replicating data, in the
background, throughout the day.
o Support Audit Requirements -- Some customers are faced with
increasingly stringent audit requirements. Years' worth of
information must be kept that details who changed what and when.
Replication may provide necessary audit information, including
user ID and other transaction details, in archive histories that
can be easily accessed as required.
o Accommodate Mixed Environments -- Businesses are migrating
applications from legacy systems or replicating data between
multivendor environments to reduce application development time,
reduce application maintenance costs, or consolidate data
following corporate acquisitions or mergers. Replication can
assist by allowing data to be shared across a mix of data stores.
IBM's Data Replication Solution
IBM's Data Replication solution is a set of modular components that
gives you flexibility to tailor the replication environment to your
needs. The component products are:
o DataPropagator Relational -- provides refresh and update
propagation among the DB2 family of databases. Refresh replaces
the entire contents of a copy from the source; Update transfers
only the changes that occurred since the last copy.
o DataPropagator NonRelational -- provides update propagation on
MVS(R) systems from IMS(TM) to DB2 and supports coexistence
between IMS and DB2 with bidirectional propagation.
o DataRefresher -- provides refresh support from a wide variety of
MVS and VM sources to the DB2 family.
o DataHub -- provides a single control point for administering the
replication environment.
o DataJoiner -- provides a multiserver database supporting
transparent read and write of multivendor stores, enabling
replication between multivendor databases.
Key features of IBM's Data Replication solution include:
o Versatile infrastructure to support operational, informational,
and mobile environments
Varying applications levy different requirements on the
replication system. For example, operational applications tend to
require frequent synchronization with limited data enhancement,
while informational applications often require more stable data
with complex data manipulation. IBM's solution gracefully spans
these domains, providing a reuseable and extensible replication
infrastructure for rapid response to evolving business demands.
In mobile computing environments, connections are infrequent and
unpredictable. Key to supporting mobile computing is the ability
to initiate all data transfers from the mobile unit, whether
downloading from a central server or uploading for consolidated
processing. IBM supports both source site-initiated and target
site-initiated data transfers, which are required for mobile
computing. Additionally, administration can be centrally managed,
then asynchronously executed.
o Broad legacy data support that lets businesses leverage existing
assets for client/server environments
The IBM Data Replication solution lets you bring data from IMS
databases, DB2 databases, VSAM datasets, and flat files to the DB2
family of databases across MVS, VM, VSE, OS/400(R), AIX(R), HP-UX,
the Solaris Operating Environment, Windows NT, and OS/2(R)
platforms.
o Efficient operations to protect performance-sensitive production
systems
Because the source data for replication is likely to be in your
production systems, IBM has designed its replication solution to
minimize impact to OLTP performance. Changes are read from the
database log or journal to minimize locking contention for source
tables. Batched commit processing minimizes forced I/O activity.
o Scalable design that fosters smooth growth
In replication environments, scalability means much more than just
the ability to run on bigger hardware. Scalability means you can
run in any environment from the smallest to the largest, across
many network types, with a varying number of database servers and
varying amounts of data, all with minimal impact on database,
network, and personnel resources. IBM's Data Replication solution
is designed for such scalability.
o Flexible delivery approaches to control network load
As businesses distribute data, one of the most difficult
challenges is that of managing the network. IBM provides
flexibility in data distribution, including:
- Subset distribution through join views to subset data by values
not in the replicated data itself
- Eliminating hot-spot effects from the network load
- Summarizing data before, rather than after, the data transfer
- Providing fan-out replication where copies can be made from
other copies for large-scale distribution
- Providing synchronization control on a copy-by-copy basis
o Data enhancement features to make data more meaningful to end
users
Data should be customized for the target application. IBM's Data
Replication solution supports subsetting by rows and columns,
calculating new columns, translating data from encoded formats to
descriptive formats, summarizing data, joining data, or any other
transformation that can be expressed using SQL.
o Easy-to-administer products to speed deployment and minimize
system maintenance costs
Businesses are looking for offerings that can be implemented
quickly and can be automated to minimize the impact to existing
staff. IBM provides GUIs, allowing sources and targets to be
defined with point-and-click operations. Table allocation and
initialization are handled automatically. The replication system
can be changed dynamically without impacting the entire
replication network. And, best of all, existing applications
continue to run without changing, recompiling, rebinding, or
relinking.
o Architected interfaces to support interoperability between
multivendor environments
Heterogeneity in a customer's database environment is common.
