  40. The Data Collection Connection (DCConnect) Development Toolkit and
  41. Server products for OS/2(R) and for Windows+ NT are IBM's next
  42. generation of data collection enablers.  They provide an improved
  43. user interface, additional function, and a pricing structure that
  44. accommodates smaller businesses and installations.
  45.  
  46. The Data Collection Connection Development Toolkit is an
  47. object-oriented development tool for creating transaction programs
  48. for IBM data collection terminals.  It features an object-oriented
  49. drag-and-drop GUI enabling ease-of-use, supports IBM's 7525, 7526,
  50. 7527, and 7524 data collection terminals.  The Development Toolkit
  51. also includes server support for one terminal.
  52.  
  53. The Data Collection Connection Server provides a graphical facility
  54. for defining a data collection terminal network and utilities for
  55. managing and monitoring those terminals.  The network is depicted on
  56. the PC as a series of interconnected icons making configuration and
  57. monitoring more user-friendly.  This product can be purchased in any
  58. of three tiers depending on the number of terminals required for a
  59. particular installation.
  60.  
  61. Terminal Services for DOS and Windows lets a PC running DOS or
  62. Windows interact with the DCConnect server as a data collection
  63. device.  It provides a set of APIs that can be invoked from a Visual
  64. Basic or C language program to interact with the DCConnect network.
  65.  
  66. HostConnect for MAPICS(R) provides a turnkey solution for MAPICS/XA
  67. customers with Plant Monitoring and Control (PM&C) installed.
  68. HostConnect for MAPICS is a set of DCConnect transaction programs and
  69. Advanced Host Interactive Screen Support (AHISS) scripts that collect
  70. PM&C transactions and forwards them to the MAPICS system running on
  71. an AS/400(R) via the OS/2 Communications Manager 5250 emulator.
  72. HostConnect for MAPICS provides function similar to the MAPICS
  73. interface portion of Data Collection Control/2 (DCC/2) and the 5250
  74. and MAPICS Data Services for DOS product.

  99. DESCRIPTION
  100.  
  101. Data Collection Connection
  102.  
  103. DCConnect is a PC-based data collection system that provides an easy
  104. method for collecting data from IBM fixed and portable data
  105. collection terminals.  Information related to inventory, labor
  106. tracking, work orders, time and attendance, product quality, and
  107. other data required for day-to-day operations and historical tracking
  108. of a business can be gathered at the source as it occurs.  This data
  109. is then fed to databases on the PC or Enterprise Resource Planning
  110. (ERP) system residing on a host computer.
  111.  
  112. By providing an integrated set of products that work together "right
  113. out of the box", implementation time is significantly reduced.  MIS
  114. or supervisory personnel can quickly program the data collection
  115. terminals and integrate the DCConnect system with their host
  116. application.
  117.  
  118. All products are national language support (NLS)- and double-byte
  119. character set (DBCS)-enabled.
  120.  
  121. Data Collection Connection Development Toolkit
  122.  
  123. The DCConnect Development Toolkit and DCConnect are follow-on
  124. products to IBM DCC/2, which supports DCC/2 API structure and
  125. devices.  Customer-written DCC/2 applications will work unmodified
  126. with DCConnect.  DCC/2 32-bit transaction programs can be migrated to
  127. work with the DCConnect Toolkit.
  128.  
  129. Your investment in IBM data collection terminals and DCC/2 custom
  130. programs is protected by the architecture of DCConnect.  Support for
  131. the API structure ensures products such as IBM's Integration Tools,
  132. Advanced Host Interactive Screen Support for OS/2  (AHISS), and
  133. Database Interactive Transaction Support for OS/2 (DBITS), will
  134. continue to work with DCConnect.
  135.  
  136. Data Collection Connection Server
  137.  
  138. The tiered structure of the DCConnect Server system accommodates
  139. small installations where a systems integrator or your primary MIS
  140. facility creates the transaction programs using the DCConnect
  141. Toolkit.  These transaction programs can then be used at any number
  142. of sites that have one of the DCConnect Server systems installed.
  143.  
  144. This structure provides for a lower-cost installation where small
  145. remote facilities that require only a few terminals can run a
  146. low-tier DCConnect Server on a local PC.  This lowers the overall
  147. cost of the data collection installation.
  148.  
  149. Terminal Services
  150.  
  151. Terminal Services for DOS and Windows enables you to incorporate DOS
  152. and Windows PCs into your data collection network.  By creating
  153. custom data collection applications using the supplied APIs and
  154. libraries, you have complete control over the user interface,
  155. validation routines, and any other PC-based functions, such as
  156. printing and communications.
