  67. solution, expands its reach by providing new data sources and

  71.    Capture for the Solaris Operating Environment provide log-based
  72.    change capture, enabling replication source support from DB2(R)
  73.    databases on Windows NT, HP-UX, and the Solaris Operating
  74.    Environment.  These components operate with DB2 Version 2.1.1 for
  75.    their respective platforms.

  109. Why Replication?
  110.  
  111. Businesses today are benefiting from replicating data across a wide
  112. range of applications.  Businesses can:
  113.  
  114. o  Reengineer Business Processes -- Many businesses are moving data
  115.    and applications to the place of the business transaction to
  116.    improve business cycle times and customer responsiveness.
  117.    Frequently, these applications must share data with legacy
  118.    applications on the host.  A replication solution can
  119.    automatically deliver the shared data to the target platform while
  120.    accommodating data restructuring and high currency requirements
  121.    and minimizing network load and network availability requirements.

  123. o  Improve Decision Making -- Businesses are looking to increase
  124.    their competitiveness by increasing their employees'
  125.    decision-making authority.  To give employees the information they
  126.    need to make effective, accurate decisions, businesses are
  127.    building decision-support databases and data warehouses.  These

  129.    day-to-day decision-making activities, from determining what items
  130.    to stock in various stores to identifying to which customers new
  131.    products should be marketed.  Replication technology can support

  136.    the existing application backlog can be addressed through
  137.    packaged, off-the-shelf applications.  The majority of these
  138.    applications are based on the relational model and use standard

  140.    applications by mapping, reformatting, and delivering data from
  141.    legacy environments to relational databases.

  181.    propagation among the DB2 family of databases.  Refresh replaces
  182.    the entire contents of a copy from the source; Update transfers
  183.    only the changes that occurred since the last copy.

  185. o  DataPropagator NonRelational -- provides update propagation on
  186.    MVS(R) systems from IMS(TM) to DB2 and supports coexistence
  187.    between IMS and DB2 with bidirectional propagation.

  189. o  DataRefresher -- provides refresh support from a wide variety of
  190.    MVS and VM sources to the DB2 family.

  192. o  DataHub -- provides a single control point for administering the
  193.    replication environment.

  196.    transparent read and write of multivendor stores, enabling
  197.    replication between multivendor databases.

  204.    Varying applications levy different requirements on the
  205.    replication system.  For example, operational applications tend to
  206.    require frequent synchronization with limited data enhancement,
  207.    while informational applications often require more stable data
  208.    with complex data manipulation.  IBM's solution gracefully spans
  209.    these domains, providing a reuseable and extensible replication
  210.    infrastructure for rapid response to evolving business demands.

  212.    In mobile computing environments, connections are infrequent and
  213.    unpredictable.  Key to supporting mobile computing is the ability
  214.    to initiate all data transfers from the mobile unit, whether

  217.    site-initiated data transfers, which are required for mobile

  225.    databases, DB2 databases, VSAM datasets, and flat files to the DB2
  226.    family of databases across MVS, VM, VSE, OS/400(R), AIX(R), HP-UX,
  227.    the Solaris Operating Environment, Windows NT, and OS/2(R)
  228.    platforms.

  230. o  Efficient operations to protect performance-sensitive production

  233.    Because the source data for replication is likely to be in your
  234.    production systems, IBM has designed its replication solution to
  235.    minimize impact to OLTP performance.  Changes are read from the
  236.    database log or journal to minimize locking contention for source
  237.    tables.  Batched commit processing minimizes forced I/O activity.

  241.    In replication environments, scalability means much more than just
  242.    the ability to run on bigger hardware.  Scalability means you can
  243.    run in any environment from the smallest to the largest, across
  244.    many network types, with a varying number of database servers and

  246.    network, and personnel resources.  IBM's Data Replication solution

  270.    Data should be customized for the target application.  IBM's Data
  271.    Replication solution supports subsetting by rows and columns,
  272.    calculating new columns, translating data from encoded formats to
  273.    descriptive formats, summarizing data, joining data, or any other
  274.    transformation that can be expressed using SQL.

  276. o  Easy-to-administer products to speed deployment and minimize
  277.    system maintenance costs

  279.    Businesses are looking for offerings that can be implemented
  280.    quickly and can be automated to minimize the impact to existing
  281.    staff.  IBM provides GUIs, allowing sources and targets to be
  282.    defined with point-and-click operations.  Table allocation and
  283.    initialization are handled automatically.  The replication system
  284.    can be changed dynamically without impacting the entire
  285.    replication network.  And, best of all, existing applications
  286.    continue to run without changing, recompiling, rebinding, or

  304.    -  IBM replication products directly support multivendor sources

  309. DataPropagator Relational
  310.  
  311. DataPropagator Relational provides replication between relational
  312. sources and targets and defines the architecture for the IBM Data
  313. Replication solution.  The components of DataPropagator Relational
  314. are described below.

  316. The Administration component, DataPropagator Relational for OS/2,
  317. together with DataHub for OS/2 provide the GUI that you use to:
  318.  
  319. o  Register tables as sources
  320. o  Create and maintain copy definitions
  321. o  Grant registration and subscription privileges to users
  322.  
  323. The Capture components provide update propagation, capturing changes
  324. made to data in registered source tables by reading the database log
  325. or journal.  They place the captured changes into staging tables.
  326. Capture components include:
  327.  
  328. o  Capture for MVS
  329. o  Capture for OS/400
  330. o  Capture for AIX
  331. o  Capture for HP-UX
  332. o  Capture for OS/2
  333. o  Capture for the Solaris Operating Environment

  336. The Apply components read the changed data, previously captured and
  337. stored in a staging table, and apply them to the target tables.
  338. Apply components can also read data directly from source tables, for
  339. example, for a full refresh.  Supporting both update and refresh
  340. copying provides greater flexibility and automation in a replication
  341. environment.

  343. Apply components also tailor the data to your specifications as they
  344. copy data to the targets.  You can:

  346. o  Create new columns
  347. o  Summarize data
  348. o  Join data
  349. o  Translate data

  351. The Apply components allow you to create:
  352.  
  353. o  Point-in-time tables, which represent source data at a particular
  354.    point in time
  355. o  History tables, which contain a record of information over time
  356. o  Staging tables, which can be used as a source for further copies,
  357.    supporting a consistent data environment and providing flexibility
  358.    in data distribution across the network

  360. You can subset data for distribution through column and row
  361. specifications, replicating only the data you need.  Unique to
  362. DataPropagator Relational is the ability to support subselects for
  363. joins and unions, allowing you to subset according to a value not in
  364. the table being replicated.  This can be a key feature when
  365. replicating from normalized databases where most values are not
  366. redundantly stored.
  367.  
  368. Finally, an Apply component can manage many copies at a single site.
  369. Multiple Apply components can run concurrently at different sites,
  370. each managing different numbers and types of copies from the same
  371. source.  Each copy can have different definitions and refresh
  372. criteria.