IBM's Data Replication solution addresses the multivendor
environment as follows:
- IBM's architecture is built on standard SQL to leverage the
database engine capabilities for data enhancement, network
connectivity, and data security.
- An architected data staging area supports interoperability
among multivendor databases, between heterogeneous data models,
and among products from independent software vendors.
- IBM replication products directly support multivendor sources
and targets through IBM's multi-database server product,
DataJoiner.
DataPropagator Relational
DataPropagator Relational provides replication between relational
sources and targets and defines the architecture for the IBM Data
Replication solution. The components of DataPropagator Relational
are described below.
The Administration component, DataPropagator Relational for OS/2,
together with DataHub for OS/2 provide the GUI that you use to:
o Register tables as sources
o Create and maintain copy definitions
o Grant registration and subscription privileges to users
The Capture components provide update propagation, capturing changes
made to data in registered source tables by reading the database log
or journal. They place the captured changes into staging tables.
Capture components include:
o Capture for MVS
o Capture for OS/400
o Capture for AIX
o Capture for HP-UX
o Capture for OS/2
o Capture for the Solaris Operating Environment
o Capture for Windows NT
The Apply components read the changed data, previously captured and
stored in a staging table, and apply them to the target tables.
Apply components can also read data directly from source tables, for
example, for a full refresh. Supporting both update and refresh
copying provides greater flexibility and automation in a replication
environment.
Apply components also tailor the data to your specifications as they
copy data to the targets. You can:
o Create new columns
o Summarize data
o Join data
o Translate data
The Apply components allow you to create:
o Point-in-time tables, which represent source data at a particular
point in time
o History tables, which contain a record of information over time
o Staging tables, which can be used as a source for further copies,
supporting a consistent data environment and providing flexibility
in data distribution across the network
You can subset data for distribution through column and row
specifications, replicating only the data you need. Unique to
DataPropagator Relational is the ability to support subselects for
joins and unions, allowing you to subset according to a value not in
the table being replicated. This can be a key feature when
replicating from normalized databases where most values are not
redundantly stored.
Finally, an Apply component can manage many copies at a single site.
Multiple Apply components can run concurrently at different sites,
each managing different numbers and types of copies from the same
source. Each copy can have different definitions and refresh
criteria.
Apply components include:
o Apply for MVS
o Apply for OS/400
o Apply for AIX
o Apply for HP-UX
o Apply for OS/2
o Apply for the Solaris Operating Environment
o Apply for Windows NT

PRODUCT POSITIONING
IBM's data replication products address refresh, update, enhancement,
and administration requirements. Each product is characterized by
the primary function it provides, and may be qualified by the type of
DBMS it supports.
DataHub for OS/2 provides the administrative point of control for an
integrated data replication solution spanning central and distributed
environments. Administrative function that is unique to products
such as DataRefresher and DataPropagator Relational Version 1.2.1, is
visually integrated into the DataHub for OS/2 user interface when
present on the same workstation.
Data Replication can be positioned as:
o Building information warehouses for decision support and executive
information systems.
o Offloading query processing from production systems for the
purposes of either reducing production table contention and/or
reducing production CPU utilization.
o Downsizing applications or building client/server applications,
yet requiring shared data with legacy systems.
DataPropagator Relational Version 1.2.1 is the product for a
comprehensive data replication solution based on DRDA(R) within a
relational environment, providing refresh, update, and enhancement
capabilities among the DB2 family of databases. DataPropagator
Relational Version 1.2.1 is particularly suitable for providing
refresh/update for data on a repetitive basis because it provides an
automated replication initiation facility that enables a user to
specify how often and how many times a replication operation is to be
performed.
DataRefresher can be positioned as providing an initial full refresh
of data required for further propagation by DataPropagator
NonRelational, and DataPropagator Relational DataRefresher provides
a comprehensive set of functions to refresh relational databases,
both central and client/server, from legacy applications on MVS,
based on IMS, VSAM, and sequential files. Generic input and output
structures allow data to be expanded to a wide variety of sources and
targets, while the administrative interface provides an intuitive,
GUI-based approach to the definition of the data sources, targets,
and their relationships.
DataPropagator NonRelational can be positioned as the product to
propagate IMS data asynchronously to DB2, and with DataPropagator
Relational to the workstation databases.
