IBM Electronic Publishing Edition for OS/2 Version 2.0 Internet Delivery Serves Document Libraries to the World Wide Web
Announced on December 12, 1995
Software Announcement 295503
In Brief . . .
IBM Electronic Publishing Edition for OS/2 Version 2.0 allows you to
dynamically convert documents for viewing by WWW browers. With
Internet delivery of the product, you can:
o Quickly access and install the product via the Internet from a
central location
o Avoid constraints on products due to demand
o Unlock the code via access key obtained from IBM
----------------------------------------
The past several years have seen dramatic growth in the use of the
Internet as a medium for electronic publishing. With IBM Electronic
Publishing Edition for OS/2(R), you can create and serve entire
libraries of documents to your own internal corporate network and to
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) browsers connected to the World Wide
Web (WWW). And by utilizing BookManager(R) READ, these same
documents can be viewed by readers on multiple platforms who are not
connected to an Internet Protocol Network.
The Internet delivery availability of Electronic Publishing Edition
for OS/2 allows for faster and easier delivery of the product to
customers. It avoids constraints on shipments for demand and
provides a fast method to get products to market. Products are
locked using SDCS technology and unlocked via a software key
available from IBM. More information on this process is available in
the Planning Information section of this announcement.
For more information on Electronic Publishing Edition for OS/2
Version 2.0 for the World Wide Web, see Software Announcement
295-321, dated June 27, 1995.

Planning Information
The following is a summary overview of the downloading and unlocking
process:
Product marketing information will be presented on WWW servers
maintained by various product and marketing groups in IBM. This
information will describe features, functions and ordering
information. The WWW page will have a hyperlink that a customer
would press to have EPE for OS/2 V2 delivered via the Internet. This
link will take them to the Product Download WWW Server maintained by
SMS Boulder.
Using the instructions on the Product Download WWW page, the user
unpacks and executes the Electronic Showcase tool to view information
on the product. If the user has not previously run Electronic
Showcase, or CD Showcase on his workstation, they are required to
select the country that they are in. Electronic Showcase then
presents the product information in a language suitable for that
country.
The following product information is presented to the user:
o Ordering information
- General ordering instructions
- Phone numbers for order centers in each country
- Electronic Showcase and product support information
o License Information
- License information document for the product
o Registration Information
- Includes facility to generate Product Registration Number (PRN)
The customer calls the phone number appropriate for his country from
the list in the product information notebook described above.
For the U.S., Canada and EMEA, the customer can directly contact an
order center. The organizations handling ordering and key
fulfillment in these geographies are:
o U.S.: IBM Direct
o Canada: IBM Canada Direct
o EMEA: IBM Direct Services (Copenhagen)
If the customer has already been assigned an IBM customer number,
then the order is entered into the order system, a key is generated
and immediately given to the customer over the phone. For the
customer who does not have an IBM customer number, the customer and
credit card information is taken over the phone. TDO screening must
be done before a key is issued. The TDO screening and key generation
will occur within two hours from the customer's call. The key is
then given to the customer over the phone.
Customers in Latin America countries are instructed to contact their
local IBM representative. The IBM representative enters the order
through their local IBM office system and sends a PROFS note to IBM
Direct Services in Copenhagen to obtain a key. The IBM
representative then delivers the key to the customer.
AP customers are instructed to contact their local IBM
representative. The IBM representative enters the order through the
local IBM office system and requests a key from their local key
center. For AP South keys are generated by ASPD Sydney. AP Japan
keys are generated by ASPD in Japan.
Prior to purchasing a key, the product license agreement is
displayed. The user must accept the license agreement. They then
enter their customer number and key, and click on the Save button to
save the key and unlock the product. Once the key has been saved the
user must press the copy button in Electronic Showcase to copy and
decrypt the product files onto the users hard drive. The product
files consist of a packed file containing the product and a README
file containing instructions on how to install the product.
