DESCRIPTION
To meet today's need for software that is easy to install, use, and
operate while working with existing systems, IBM has taken proven
software technology and enhanced it with additional function,
integrated packaging, and simpler terms and conditions.
TME 10 NetFinity Server Key Functions
o SystemView for OS/2 Version 1.1, including DiskCamera and CID Prep
enhancements, and TME 10 NetFinity Version 4.0 integration
The current SystemView for OS/2 Version 1.1 and TME 10 NetFinity
Version 4.0 clients are supported by the new TME 10 NetFinity
Server manager. Once migrated to the TME 10 NetFinity Server
manager, clients can be updated using the software distribution
function.
o Software Distribution connection to AIX and MVS
The connect capability provides distribution from MVS or AIX to
LANs managed by TME 10 NetFinity Server. Distributed LANs,
managed by TME 10 NetFinity Server, are connected over a SNA
backbone to an MVS host or over TCP/IP to an AIX host for software
distribution.
NetView(R) DM for MVS, or Software Distribution for AIX is
required at the MVS or AIX site. One or more administrators
responsible for the software distribution must reside at the MVS
or AIX site and work with the NetView DM for MVS, or Software
Distribution for AIX User Interface.
o Exporting of data such as hardware and software inventory
information and alerts to a database, either DB2/2(TM) or Lotus
Notes
o Forwarding of NetFinity topology and status information to NetView
for AIX
o SmartGuide
The APPC Configuration SmartGuide for TME 10 NetFinity Server
provides a smart way to configure an APPC link between the
software distribution server and the NetView DM for MVS system.
Configuring APPC communications involves setting values for
parameters used concurrently by different communications
interfaces. The APPC Configuration SmartGuide saves users the
trouble of having to enter the same name or value more than once.
The user enters the required value, and the tool takes care of
placing it where it is needed.
o SystemView license use administration for OS/2 integration
This tool provides network/license administrators with the
functions to monitor the license use compliance of the
applications installed in their networks. The following
use-management functions are included:
- Metering of non-license-enabled applications (metered
applications)
- Ability to set the policy for metered applications
- Ability to simultaneously manage and gather information from
all license use management OS/2 servers
- Graphical and command line for systems administration
- Enhanced reporting
o Management of LANs through the World Wide Web
A remote manager function enables management of TME 10 NetFinity
Server systems over an Internet connection.
o AntiVirus/2 (AV/2) integration
This function provides comprehensive anti-virus protection for
personal computer environments. AV/2 can perform the following
functions:
- Scan a set of files (a drive, a directory, all files with a
certain extension, a diskette) or the memory and verify the
presence of a virus
- Log the results of the scan in different formats (short, long,
verbose)
- Disinfect the files infected
Upgrade service is available.
o Client support
- OS/2
- Windows 3.1
- Windows 3.11 and Windows for Workgroups
- Windows 95
- Windows NT
- NetWare (TME 10 NetFinity functions)
o RAID enhancements
RAID enhancements allow remote configuration of RAID arrays inside
a server or an external RAID enclosure. This includes
configuration of "hot spare" disks, taking disks on and off line,
and rebuilding arrays after failure.
o Support of NetManage Chameleon TCP/IP Windows stack
o Coexistence of the new manager of the TME 10 NetFinity Server with
clients of SystemView for OS/2 Version 1.1 or SystemView for OS/2
bundled in Warp Server Version 4.0
o Migration for SystemView for OS/2 Version 1.1 and SystemView for
OS/2 in Warp Server Version 4.0, and from NetFinity Version 3.0
and TME 10 NetFinity Version 4.0 to the TME 10 NetFinity Server

copies of the programs.
If the product is ordered, customers can continue to use it by
downloading from the CD-ROM and installing the production licenses.
Not all of the product must be installed, only the production
licenses. In practice, only two files must be copied.
A copy of this trial code will also be available on the Internet
(http://www.tivoli.com) starting on the general availability date.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
IBM offers several products for the OS/2 environment that provide
similar function to TME 10 NetFinity Server 4.0 and allow customers
to manage multivendor servers, desktops, and networks. These
products include:
o NetFinity and TME 10 NetFinity
o SystemView for OS/2 in Warp Server Version 4.0
o Distributed Console Access Facility (DCAF) (now, TME 10 Remote
Control)
o NetView Distribution Manager for OS/2 (NVDM/2) (also available as
part of TME 10 Software Distribution)
o SystemView License Use Management Run-time
NetFinity and TME 10 NetFinity
TME 10 NetFinity is the foundation product for TME 10 NetFinity
Server. It provides asset inventory, proactive PC and Server
monitoring, end user help tools, hardware management, and many other
functions. It is a multiplatform product that can have a management
platform that runs on Windows 3.1, Windows 95, or Windows NT, in
addition to OS/2. The manager component of TME 10 NetFinity Server
runs only on OS/2 and adds full remote control, software
distribution, anti-virus, and license management to the TME 10
NetFinity product. Both of them can have the ability to be accessed
from a Web browser.
TME 10 NetFinity is the entry solution, which we provide on all of
our PC servers and commercial desktops, and some ThinkPads, free of
charge. You can manage NetFinity clients from TME 10 NetFinity
Server.
Customers should select NetFinity rather than TME 10 NetFinity Server
as the manager if they do not need the additional functions of Remote
Workstation Control, AntiVirus, Software Distribution and
Preparation, or License Use Management, or if they need to manage
from a Windows-based environment.
SystemView in Warp Server Version 4.0
SystemView in Warp Server Version 4.0 is the same as the stand-alone
SystemView for OS/2 Version 1.1 product. It is a subset of the
functions provided by TME 10 NetFinity Server Version 4.0, except
that it is based on NetFinity 3.0 (and thus has older hardware
support), does not have enterprise connectivity for software
distribution or status and topology forwarding to AIX, and does not
have AntiVirus integrated or license metering/administration.
Distributed Console Access Facility
The Distributed Console Access Facility (DCAF) is positioned as an
enterprise offering that allows users to take over remote OS/2 and
Windows workstations over TCP/IP, SNA, NetBIOS, and IPX
communications networks, and also offers a third-party authentication
capability. The TME 10 NetFinity Server Remote Console capability is
based on DCAF, but does not support SNA networks or the third-party
authentication capability. It does offer two-party authentication
through the TME 10 NetFinity Server security service.
Customers who require remote console over SNA networks or who could
benefit from the administrative savings available in a third-party
authentication system should continue to purchase DCAF.
Some customers may benefit from the coexistence of DCAF and TME 10
NetFinity Server.
NetView Distribution Manager for OS/2
NetView Distribution Manager for OS/2 (NVDM/2) provides software
distribution for customers with multiple sites. NVDM/2 can
communicate with other members of the NVDM family to provide a
fan-out function that reduces WAN traffic.
The TME 10 NetFinity Server Software Distribution function does not
provide manager to manager function, and so should be considered only
for customers where WAN bandwidth is not a concern, or who have very
few remote sites.
The TME 10 NetFinity Server Software Distribution function might also
be considered as an alternative to NetView Distribution Manager for
NetWare or AIX, since it supports IPX and TCP/IP communications
protocols. This solution will improve performance of NetWare servers
by offloading the software distribution function to an OS/2 server.
It may also provide a lower-cost solution than NetView Distribution
Manager/6000.
SystemView License Use Management Run-time
The License Use Management Run-time component of TME 10 NetFinity
Server is identical to the separately available SystemView License
Use Management Run-time product.
