DESCRIPTION
IBM CallPath DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1 adds the following
enhancements:
o Improved publications support providing soft copy publications
that may be viewed or printed, plus the addition of a Problem
Determination Guide to assist the customer in the development and
testing of applications
o Increased flexibility of system configurations and line density is
now provided by increasing the number of line interface and voice
processing boards available for DirectTalk/2. The higher density
boards allow customers a greater choice of personal computers
offering increased performance and cost benefits by reducing the
number of card slots required.
- D/41D revision 3 -- provides a cost effective reduced function
solution for venues such as call centers where the use of
Text-to-Speech or Voice Recognition is not required. This
board provides the same function as the D/41ESC but does not
have any PEB or SCbus support.
- D/41ESC -- provides four telephone line interface circuits for
direct connection to loop-start lines. It uses DSP technology
to provide telephony signalling and voice processing, Dual Tone
Multi Frequency (DTMF) detection with cut-through, and advanced
call progress analysis. This board may be configured with
either the SCbus or PEB bus allowing support for existing and
new DirectTalk/2 TTS and VR supported technologies.
- D/160SC-LS -- provides the same DSP functions as the D/41ESC
for 16 lines in a single card slot.
- D/240SC -- A high density voice processing board that supports
24 voice channels over either the PEB or SCbus in a single card
slot replacing 3 D/81A or 2 D121B boards allowing for increased
system configurations. This board includes SCbus support
giving access to new TTS and VR technologies with the same DSP
functions as provided by the D/41ESC board.
- D/320SC -- provides the same function as the D/240SC board for
32 voice channels in a single card slot. It replaces 4 D/81A
boards and is ideal for use in countries with E1 digital
telephony interfaces. When used with the Aculab board, only
the PEB bus is supported.
o Dialogic SCbus -- part of SCSA, it provides real time high speed
resource sharing allowing multiple technologies to work together.
The SCbus is regarded as an industry standard that is now
supported on all new Dialogic interface and voice processing
boards as well as the new Antares 2000/50 DSP resource board.
This new standard is expected to replace the PEB bus in the
future.
The SCbus provides up to 1024 time slots allowing for greater
flexibility of resource sharing than on the PEB bus.
o Dialogic Antares 2000/50 DSP platform adds new technology support
for Text-to-Speech and Voice Recognition technologies to be shared
across the SCbus. DirectTalk/2 V2.1 will support the following
technologies running on the Antares 2000/50 board:
- Lernout and Hauspie (L&H)- up to 24 channels (6 per DSP)
Text-to-Speech support including correct handling of date, time
and currency in the following languages:
-- U.S. English
-- Dutch
-- French
-- German
-- Italian
-- Spanish (Castilian)
- Voice Control Systems (VCS) - up to 32 discrete or 8 continuous
channels of Voice Recognition providing the following
functions:
-- 16 word discrete and continuous digit vocabularies. VCS
plan to support all the vocabularies that are available on
the VR/40 and VR/160 (VRP) boards
-- Cut-through in discrete mode allows users to speak commands
at any time during a prompt. Pulse phone users may now
interrupt prerecorded messages and progress through the
system quickly, the same way DTMF users currently interrupt
prompts.
A single Antares board cannot have both technologies running at
the same time although more than one Antares board can be
installed in a system to allow both VR and TTS to be supported.
This resource can be shared across the PEB or SCbus with any
suitable supported voice processing boards.
o Analog Display Services Interface provides the ability to send
data for display on an ADSI phone during a normal voice call as
per the Bellcore defined ADSI standard providing the ability to
send and display data on the screen of a suitable ADSI device.
ADSI scripts are compiled in the Bellcore format before being
included in an existing application. The script language allows
DirectTalk/2 variables to be substituted and sent to the ADSI
device.
o Graphical User Interface for the following functions:
- ADSI development
- Node manager
- Install procedure: An easy to use installation procedure that
will provide default settings based on the installed hardware.
A sample application is provided to verify the system is
working.
- Setup (Configurator): You can configure each node in your
DirectTalk/2 system to meet your specific requirements using
the following programs:
-- DirectTalk/2 Setup: This allows you to set or change
configuration settings for the base system and optional
features.
-- Telephony Server Configuration: Enables you to set or
change telephony parameters.
o Extend call functions for E1
- Call transfer
-- Provides the ability to simulate call transfer where this
function is not available on the PBX.
