  48. TeamConnection(TM) for OS/2(R) and Windows+ Version 1.1
  49. (TeamConnection) provides the facility for application developers to
  50. better manage their software development process in a team
  51. environment.
  52.  
  53. TeamConnection provides full application development support,
  54. including software configuration management, information sharing, and
  55. application build/deployment for OS/2.  TeamConnection functions for
  56. software configuration management (SCM) are now available through a
  57. GUI on Windows NT, Windows 95, and DOS/Windows 3.1 for access to
  58. TeamConnection servers on OS/2.  Automated build support is now also
  59. provided on Windows NT, in addition to OS/2 and MVS(R).

  61. To facilitate integration with a wider range of tools, TeamConnection
  62. offers TeamConnection Exchange for OS/2.  TeamConnection Exchange
  63. provides a bridge to many popular application development tool
  64. repositories and encyclopedias for sharing information.
  65. TeamConnection also provides open support for using IBM and third
  66. party development tools with TeamConnection's functions for software
  67. configuration management.

  70. software configuration management services and object-oriented

  74. As part of IBM's effort to support current users of IBM's
  75. Configuration Management Version Control (CMVC), IBM will offer an
  76. upgrade from CMVC Version 2 to TeamConnection for OS/2 and Windows
  77. Version 1.1.  Specifically, current users of CMVC on OS/2 and
  78. DOS/Windows 3.1 can purchase TeamConnection at an upgrade price.
  79. When TeamConnection becomes available for UNIX(1) platforms, IBM
  80. intends to offer data migration services from CMVC Version 2 to
  81. TeamConnection.  IBM intends to extend the upgrade pricing for
  82. current CMVC users to include future releases of TeamConnection on
  83. UNIX.

  103. DESCRIPTION
  104.  
  105. TeamConnection for OS/2 and Windows Version 1.1
  106.  
  107. TeamConnection integrates software configuration management services
  108. and object-oriented information sharing services.  This is provided
  109. on a semantic model for tool integration to support application
  110. development in a distributed team development environment.  This
  111. unique combination of functionality allows the benefits of SCM
  112. services to be provided across the broad spectrum of development data
  113. stored by TeamConnection, including both file-based objects and fine
  114. grain modeled objects.
  115.  
  116. TeamConnection provides full application development support,
  117. including software configuration management, information sharing, and
  118. application build/deployment on OS/2.  TeamConnection functions for
  119. software configuration management are also available through a GUI on
  120. Windows NT, Windows 95, and DOS/Windows 3.1 for access to
  121. TeamConnection servers on OS/2.
  122.  
  123. An open, extendable information model provides the vehicle for data
  124. sharing between a set of integrated tools using TeamConnection.  The
  125. object-oriented information model enables an extensible architecture,
  126. ensuring continued support for new versions of existing tools, as
  127. well as new tools that are brought into the information sharing
  128. framework.  With TeamConnection Exchange, information from many
  129. popular application development tool repositories and encyclopedias
  130. can be imported or exported and shared with tools enabled to
  131. TeamConnection's information model.
  132.  
  133. TeamConnection supports the development of applications that can be
  134. targeted for many IBM and non-IBM platforms.  TeamConnection provides
  135. integrated build support for applications being targeted for the
  136. OS/2, Windows NT, and MVS platforms.  Builds of applications for
  137. other target platforms can be accomplished through standard "make"
  138. facilities on the target platform.
  139.  
  140. TeamConnection provides the following SCM services:
  141.  
  142. o  Version Control
  143.  
  144.    Version Control provides the basic function of an SCM tool.  It
  145.    stores versions of an entire application so that the state of the
  146.    application at a particular point in time can be re-created.
  147.    Version Control supports both serial and parallel development and
  148.    includes a graphical merge tool for reconciling text changes.
  149.  
  150. o  Configuration Management
  151.  
  152.    Configuration Management provides the ability to identify,
  153.    organize, manage, and control access to development data.  It also
  154.    provides a notification mechanism to facilitate team
  155.    communications.
  156.  
  157. o  Integrated Build
  158.  
  159.    Integrated Build automates and optimizes the process of building
  160.    an application or part of an application.  Building can encompass
  161.    many different processes such as compiling, linking, generating,
  162.    document processing, binding an application to a database, or
  163.    invoking a command file.  The build process can segment the build
  164.    activity so that multiple build processors can be used in parallel
  165.    to complete the build faster.  It coordinates and controls these
  166.    multiple build tasks.  Integrated build also automatically
  167.    determines include dependencies, checks for a minimal set of
  168.    objects to rebuild, and then builds the application.  The build
  169.    process encompasses building applications for local or remote
  170.    systems and building applications that run in multiple
  171.    environments.

