  34. IBM CallPath(R) DirectTalk/2(TM) Voice Processing System automates
  35. telephone inquiry and data entry by allowing your callers to access
  36. your host system databases via their telephone.  A full description
  37. is available in the DirectTalk/2 General Information Manual.

  39. DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1 adds the following enhancements:

  42.    adding support for Dialogic D/41ESC, D/240SC, and D/320SC boards

  94. DESCRIPTION
  95.  
  96. IBM CallPath DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1 adds the following
  97. enhancements:
  98.  
  99. o  Improved publications support providing soft copy publications
  100.    that may be viewed or printed, plus the addition of a Problem
  101.    Determination Guide to assist the customer in the development and
  102.    testing of applications
  103.  
  104. o  Increased flexibility of system configurations and line density is
  105.    now provided by increasing the number of line interface and voice
  106.    processing boards available for DirectTalk/2.  The higher density
  107.    boards allow customers a greater choice of personal computers
  108.    offering increased performance and cost benefits by reducing the
  109.    number of card slots required.
  110.  
  111.    -  D/41D revision 3 -- provides a cost effective reduced function
  112.       solution for venues such as call centers where the use of
  113.       Text-to-Speech or Voice Recognition is not required.  This
  114.       board provides the same function as the D/41ESC but does not
  115.       have any PEB or SCbus support.
  116.  
  117.    -  D/41ESC -- provides four telephone line interface circuits for
  118.       direct connection to loop-start lines.  It uses DSP technology
  119.       to provide telephony signalling and voice processing, Dual Tone
  120.       Multi Frequency (DTMF) detection with cut-through, and advanced
  121.       call progress analysis.  This board may be configured with
  122.       either the SCbus or PEB bus allowing support for existing and
  123.       new DirectTalk/2 TTS and VR supported technologies.
  124.  
  125.    -  D/160SC-LS -- provides the same DSP functions as the D/41ESC
  126.       for 16 lines in a single card slot.
  127.  
  128.    -  D/240SC -- A high density voice processing board that supports
  129.       24 voice channels over either the PEB or SCbus in a single card
  130.       slot replacing 3 D/81A or 2 D121B boards allowing for increased
  131.       system configurations.  This board includes SCbus support
  132.       giving access to new TTS and VR technologies with the same DSP
  133.       functions as provided by the D/41ESC board.
  134.  
  135.    -  D/320SC -- provides the same function as the D/240SC board for
  136.       32 voice channels in a single card slot.  It replaces 4 D/81A
  137.       boards and is ideal for use in countries with E1 digital
  138.       telephony interfaces.  When used with the Aculab board, only
  139.       the PEB bus is supported.
  140.  
  141. o  Dialogic SCbus -- part of SCSA, it provides real time high speed
  142.    resource sharing allowing multiple technologies to work together.
  143.  
  144.    The SCbus is regarded as an industry standard that is now
  145.    supported on all new Dialogic interface and voice processing
  146.    boards as well as the new Antares 2000/50 DSP resource board.
  147.    This new standard is expected to replace the PEB bus in the
  148.    future.
  149.  
  150.    The SCbus provides up to 1024 time slots allowing for greater
  151.    flexibility of resource sharing than on the PEB bus.
  152.  
  153. o  Dialogic Antares 2000/50 DSP platform adds new technology support
  154.    for Text-to-Speech and Voice Recognition technologies to be shared
  155.    across the SCbus.  DirectTalk/2 V2.1 will support the following
  156.    technologies running on the Antares 2000/50 board:
  157.  
  158.    -  Lernout and Hauspie (L&H)- up to 24 channels (6 per DSP)
  159.       Text-to-Speech support including correct handling of date, time
  160.       and currency in the following languages:
  161.  
  162.       -- U.S. English
  163.       -- Dutch
  164.       -- French
  165.       -- German
  166.       -- Italian
  167.       -- Spanish (Castilian)
  168.  
  169.    -  Voice Control Systems (VCS) - up to 32 discrete or 8 continuous
  170.       channels of Voice Recognition providing the following
  171.       functions:
  172.  
  173.       -- 16 word discrete and continuous digit vocabularies.  VCS
  174.          plan to support all the vocabularies that are available on
  175.          the VR/40 and VR/160 (VRP) boards
  176.       -- Cut-through in discrete mode allows users to speak commands
  177.          at any time during a prompt.  Pulse phone users may now
  178.          interrupt prerecorded messages and progress through the
  179.          system quickly, the same way DTMF users currently interrupt
  180.          prompts.
  181.  
  182.    A single Antares board cannot have both technologies running at
  183.    the same time although more than one Antares board can be
  184.    installed in a system to allow both VR and TTS to be supported.
  185.  
  186.    This resource can be shared across the PEB or SCbus with any
  187.    suitable supported voice processing boards.
  188.  
  189. o  Analog Display Services Interface provides the ability to send
  190.    data for display on an ADSI phone during a normal voice call as
  191.    per the Bellcore defined ADSI standard providing the ability to
  192.    send and display data on the screen of a suitable ADSI device.
  193.  
  194.    ADSI scripts are compiled in the Bellcore format before being
  195.    included in an existing application.  The script language allows
  196.    DirectTalk/2 variables to be substituted and sent to the ADSI
  197.    device.

