----------------------------------------
SMARTsort is a high-performance sort product that can improve the
execution performance of application programs. SMARTsort for OS/2(R)
can sort data up to 2.8 times faster than the OS/2 3.0 Sort command.
SMARTsort can also be invoked by a command by OS/2 users to easily
sort files. It replaces the standard sort capability provided in the
OS/2 product, and offers dramatically improved performance. Directly
on your workstation, SMARTsort has the capability to sort, copy, and
merge files, and has additional functions which make it easy to
manipulate data, filter and restructure data, create sum totals of
fields, and support user-written exits. SMARTsort can check to
determine if input files are already sorted to prevent unnecessary
processing.
Note: More information regarding performance can be found in the
Performance Considerations section.
SMARTsort Release 2 supports programs written in C, C++, COBOL,
FORTRAN and PL/I languages. SMARTsort Release 2 extends your
workstation capability and increases productivity.
All programs which invoke a sort process, and users who need to sort
files on command, can benefit by using SMARTsort.
Planned Availability Date: April 26, 1996

DESCRIPTION
SMARTsort V1.2 provides high performance sort function with an
extensive set of data manipulation functions. If you have been
waiting for a workstation SORT product that is easy to use and has
great performance, then SMARTsort is for you!
Now your workstation can sort, merge, copy and check data with the
greatest of ease! SMARTsort V1.2 offers the full advantages of
high-performance processing directly on your workstation. Highlights
include:
o Sorting in ascending or descending order
o Restructuring the format of your data
o Filtering input data
o Creating a "running total" for numeric fields
o Culturally correct sorting
SMARTsort V1.2 provides you with general data management capabilities
not available with the OS/2 sort command, at significantly improved
performance. SMARTsort for OS/2 can sort up to 2.8 times faster than
the OS/2 3.0 sort command.
SMARTsort V1.2 supports programs written in C, C++, COBOL, FORTRAN
and PL/I languages. SMARTsort V1.2 extends your workstation
capability and increases productivity.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
SMARTsort is a high-value product that can help speed up jobstreams,
and cut down the processor cycles needed to complete the work. Most
OS/2 systems used by customers do some sort/merge/copy operations,
and SMARTsort can be included in the original order to improve the
performance of these operations at a low cost. Including SMARTsort
with every OS/2 system can improve users' satisfaction with the
applications which run on the system.
Some customers are rightsizing applications from S/370(TM) and
S/390(R) systems to smaller systems. When they do, if they use the
standard sort provided on OS/2, the output sequence will be in ASCII
collating sequence, which is different than the EBCDIC collating
sequence that the application used on the S/370 or S/390. SMARTsort
can be used to make the OS/2 sort step yield the same result as the
S/370 or S/390 sort step. Rightsizing customers are advised to
consider SMARTsort for this capability.
Note: SMARTsort for Workstations V1.2 for OS/2 is the first release
on the OS/2 Operating System.

the Information Presentation Facility (IPF), which allows user to
display softcopy publications). The displayable manual is part of
the basic machine-readable material and is a no-charge feature. The
files are shipped on the same media type as the basic

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Specified Operating Environment
Hardware Requirements: SMARTsort for Workstations V1.2 for OS/2 will
operate on the following:
o IBM compatible 80386, 80486 or Pentium based systems
o 8MB of memory minimum, 16MB or more recommended
One CD-ROM drive and hard disk with at least 1MB free is required to
install the product.
Software Requirements
o OS/2 2.1
o OS/2 Warp 3.0 (or higher)
o SMARTsort's license management requires the SystemView(R) License
Use Management Runtime for OS/2 Program Package. The package can
be obtained for a media charge, or may come as part of some other
offerings. For SMARTsort's use, this runtime requires a
communication protocol. The communications protocol can be
obtained:
o With the operating system, if your package is one of the Warp
Connect versions of OS/2,
o From IBM OS/2 LAN Adapter and Protocol Support Version 2.13, or
later,
o From IBM OS/2 Socket/Multi-Protocol Transport Services
Version 1.00, or later, or
o From TCP/IP Base for OS/2 Version 2.00, or later
Compatibility: SMARTsort provides an alternative to the standard
sort provided with the OS/2 operating system. There are some
differences in syntax between SMARTsort and the standard sort. Some
minor modifications will be necessary in user commands, batch command
files, and REXX execs to invoke SMARTsort for its higher performance
and function.
SMARTsort is designed to work with IBM VisualAge(TM) COBOL. Sort or
Merge verbs in IBM VisualAge COBOL programs will automatically invoke
SMARTsort if SMARTsort is installed on the machine. SMARTsort can
also be invoked as a called program. SMARTsort will not be
automatically invoked by MicroFocus COBOL programs which issue sort
or merge verbs, but SMARTsort can be invoked as a called program from
MicroFocus COBOL programs.
Performance Considerations: The goal of SMARTsort V1.2 is to provide
superior data management function and performance over what is
available with the operating system sort command or competitive data
arrangement products. SMARTsort for OS/2 can sort data up to 2.8
times faster than the OS/2 3.0 sort command.
Disclaimer: The performance information contained in this document