  173. o  Packaging and Distribution Support
  174.  
  175.    Packaging and Distribution Support extends the conventional
  176.    compile and link steps of the build function to perform
  177.    transformation steps.  These steps are required to prepare the
  178.    application for distribution to a production environment.  The
  179.    packaging and distribution support enables applications to be
  180.    distributed electronically using LAN-based file server technology
  181.    such as NetView(R) Distribution Manager/2.
  182.  
  183. o  Problem Tracking and Change Control
  184.  
  185.    Problem Tracking and Change Control manages the process of
  186.    allowing changes to development data.  TeamConnection provides a
  187.    very strong configurable development model that controls and
  188.    tracks changes to development data.  It associates identified
  189.    application defects and features with the changes.  TeamConnection
  190.    manages the process of integrating related changes through the
  191.    ability to build the application based on defects and features.
  192.  
  193. o  Backup and Recovery
  194.  
  195.    The Backup and Recovery facility allows TeamConnection data to be
  196.    stored on an alternate media for archival purposes.  Because of
  197.    data consistency, there is no capability to merge the old data
  198.    with new or current data upon restoration.
  199.  
  200. o  SQL Query
  201.  
  202.    SQL Query provides a dynamic query facility for development data
  203.    and meta data.  Meta data is information about development data.
  204.    Examples include defects, build information, configuration
  205.    information, and registered users.  This query facility provides a
  206.    powerful reporting mechanism for audit purposes, quality control,
  207.    project management, and development needs.
  208.  
  209. TeamConnection also provides an object-oriented information sharing
  210. framework with an open extensible information model.  In addition to
  211. supporting all the SCM services above, the information sharing
  212. framework has the following features:
  213.  
  214. o  Object-Oriented Information Sharing Services
  215.  
  216.    TeamConnection leverages object-oriented database technology and
  217.    services.  This high-performance, distributed, object-oriented
  218.    database stores the persistent data and provides query, locking,
  219.    and transaction functions.
  220.  
  221. o  Information Model
  222.  
  223.    The information model provides the common semantic definition by
  224.    which integrated tools share data and interact.  This provides the
  225.    integrating platform through which development tools work together
  226.    to share data and to allow a team to develop and maintain
  227.    mission-critical applications.
  228.  
  229. o  Information Model Schema Evolution
  230.  
  231.    TeamConnection provides schema evolution facilities that allow the
  232.    information model to be extended without having to recompile
  233.    existing code.  These facilities are used in each new release of
  234.    the information model.  Not having to recompile the tools for
  235.    changes in the information model is important as tools normally
  236.    ship just the executable form of their product.
  237.  
  238. o  Data Constraints
  239.  
  240.    Constraints are methods that ensure that the data is consistent
  241.    with the definition of the information model.  Constraints are
  242.    defined as part of the model definition.  Constraints are useful
  243.    in that tools do not require code to validate data in the model
  244.    prior to use.

  247. Application Development Tool Integration
  248.  
  249. TeamConnection was designed for extensibility and easy integration
  250. and supports the following types of tool integration:

  252. o  TeamConnection Exchange provides a bridge to many popular
  253.    application tools repositories and encyclopedias for sharing
  254.    information.

  256. o  Tools which transform (such as compilers) a set of inputs into a
  257.    set of outputs can be plugged into TeamConnection through the use
  258.    of a build script.

