DESCRIPTION
Version 2.1 of IBM NetView for OS/2
System policy application can support running commands and the
collection of information from OS/2 workstations. Commands and
monitoring can be tailored to fit your needs and can be scheduled at
specific times.
Improvements in performance, usability, management of Communications
Manager for OS/2 (CM/2), management of DataBase 2 for OS/2 (DB2/2),
and printer management are now included with NetView for OS/2. The
ability to manage these new SNMP agents, from NetView for AIX or
NetView for OS/2, further demonstrates IBM's ability to provide a
scalable set of solutions.
Performance enhancements include reduced use of NetBIOS and OS/2
system resources and increased number of data collections.
Usability improvements include use of multiple protocols by the
agents, pause/resume of the event display, scrolling in performance
grapher display, support of multiple historic logs, and graphical MIB
displays.
In addition to many other improvements, users can now have NetView
for OS/2 automatically detect and restart failed SNA communications
sessions, backup or roll forward DB2(R) databases, page the LAN
Administrator when a printer runs out of paper, use NetFinity(TM)
with NetView for OS/2 from a single interface, and run on IBM's award
winning OS/2 Warp.
IBM LAN NetView Management Utilities for OS/2, included with NetView
for OS/2, has been enhanced to Version 1.2, which includes all prior
customized service diskette upgrades issued over the last 12 months
and basic enhancements.
Following are the specific functional enhancements.
System Policy
The IBM NetView for OS/2 System Policy application provides the
following services:
o File monitoring and collection of various types of file-related
information from LAN-based workstations
o Storage of files and file-related information as changes are
detected; the information collected can consist of:
- Multiple versions of files
- Information about files such as file size, date, and time the
file was last modified
o Command scheduling on remote workstations
o Collection and storage of workstation Vital Product Data (VPD)
information in relational databases or ASCII files
Communications Manager/2 Subagent
o Remotely view, query, and control resources used by the
Communications Manager/2 product
o Dynamically change the designated Communications Manager/2
configuration file
o Provide automation based on operational state changes of the
Communications Manager/2 product and SNA resources, such as PUs
and LUs
o Monitor LU6.2 sessions and dependent LU sessions, such as 3270
emulator sessions
o Monitor the SNA gateway resources and the connectivity between
workstations and host
Database 2 for OS/2 (DB2/2) Subagent
o Remotely view, query, and control the Database 2 for OS/2 (DB2/2)
configuration
o View all the catalogued databases and their configuration
attributes
o View and alter the Database 2 for OS/2 (DB2/2) configuration
attributes
o Remotely manage the databases
o Perform backup, recovery, and roll forward operations; this could
eliminate the need for a database administrator at the remote
location
OS/2 System Information Subagent Enhancements
o All FFST(TM) alerts generated by OS/2 subsystems will be converted
to SNMP Traps. This enables users to automate events through
NetView for OS/2 Event Automation Facility and other SNMP managers
with similar functions.
o Monitor and control spooler queues, printers, and jobs. This
enables an administrator to remotely manage print servers. They
can monitor the jobs and automatically be notified of problems,
such as "printer out of paper".
o Enhancements to Systems Monitor/6000 Version 2 enable the
discovery of OS/2 System Information Agents in addition to AIX
agents.
o Working Set represents the memory used by an application. The
information on the application memory usage can now be collected
and logged. The user or administrator can then analyze the
working set data and determine the extent of memory being used by
the application(s). This information can then be used to
ascertain that enough memory is available for application
execution.
Management Applications
System usage and NetBIOS resources are significantly reduced by all
SNMP-management applications. This will improve response time.
Usability features have been added which should also enhance operator
productivity.
o Event Display has added interface controls such as pause and
resume. Multiple historical event logs will be created.
o SNMP Collector can collect from a significantly greater number of
systems concurrently then was previously available.
o Host Connect can map large SNMP traps to ensure no loss of data.
o SNMP Grapher provides enhanced scrolling flexibility.
o NetView for OS/2 copyright logo now appears only once per day.
o User-defined SNMP subagents are automatically discovered. These
agents can now be displayed as icons at the management desk. This
enables operators to manage any SNMP agent in their enterprise in
addition to NetView for OS/2 agents.
o There is a tool available on the World Wide Web that converts Data
Collector data to ASCII format. The address is:
http://www.raleigh.ibm.com/nv2/nv2prod.html
o The MIB Browser, Data Collector, and Application Builder now
display hierarchical representations of the MIB tree. This gives
users or operators a greater understanding of where they are or
their location within the MIB. Additionally, the following is
also implemented:
- The ability to drag and drop new fonts and colors into the
dialog, with save capability.
- Data collector now supports more summaries. The number of
summaries or systems, nodes per variable name, such as System
Up-time, was 350 and is now greater than a 1000.
o Usability enhancements have been made to the Graphical User
Interface. Total mouse execution capability has been implemented.
This eliminates the need to select an item and then a button to
bring up the item content.
Co-existence
o NetView for OS/2 Version 2.0 is extended to support IBM OS/2 Warp.
o Installation compatibility with MPTS/MPTN (LAN Server 4.0).
o The SNMP agent daemon can be configured to support multiple
concurrent transports, such as IP, NetBIOS, and IPX. This gives
the capability to communicate over alternate protocols if the
primary protocol is not functioning properly.

IBM LAN Management Utilities/6000 Enhancements Version 1.1.4
IBM LAN Management Utilities/6000 is a licensed program that enables
you to manage and monitor the systems of LAN NetView Management
Utilities (LMU) managed Local Area Networks (LANs). Integrating
LMU/6000 with NetView for AIX and/or SystemView(R) for AIX provides
centralized management of your multiprotocol network. This gives you
the ability to monitor and manage IP, IPX, and NetBIOS devices from a
single workstation, with centralized problem determination and event
processing.
LMU/6000 Version 1.1.3 incorporated prior fixes to reported problems
(APARs) covered by IX48854, IX48874, IX47932, IX46973, and IX50216.
This version also gave the capability of running LMU/6000 on NetView
for AIX Version 4.1, as well as Version 3. LMU/6000 Version 1.1.3
continued support for NetView/6000 and NetView for AIX Version 3
running on AIX Version 3.2.5. All of this support is accomplished
with a single image install.
The following enhancements have been made to LMU/6000 Version 1.1.4:
o Alert Management: Alerts sent from LMU for OS/2 can now change
the status of the Managed Station. The ten most current alerts