- Call referral
-- Detect tones sent from agent
-- Monitor referral for disconnect from agent or caller
-- Release agent only
-- Move from referral transfer
- Attach an agent on an E1 trunk
- Play voice to an agent prior to call connection
o Enhanced Node Manager lets you monitor the status of application
sessions and telephone lines, and lets you issue commands to start
and stop application sessions on local or remote LAN-connected
systems. The Node Manager now includes the following new
functions:
- Improved Single System Image
- Local and remote system management
- Multiple views of any node at the same time
- Multiple nodes may be viewed at the same time
- Multiple managers of any node
o Enhanced Host Communications support providing:
- Support for Personal Communications for OS/2 (PC/3270, PC for
AS/400)
- Removal of the 26 3270 host sessions limitation
- Support for Communications Manager/2 and Communications
Server/2
- NetView Alerts via Communications Manager/2
- Program access to NetView Alerts
-- New system action and API to send an alert
-- Alerts Probe support providing a means for informing a user
application when an alert is being sent
o Extended NLS display and keyboard support with ARTIC Portmaster
Adapter/A or Multiport Model 2 adapters providing the following
code page support:

Text-to-Speech Support
Dialogic's TTS/20/40/80: IBM CallPath DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1
supports these boards providing support for the following language:
o U.S. English
The Dialogic TTS boards uses the BeSTspeech(**) T-T-S Technology
developed by Berkeley Speech Technologies offers simultaneous
text-to-speech synthesis on two, four or eight channels of a single
PC expansion slot. You can create applications using digitally
stored information that is spoken and played out to a caller without
any human intervention, providing control over pronunciation and
voice characteristics.
The TTS software has an extensive, flexible text normalizer rule base
that converts letters to phonemes, the basic unit of speech. It
includes a system dictionary that contains over 400 abbreviations and
700 other terms. The text normalizer analyzes the content of the
text in order to provide accurate pronunciations.
In addition to the standard normalizer, the application can
extensively customize pronunciation by way of a user dictionary,
phonetic read mode and resets. The reset functions include speaking
rate, overall gain, pauses between words and spellout mode.
Antares Text-to-Speech (TTS) Support: This is provided by support
for L&H technology running on the Dialogic Antares board providing 6,
12 18 or 24 channels in the following languages:
o U.S. English
o Dutch
o German
o French
o Italian
o Spanish (Castilian)
The L&H technology offers the following functions:
o Correct handling of abbreviations, dates, currencies, bank account
numbers, social security numbers, time indications, phone numbers,
quotation marks, acronyms, parentheses, apostrophes, and
punctuation marks.
o Prosody -- prosodic phrases automatically provided for each
sentence. The system also creates intonation contours and a
correct duration for each phoneme
o 24 TTS channels (6 per DSP)
o Selectable volume, speech rate and pitch level controls
o Exception dictionary -- can be developed by the customer for
uncommon words, such as last names, using a DOS utility
o Minimal load on host software for control of TTS functionality
o The technology is based on parameterized segment concatenation
algorithms, where basic human voice segments such as diphones,
triphones and tetraphones are stored and used to convert the text
into speech. An in-depth language specific linguistic knowledge
is used to convert the input text into phonetic transcription, to
perform a lexical and syntactical analysis and to create proper
prosodic contours.
Compatibility
o The IBM CallPath DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1 Node Manager, both
Interactive and Batch, does not provide management for previous
versions of DirectTalk/2, but will report the status of a node
from a previous version.
o Previous versions of DirectTalk/2 Node Manager, both Interactive
and Batch, cannot manage IBM CallPath DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1
o Any DirectTalk/2 applications written for Version 2.01 or 2.0,
using only system-supplied user actions, will run with no changes
required.
o Installation of DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1 with existing Dialogic
Voice Communication Kits or Voice Recognition Kits requires that
new Dialogic device drivers contained in the DirectTalk/2
Version 2.1 package be installed prior to DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1
installation.
