  39. SMARTsort is a high-performance sort product that can improve the
  40. execution performance of application programs.  SMARTsort for OS/2(R)
  41. can sort data up to 2.8 times faster than the OS/2 3.0 Sort command.
  42. SMARTsort can also be invoked by a command by OS/2 users to easily
  43. sort files.  It replaces the standard sort capability provided in the
  44. OS/2 product, and offers dramatically improved performance.  Directly
  45. on your workstation, SMARTsort has the capability to sort, copy, and
  46. merge files, and has additional functions which make it easy to
  47. manipulate data, filter and restructure data, create sum totals of
  48. fields, and support user-written exits.  SMARTsort can check to
  49. determine if input files are already sorted to prevent unnecessary
  50. processing.

  71. SMARTsort V1.2 provides high performance sort function with an
  72. extensive set of data manipulation functions.  If you have been
  73. waiting for a workstation SORT product that is easy to use and has
  74. great performance, then SMARTsort is for you!

  76. Now your workstation can sort, merge, copy and check data with the
  77. greatest of ease!  SMARTsort V1.2 offers the full advantages of
  78. high-performance processing directly on your workstation.  Highlights

  96. PRODUCT POSITIONING

  98. SMARTsort is a high-value product that can help speed up jobstreams,
  99. and cut down the processor cycles needed to complete the work.  Most
  100. OS/2  systems used by customers do some sort/merge/copy operations,
  101. and SMARTsort can be included in the original order to improve the
  102. performance of these operations at a low cost.  Including SMARTsort
  103. with every OS/2  system can improve users' satisfaction with the
  104. applications which run on the system.

  106. Some customers are rightsizing applications from S/370(TM) and
  107. S/390(R) systems to smaller systems.  When they do, if they use the
  108. standard sort provided on OS/2, the output sequence will be in ASCII
  109. collating sequence, which is different than the EBCDIC collating
  110. sequence that the application used on the S/370 or S/390.  SMARTsort
  111. can be used to make the OS/2 sort step yield the same result as the
  112. S/370 or S/390 sort step.  Rightsizing customers are advised to
  113. consider SMARTsort for this capability.

  115. Note: SMARTsort for Workstations V1.2 for OS/2 is the first release
  116. on the OS/2 Operating System.

  132. Displayable Softcopy Publications:  SMARTsort Guide and Reference for
  133. Workstations is offered in displayable softcopy form in
  134. BookManager(R) and INF.  (INF is a file extension created for use by
  135. the Information Presentation Facility (IPF), which allows user to
  136. display softcopy publications).  The displayable manual is part of
  137. the basic machine-readable material and is a no-charge feature.  The
  138. files are shipped on the same media type as the basic
  139. machine-readable material.

  141. This displayable manual can be used with the BookManager READ
  142. licensed programs in any of the supported environments.  Terms and
  143. conditions for use of the machine-readable files are shipped with the
  144. files.

  146. TECHNICAL INFORMATION

  150. Hardware Requirements:  SMARTsort for Workstations V1.2 for OS/2 will
  151. operate on the following:

  153. o  IBM compatible 80386, 80486 or Pentium based systems
  154.  
  155. o  8MB of memory minimum, 16MB or more recommended
  156.  
  157. One CD-ROM drive and hard disk with at least 1MB free is required to
  158. install the product.

  160. Software Requirements

  162. o  OS/2 2.1

  164. o  OS/2 Warp 3.0 (or higher)

  166. o  SMARTsort's license management requires the SystemView(R) License
  167.    Use Management Runtime for OS/2 Program Package.  The package can
  168.    be obtained for a media charge, or may come as part of some other
  169.    offerings.  For SMARTsort's use, this runtime requires a
  170.    communication protocol.  The communications protocol can be
  171.    obtained:

  173. o  With the operating system, if your package is one of the Warp
  174.    Connect versions of OS/2,
  175.  
  176. o  From IBM OS/2 LAN Adapter and Protocol Support Version 2.13, or
  177.    later,
  178.  
  179. o  From IBM OS/2 Socket/Multi-Protocol Transport Services
  180.    Version 1.00, or later, or
  181.  
  182. o  From TCP/IP Base for OS/2 Version 2.00, or later

  184. Compatibility:  SMARTsort provides an alternative to the standard
  185. sort provided with the OS/2 operating system.  There are some
  186. differences in syntax between SMARTsort and the standard sort.  Some
  187. minor modifications will be necessary in user commands, batch command
  188. files, and REXX execs to invoke SMARTsort for its higher performance
  189. and function.

  191. SMARTsort is designed to work with IBM VisualAge(TM) COBOL.  Sort or
  192. Merge verbs in IBM VisualAge COBOL programs will automatically invoke
  193. SMARTsort if SMARTsort is installed on the machine.  SMARTsort can
  194. also be invoked as a called program.  SMARTsort will not be
  195. automatically invoked by MicroFocus COBOL programs which issue sort
  196. or merge verbs, but SMARTsort can be invoked as a called program from
  197. MicroFocus COBOL programs.

  199. Performance Considerations:  The goal of SMARTsort V1.2 is to provide
  200. superior data management function and performance over what is
  201. available with the operating system sort command or competitive data
  202. arrangement products.  SMARTsort for OS/2 can sort data up to 2.8
  203. times faster than the OS/2 3.0 sort command.

  232. auditability features of the OS/2 operating system and SystemView