  260. o  Tools can provide transparent access to the software configuration
  261.    management services by invoking the TeamConnection command line
  262.    interface from within their tools.

  264. o  TeamConnection function can be extended by invoking tools from

  270.  
  271. TeamConnection Exchange is a feature of TeamConnection that provides
  272. a bridge to many popular application development tool repositories
  273. and encyclopedias for sharing information through export and import

  303. for build of VisualGen Version 2.0 applications, tables, and map
  304. groups.  The outputs of VisualGen Version 2.0 generation are also
  305. placed under TeamConnection versioning and change control, and are
  306. prepared for execution by the configuration management facilities of
  307. TeamConnection.

  309. VisualAge for COBOL for OS/2:  TeamConnection provides the
  310. infrastructure for team programming and software configuration
  311. management services for VisualAge for COBOL for OS/2.  In addition to
  312. the standard integration points, storage and control of COBOL files,
  313. and building COBOL executables, TeamConnection is integrated with the
  314. Workframe component of VisualAge for COBOL for OS/2.  Files stored in
  315. TeamConnection can be reflected in Workframe projects and
  316. TeamConnection actions can be invoked from the Workframe project.
  317. With TeamConnection's ability to build applications for MVS, the IBM
  318. COBOL for MVS compiler can also be used as a build tool with
  319. TeamConnection.

  321. VisualAge for C++ for OS/2:  TeamConnection provides the
  322. infrastructure for team programming and software configuration
  323. management services for VisualAge for C++ for OS/2.  In addition to
  324. the standard integration points, storage and control of C++ files,
  325. and building C++ executables, TeamConnection is integrated with the
  326. Workframe component of VisualAge for C++ for OS/2.  Files stored in
  327. TeamConnection can be reflected in Workframe projects and
  328. TeamConnection actions can be invoked from the Workframe project.
  329. With TeamConnections's ability to build applications for MVS, the
  330. C/370(TM) for MVS compiler can also be used as a build tool with
  331. TeamConnection.

  333. VisualAge Requirements Tool for OS/2:  The VisualAge Requirements
  334. Tool is a powerful, easy-to-use tool that helps business analysts
  335. specify business-user requirements in terms business users can
  336. understand.  The VisualAge Requirements Tool helps analysts depict,
  337. evaluate, and communicate the requirements of business operations so
  338. executives can exercise enterprise-level control over their
  339. companies.

  341. The VisualAge Requirements Tool lets the analysts work interactively,
  342. in real time, to rapidly model current business operations, proposed
  343. changes, and to stay abreast of changes in the business.

  345. The VisualAge Requirements Tool is integrated with VisualGen for
  346. OS/2 through TeamConnection.

  348. TeamConnection DataAtlas for OS/2:  TeamConnection DataAtlas for
  349. OS/2 provides data modeling, database design, and data dictionary
  350. function in a single, LAN-based tool set.  The TeamConnection
  351. DataAtlas Modeler provides the capability to define and manage an
  352. entity-relationship model of your corporation's data.  It also
  353. transforms this conceptual data model into a physical model.  The
  354. TeamConnection DataAtlas Designer provides assistance in producing an
  355. optimized physical database design from your conceptual model.  The
  356. TeamConnection DataAtlas Dictionary manages your relational and
  357. hierarchical database definitions for IBM's premier databases,

  750. o  Depending on hardware/software configurations a TeamConnection
  751.    server can support up to 200 clients.

  753.    Mechanisms are available to implement external synchronizations of
  754.    multiple TeamConnection servers for larger groups.

  756. o  Multiple TeamConnection daemons can be started against the
  757.    TeamConnection database, to service requests from clients.

  759.    -  For servicing tools that use the information model, one
  760.       TeamConnection daemon should be started for every 10 active
  761.       clients.

  763.    -  For servicing SCM requests, the need for multiple daemons will
  764.       be driven by process-intensive requests such as query.

  766. o  Any number of build servers, where compiles and generates execute,
  767.    can be started against the TeamConnection server.  These can be on
