IBM SOFTWARE SERVERS
In the past, the functionality represented in the IBM Software
Servers may have been delivered in over 70 different products. IBM
is now offering that same functionality to our customers in less than
16 server products -- a significant consolidation. The Software
Servers family includes the following categories of servers:
Communications Server: Enables workstations to communicate with
S/390(R) and AS/400(R) hosts and other workstations through a
powerful multiprotocol gateway for SNA and TCP/IP networks. It also
provides Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking(R) (APPN(R)) network node
and end node support.
Database Server: Based on industry-standard SQL relational database
technology, the Database Server is scalable from the LAN database
client/server environment to powerful multiprocessor systems for
businesses requiring large, highly available databases.
Directory and Security Server (DSS): Based on the Open Software
Foundation's (OSF) Distributed Computing Environment (DCE)
Version 1.1, DSS provides the essential directory, time, security,
and remote procedure call (RPC) services needed to support the
growing network-centric enterprise.
Internet Connection Server: Provides a reliable foundation for a
business to build their presence on the Internet. This Web server is
used to host business' home pages, making them accessible on the
external Internet or within their own internal network.
Systems Management Server: Provides the tools necessary to manage
small- to medium-sized workgroups and growing enterprises. The first
Systems Management Server offering is the IBM SystemView Server.
This server also provides functions that allow the LAN resources to
be managed from an enterprise-wide management focal point, such as
SystemView for MVS(R).
Transaction Server: Based on robust, proven CICS(TM) and Encina
technology, the Transaction Server builds upon the services provided
by the other IBM Software Servers to provide a powerful environment
for the development, execution, and management of business-critical
client/server applications.
Lotus Notes: Provides integrated client/server messaging and
business process applications to enable communication with
colleagues, collaboration in teams, and coordination of strategic
business processes. Lotus Notes is also a key component of IBM's
network-centric computing strategy.
When you combine the server software described above with other
software in this family from IBM and Lotus, or with software from
many other suppliers that works with the Software Servers family, you
get an integrated software environment that will support your
applications today and lay the foundation for your applications in
the future.
Operating System Servers
The Software Servers are available on the following base operating
system servers:
o IBM OS/2 Warp Server, Version 4
o IBM OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4
o AIX Version 4.1.4
o Windows NT
These operating system servers are the foundation for the Software
Servers -- providing a choice of platforms on which to build
client/server environments.
The IBM Software Servers for OS/2 Warp have been validated through
IBM integration testing to work together with IBM OS/2 Warp Server,
Version 4. The IBM Software Servers for AIX have been validated
through IBM integration testing to work together with IBM AIX
Version 4.1.4.
The Software Servers support a common installation on OS/2 Warp
Server, Version 4 or AIX Version 4.1.4.
Note: Lotus Notes uses its own installation process.
