  36. IBM ImagePlus(R) Intelligent Forms Facility/2 (IPFO) Version 1
  37. Release 2 provides a significant enhancement to improve productivity
  38. and reduce the cost of data entry.  IPFO Version 1.2 provides new
  39. hand-printed character recognition through optical character
  40. recognition (OCR) Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) technology
  41. for customers who scan forms with typed, machine-printed, or
  42. handprinted data for storage in their host ImagePlus for OS/400(R),
  43. ImagePlus for MVS/ESA(TM), and ImagePlus VisualInfo(TM) systems.
  44. IPFO Version 1.2 provides support for ImagePlus OS/400, ImagePlus
  45. MVS/ESA, and ImagePlus VisualInfo environments.
  46.  
  47. IPFO provides the automatic recognition of scanned forms and specific
  48. user-defined fields to be processed, separates field data from the
  49. background content of the form (field extraction), and includes
  50. optical character recognition of the extracted data.  The results are
  51. then returned to the ImagePlus Workstation Program/2 workstation for
  52. indexing and storing in the ImagePlus system.  If there are typed or
  53. handwritten characters in the fields not recognized by IPFO
  54. (including unrecognized, suspicious, or misrepresented characters),
  55. the image and data may be passed to the optional IBM ImagePlus
  56. Intelligent Forms Assist/2 (IPFA) feature of IPFO for the OCR-reject
  57. correction capability.

  59. IPFA enables a user to simultaneously view the original image, along
  60. with the recognition results, and manually correct the data.  Manual
  61. techniques are reserved for error correction or verification of the
  62. data following forms processing and OCR.  IPFA is designed to
  63. increase overall throughput and accuracy of data captured and
  64. documents indexed for storage in ImagePlus systems.

  76. DESCRIPTION
  77.  
  78. IPFO provides ImagePlus customers with an alternative to entering
  79. data manually from scanned forms by automatically analyzing a scanned
  80. form to determine its form type, extracting the relevant information
  81. fields (based on previously stored field specifications), performing
  82. OCR on the fields, and returning the data and exception results to
  83. the IWPM/2 workstation.  IPFO is designed to enable you to process
  84. scanned form images easily and extract the relevant information to
  85. index the images for storage and retrieval on ImagePlus systems.
  86.  
  87. User Productivity
  88.  
  89. IPFO is a tool to restructure the people-intensive process of manual
  90. key entry performed when indexing and capturing data from scanned
  91. images.  Intelligent forms recognition performs an analysis of line
  92. patterns, or a barcode, to identify the form types and extracts the
  93. information needed to automate document indexing.  Automated analysis
  94. and identification of form images during the scan process can help
  95. reduce the labor and expense of presorting the forms before scanning.
  96. Key entry is eliminated for a large portion of the data capture
  97. process by using optical character recognition on the fields
  98. extracted from the form images.
  99.  
  100. Overall productivity may be improved by automatically capturing data
  101. from the scanned forms, limiting manual key-data entry to the process
  102. of correcting unrecognized characters.  Data entry personnel can now
  103. focus on forms rejection or exceptions generated by badly written
  104. data, unrecognizable fonts, or poor quality images.  IPFO is now able
  105. to recognize handwritten characters, further reducing the amount of
  106. manual exception work you need to do.
  107.  
  108. Additional enhancements to productivity are provided through the IPFA
  109. feature.  This feature enables data entry personnel to correct
  110. unrecognized characters by presenting the image and data on the
  111. screen concurrently.  They are able to match the fields on the image
  112. with the data to be entered or corrected.
  113.  
  114. Growth Enablement
  115.  
  116. IPFO and the IPFA feature are designed to run on the IWPM/2
  117. Version 1.2 (or later) workstation.  This enables you to add forms
  118. processing and OCR to ImagePlus Workstation Program/2 workstations as
  119. capacity requirements increase.  As new applications are developed,
  120. additional form types can be added through use of the Forms
  121. Definition Utility.

  123. Investment Protection
  124.  
  125. IPFO provides the Forms Definition Utility (FDU) to customize the
  126. recognition and processing of forms.  FDU enables IPFO to work with
  127. your existing stock of forms.  This may reduce the expense of
  128. redesigning and printing new forms, or reduce the difficulty of
  129. negotiating new form designs.
  130.  
  131. IPFO functions are compatible across IBM ImagePlus MVS/ESA, ImagePlus
  132. OS/400, and ImagePlus VisualInfo platforms.  The product may be
  133. substituted for existing, or planned, manual data-entry skills.  As
  134. an image application service function, IPFO can be readily integrated
  135. into ImagePlus systems (MVS/ESA and OS/400 and VisualInfo).