  199. o  Graphical User Interface for the following functions:

  202.    -  Node manager
  203.    -  Install procedure:  An easy to use installation procedure that
  204.       will provide default settings based on the installed hardware.
  205.       A sample application is provided to verify the system is

  208.       DirectTalk/2 system to meet your specific requirements using
  209.       the following programs:

  211.       -- DirectTalk/2 Setup:  This allows you to set or change

  214.       -- Telephony Server Configuration:  Enables you to set or
  215.          change telephony parameters.

  844. Dialogic's TTS/20/40/80:  IBM CallPath DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1
  845. supports these boards providing support for the following language:

  849. The Dialogic TTS boards uses the BeSTspeech(**) T-T-S Technology
  850. developed by Berkeley Speech Technologies offers simultaneous
  851. text-to-speech synthesis on two, four or eight channels of a single
  852. PC expansion slot.  You can create applications using digitally
  853. stored information that is spoken and played out to a caller without
  854. any human intervention, providing control over pronunciation and
  855. voice characteristics.
  856.  
  857. The TTS software has an extensive, flexible text normalizer rule base
  858. that converts letters to phonemes, the basic unit of speech.  It
  859. includes a system dictionary that contains over 400 abbreviations and
  860. 700 other terms.  The text normalizer analyzes the content of the
  861. text in order to provide accurate pronunciations.
  862.  
  863. In addition to the standard normalizer, the application can
  864. extensively customize pronunciation by way of a user dictionary,
  865. phonetic read mode and resets.  The reset functions include speaking
  866. rate, overall gain, pauses between words and spellout mode.
  867.  
  868. Antares Text-to-Speech (TTS) Support:  This is provided by support
  869. for L&H technology running on the Dialogic Antares board providing 6,
  870. 12 18 or 24 channels in the following languages:
  871.  
  872. o  U.S. English
  873. o  Dutch

  876. o  Italian
  877. o  Spanish (Castilian)
  878.  
  879. The L&H technology offers the following functions:
  880.  
  881. o  Correct handling of abbreviations, dates, currencies, bank account

  883.    quotation marks, acronyms, parentheses, apostrophes, and
  884.    punctuation marks.
  885. o  Prosody -- prosodic phrases automatically provided for each
  886.    sentence.  The system also creates intonation contours and a
  887.    correct duration for each phoneme
  888. o  24 TTS channels (6 per DSP)
  889. o  Selectable volume, speech rate and pitch level controls
  890. o  Exception dictionary -- can be developed by the customer for
  891.    uncommon words, such as last names, using a DOS utility
  892. o  Minimal load on host software for control of TTS functionality
  893. o  The technology is based on parameterized segment concatenation
  894.    algorithms, where basic human voice segments such as diphones,
  895.    triphones and tetraphones  are stored and used to convert the text
  896.    into speech.  An in-depth language specific linguistic knowledge
  897.    is used to convert the input text into phonetic transcription, to
  898.    perform a lexical and syntactical analysis and to create proper
  899.    prosodic contours.