  157.  
  158. The APIs provided allow the Visual Basic or C program to send
  159. transactions and request validation of data to the DCConnect server
  160. and allow messages to be sent to programs running on the DCConnect
  161. server.
  162.  
  163. HostConnect for MAPICS
  164.  
  165. HostConnect for MAPICS provides a quick path for shop floor data
  166. collection for MAPICS/XA PM&C users.  A minimal amount of
  167. configuration must be performed prior to starting HostConnect for
  168. MAPICS, minimizing implementation time.  By collecting PM&C
  169. transactions using fixed and portable data collection terminals
  170. (DCTs), data is reflected in the MAPICS system almost immediately,
  171. providing production control and inventory personnel and other key
  172. decision makers the information needed to make day-to-day decisions.
  173.  
  174. PRODUCT POSITIONING
  175.  
  176. DCConnect is a set of follow-on products to DCC/2.  It provides price
  177. advantages over DCC/2 by providing a tiered structure.
  178.  
  179. DCConnect employs an object-oriented programming structure with an
  180. easy-to-learn-and-use GUI and is packaged in a way that lets you
  181. purchase only the products needed for any particular installation.
  182.  
  183. DCConnect is primarily for manufacturers and distribution warehouses
  184. where the use of fixed and portable data collection terminals is
  185. required for tracking materials, labor, and quality, but may be
  186. useful in any business where high volumes of data are collected on a
  187. daily basis and require an easy-to-use interface for data entry.
  188. DCTs outfitted with barcode or magnetic stripe scanners provide
  189. accurate input at a very high rate.
  190.  
  191. STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION
  192.  
  193. IBM intends to continue to enhance its data collection software
  194. offerings with support for other operating system platforms, support
  195. for non-IBM databases, and turn-key solutions for host-based MRP/ERP
  196. applications.  IBM will continue to protect customer investment in
  197. data collection technology with support for existing IBM DCT hardware
  198. and software and by providing a migration path for DCC/2 systems.
  199.  
  200. EDUCATION SUPPORT
  201.  
  202. Education is provided for IBM Business Partners or customers, on
  203. demand, for a fee.  There are no scheduled classes provided on an
  204. ongoing basis.  Customized education for implementation teams and end
  205. users may be provided as part of a custom contract and delivered by
  206. the Worldwide Production Solutions -- Solution Delivery organization.

  284. Compatibility:  DCConnect is compatible with DCC/2 Release 1.10
  285. application programs and 32-bit transaction programs.  When migrating
  286. from DCC/2, any 16-bit transaction programs must first be migrated to
  287. the 32-bit format using the facility provided in DCC/2 1.10.  Other
  288. configuration parameters such as cluster definitions and jobs must be
  289. re-entered in DCConnect.
  290.  
  291. Limitations:  The AHISS and DBITS data collection tools do not run in
  292. a Windows environment and are not supported with the Windows NT
  293. versions of DCConnect.
  294.  
  295. DCConnect supports up to 256 data collection terminals, in any mix of
  296. 7525, 7524, 7526, 7527, and PCs running Terminal Services.  Use of
  297. the 7524 RF portable DCTs also requires 7524 Interface Support for
  298. OS/2 (5696-977).  The 7524 batch portable terminals do not require
  299. 7524 Interface Support for OS/2.
  300.  
  301. Performance Considerations:  Performance of the DCConnect system is
  302. highly dependent on the PC processor speed, the number of terminals
  303. attached, whether or not they are attached via an ARTIC adapter or to
  304. a PC communications port, and other applications running on the
  305. DCConnect PC.  When terminals are attached via the ARTIC adapter in
  306. an OS/2 environment, ARTIC offloads the PC processor and manages the
  307. communications overhead, increasing the performance of the data
  308. collection system and other PC applications running on the same
  309. machine.
  310.  
  311. Planning Information
  312.  
  313. Packaging:  Each DCConnect product will be provided on high-capacity,
  314. 3.5-inch diskettes.  Included with each program package is a basic
  315. installation and configuration guide.  Extensive online help and
  316. softcopy reference information is provided on the installation
  317. diskettes.
  318.  
  319. Security, Auditability, and Control
  320.  
  321. The security and auditability features of the announced programs are
  322. a multi-user security system that is password-protected.  Users will
  323. be required to enter their personal password for access, and their
  324. permitted operations will depend on the assigned class.
  325.  
  326. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
  327. implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
  328. appropriate controls in application systems and communication
  329. facilities.
  330.