  142. TECHNICAL INFORMATION
  143.  
  144. Hardware Requirements
  145.  
  146. o  The minimum processor will support OS/2(R) Version 3 or later,
  147.    IWPM/2 Version 1.2 or later, and has at least 20MB of free storage
  148.    on its hard disk after the installation of required software.  The
  149.    recommended processor is a PS/2(R) Model 8590-0J9, or higher, with
  150.    enough hard disk capacity to store images of all the unique forms
  151.    that must be recognized.

  153.    The Intelligent Character Recognition functions, which perform the
  154.    handwriting character and multiple font recognition, require an
  155.    IBM PS/2, PS/1(R) or ValuePoint(TM) (or compatible).
  156.  
  157. o  Displays -- Any display supported by IWPM/2 Version 1.2 or later
  158.    for SBCS support
  159.  
  160. o  RAM Memory -- 16MB minimum
  161.  
  162. o  Communications Adapter -- any communications network adapter (such
  163.    as the IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter/A Card) that is
  164.    supported by the Advanced Program-to-Program Communications (APPC)
  165.    facility of the IBM Communications Manager/2
  166.  
  167. o  Scanners -- Any scanner supported by IWPM/2 Version 1.2 or later.
  168.    Scanners with automatic document feed, for example, the IBM 2456
  169.    Image Scanner (2546-001) or Kodak ImageLink Scanner 900 (1) are
  170.    recommended to reduce image skewing
  171.  
  172. o  IBM Mouse -- Pointing Device (optional but recommended)
  173.  
  174. Note: FDU supports any display attached via a VGA or 8514/A adapter.
  175. FDU will also run on any Image Adapter/A-supported display, since the
  176. Image Adapter/A provides compatibility with VGA and 8514/A display
  177. modes.
  178.  
  179. The IPFA feature is installed on an IPFO workstation, and has the
  180. following additional hardware requirements:
  181.  
  182. o  At least 10MB additional free storage.  The recommended processor
  183.    is a PS/2 Model 8556-059, or higher.
  184.  
  185. Software Requirements:  IPFO Version 1.2 runs on an IWPM/2
  186. Version 1.2 or later workstation, and has the following additional
  187. software prerequisites:
  188.  
  189. o  OS/2 Version 3.0 or later
  190.  
  191. o  Communications Manager/2 Version 1.1.1 or later
  192.  
  193. o  OS/2 LAN Requester Version 4.0 or later
  194.  
  195. o  DB2(R) for OS/2 Version 2.1 Single-User (41H-2112) or later
  196.  
  197. o  When attached to the IBM ImagePlus OS/400 platform, the following
  198.    must be installed:
  199.  
  200.    -  IBM ImagePlus Workfolder Application Facility/400 Version 2.4
  201.       and its prerequisites must be installed on the ImagePlus
  202.       WAF/400 host platform (see Software Announcement 294-063, dated
  203.       February 15, 1994, for details).
  204.  
  205. o  When attached to the IBM ImagePlus MVS/ESA platform, the following
  206.    must be installed:
  207.  
  208.    -  The client portion of DB/2 Version 2.1 or later
  209.  
  210.    -  IBM ImagePlus Object Distribution Manager Version 2.2 (see
  211.       Software Announcement 292-606, dated October 20, 1992, for
  212.       details).
  213.  
  214.    -  IBM ImagePlus Capture Facility/2 Version 1, or later, and its
  215.       prerequisites, including IBM OS/2 LAN Server Version 4.0, or
  216.       later -- Entry (5871-AAA), must be installed on a LAN attached
  217.       to the ImagePlus MVS/ESA platform (see Software Announcement
  218.       296-170, dated May 21, 1996).

  220. Note: Either the Entry or Advanced version of LAN Server may be used.

  222. ORDERING INFORMATION

  224. Current Licensees
  225.  
  226. Current licensees of IPFO Version 1 Release 1 will be sent a program
  227. reorder form which may be returned directly to IBM Software
  228. Manufacturing Solutions (SMS) to activate an order for Release 2.
  229. The mailing of the reorder forms will be completed by June 7, 1996.
  230. Reorder forms returned to SMS will be processed within 10 working
  231. days of receipt.

  236. on the planned availability date.  Orders entered after the planned