  901. Compatibility
  902.  
  903. o  The IBM CallPath DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1 Node Manager, both
  904.    Interactive and Batch, does not provide management for previous
  905.    versions of DirectTalk/2, but will report the status of a node
  906.    from a previous version.
  907. o  Previous versions of DirectTalk/2 Node Manager, both Interactive
  908.    and Batch, cannot manage IBM CallPath DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1
  909. o  Any DirectTalk/2 applications written for Version 2.01 or 2.0,
  910.    using only system-supplied user actions, will run with no changes
  911.    required.
  912. o  Installation of DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1 with existing Dialogic
  913.    Voice Communication Kits or Voice Recognition Kits requires that
  914.    new Dialogic device drivers contained in the DirectTalk/2
  915.    Version 2.1 package be installed prior to DirectTalk/2 Version 2.1
  916.    installation.

  918. Limitations
  919.  
  920. o  Antares VR support cannot coexist with any other Dialogic VR
  921.    product (for example, VR/160).
  922. o  DirectTalk/2 V2.1 does not support cut-through on continuous
  923.    vocabularies with the Antares board.
  924. o  OS/2 V2.11 is not supported.
  925. o  TTS support on the Antares card can only support one language per
  926.    board.  If more that one language is required, 2 Antares boards
  927.    must be installed.
  928. o  Berkley TTS is not supported with the Aculab card.
  929. o  Voice Recognition, line size, Text-to-Speech, and host
  930.    communication features are limited by the available personal
  931.    computer slots.  Customers should ensure configurations can be
  932.    supported by the number of available ISA PC slots.

  997. consulting services based on the CallPath DirectTalk product line.
  998. To further enhance the product line, IBM and IBM Business Partners
  999. have integrated voice processing applications and application
  1000. development offerings.  Taking advantage of DirectTalk/2's
  1001. open-system design, several IBM business partners support
  1002. DirectTalk/2 and have provided turn-key solutions including
  1003. facsimile, pager, computer help desk, order entry, employee benefits,
  1004. and banking applications.

  1011. For customers with critical applications, a spare unit should be
  1012. considered.  The recommended method is to have two units to serve the
  1013. application.  For example, if 16 lines are required, two 8 line
  1014. systems can be installed.

  1016. When choosing DirectTalk/2, you must consider both hardware and
  1017. software requirements.  DirectTalk/2 operates on the IBM Personal
  1018. Computer 486DX or higher processor with the appropriate memory and
  1019. fixed-disk requirements.  The system can run as a stand-alone system
  1020. or in connection with a host computer, which may be an IBM AS/400, an
  1021. IBM S/390(R), or an ASCII host via TCP/IP connection.
  1022.  
  1023. The open interface also provides you with the opportunity to connect
  1024. to non-IBM hosts and perform host connectivity via APPC.  However,
  1025. these features require that the customer write C language code and
  1026. utilize the open APIs of DirectTalk/2.
  1027.  
  1028. DirectTalk/2 can operate as a stand-alone system or communicate with
  1029. a host computer (S/390 or AS/400) via terminal emulation or APPC.
  1030.

  1034. Customer Responsibilities:  The customer is responsible for
  1035. installation and development of the voice applications.  The customer
  1036. can also request these services through the local IBM office, IBM
  1037. CallPath Solutions Marketing, as well as through one of the IBM
  1038. Business Partners available that are trained in voice application
  1039. solutions.  DirectTalk/2 is a system that provides an environment for
  1040. easy to develop, customizable voice processing applications.

  1042. o  Site Planning: When preparing for the installation of
  1043.    DirectTalk/2, you need to consider a number of requirements
  1044.    relating to the DirectTalk/2 voice processing system, such as:

  1295. required.  Proof of entitlement certificate will be provided with