Limitations
o Antares VR support cannot coexist with any other Dialogic VR
product (for example, VR/160).
o DirectTalk/2 V2.1 does not support cut-through on continuous
vocabularies with the Antares board.
o OS/2 V2.11 is not supported.
o TTS support on the Antares card can only support one language per
board. If more that one language is required, 2 Antares boards
must be installed.
o Berkley TTS is not supported with the Aculab card.
o Voice Recognition, line size, Text-to-Speech, and host
communication features are limited by the available personal
computer slots. Customers should ensure configurations can be
supported by the number of available ISA PC slots.
o DirectTalk/2 requires the use of Dialogic Voice Processing kits.
available directly from Dialogic.
o Customers must ensure that the power requirements of the adapters
do not exceed bus slot power capabilities of their selected
computer system.
o Although many IBM OS/2 certified personal computers may meet the
hardware description as specified in the Technical Information
section, IBM does not guarantee product performance and operation
of these systems.
o Host Communications
- IBM Communications Manager/2 V1.11
3270 via EHLLAPI (Up to 26 sessions)
5250 via EHLLAPI (Up to 15 sessions)

3270 terminal emulation (See below)
- 3270 via LUA or Artic, the lesser of:
4 X the number of lines or
(122 -- the number of lines) +2 if no Voice Messaging
Performance Considerations: The performance criteria is dependant on
the following:
o The number of lines
o The number and type of host communications
o The number of features such as TDD, VM or ADSI and the number of
channels of VR and TTS
o System unit resources
It is recommended that the IBM CallPath DirectTalk/2 General
Information Manual and Planning Guide (GB35-4403) and the following
configuration aid are used to determine the required system:
o DT2CFG is available on the internet on URL
http://www.hursley.ibm.com/callpath/dt2cfg.html
This package will provide recommended system hardware and software
configurations.
Planning Information
To assist customers, IBM CallPath Solutions Marketing and IBM
Business Partners have application development integration and
consulting services based on the CallPath DirectTalk product line.
To further enhance the product line, IBM and IBM Business Partners
have integrated voice processing applications and application
development offerings. Taking advantage of DirectTalk/2's
open-system design, several IBM business partners support
DirectTalk/2 and have provided turn-key solutions including
facsimile, pager, computer help desk, order entry, employee benefits,
and banking applications.
Information is also available via the CallPath Solutions on the
Internet URL:
http://www.raleigh.ibm.com/cti/ctiover.html
For customers with critical applications, a spare unit should be
considered. The recommended method is to have two units to serve the
application. For example, if 16 lines are required, two 8 line
systems can be installed.
When choosing DirectTalk/2, you must consider both hardware and
software requirements. DirectTalk/2 operates on the IBM Personal
Computer 486DX or higher processor with the appropriate memory and
fixed-disk requirements. The system can run as a stand-alone system
or in connection with a host computer, which may be an IBM AS/400, an
IBM S/390(R), or an ASCII host via TCP/IP connection.
The open interface also provides you with the opportunity to connect
to non-IBM hosts and perform host connectivity via APPC. However,
these features require that the customer write C language code and
utilize the open APIs of DirectTalk/2.
DirectTalk/2 can operate as a stand-alone system or communicate with
a host computer (S/390 or AS/400) via terminal emulation or APPC.
For more information on planning, refer to the General Information
and Planning Guide.
Customer Responsibilities: The customer is responsible for
installation and development of the voice applications. The customer
can also request these services through the local IBM office, IBM
CallPath Solutions Marketing, as well as through one of the IBM
Business Partners available that are trained in voice application
solutions. DirectTalk/2 is a system that provides an environment for
easy to develop, customizable voice processing applications.
o Site Planning: When preparing for the installation of
DirectTalk/2, you need to consider a number of requirements
relating to the DirectTalk/2 voice processing system, such as:
- Estimating telephone traffic
- Power requirements
- Environmental requirements
- Telephone requirements
- Host computer communications software, hardware, cables, and so
forth
o Problem Determination: It is the customer's responsibility to
perform problem determination using documentation such as the
Problem Solving Guide.
If an error has occurred, this error code information should be
given to IBM (see the Program Services section below). If the
error that occurred is a known hardware error, contact the
hardware supplier (Dialogic or Aculab) for assistance. If the
error that occurred is a known telephone network problem, contact
your local telephone company. If this product was acquired from a
source other than IBM, the customer should consult the provider of
the software.
For more information on customer responsibilities, please refer to
the General Information and Planning Guide.
Installability: The installation procedure now implements the IBM
Installer/2 and provides an installation procedure that is now
consistent across the majority of IBM software products.
Packaging: IBM CallPath DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1 Base Package
