BENEFITS FOR CUSTOMERS
Lower the cost of network ownership by automating systems management
tasks. Hardware and software are only a small percentage of your
system costs. SystemView for OS/2 helps reduce expenses associated
with system monitoring, software distribution, trouble shooting,
maintenance, and more.
Reduce end-user downtime and increase end-user productivity with
early warnings of potential problems and capacity bottlenecks and
automate actions to alert you or even resolve problems -- true
proactive management.
Increase end-user satisfaction with improved availability and less
downtime by scheduling changes to run unattended, outside normal work
hours, eliminating the interruptions to the end-user and long hours
by the support staff.
Increase support productivity by assisting and educating end-users
and resolving workstation problems, whether in the office, home, or
hotel room, without leaving your own office.
Drastically reduce time and energy required to inventory workstations
and improve iventory accuracy by letting SystemView for OS/2
automatically discover the workstation hardware and software for you.
Quality inventory and asset management depends on accurate
information gathering. You cannot manage the assets if you are
unaware of them.
Reduce administrative costs of installing and maintaining
applications, operating systems, software, and data by automatically
installing them remotely -- no more sneakernet.
Reduce the total cost of software by buying only the number of
software licenses you actually need.
You can realize these benefits immediately with this integrated,
easy-to-install solution.
EASY-TO-USE SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT APPLICATIONS
o The OS/2 Warp network administrator working at the SystemView for
OS/2 Manager can monitor and manage OS/2 and Windows+ workstations
on a LAN, keep track of hardware and software resources, monitor
their status, and make software available to end users.
o The OS/2 and Windows end user can perform a variety of systems
management functions on the local system in cooperation with the
SystemView for OS/2 Manager.
SystemView for OS/2 operates on a single logical LAN, which may
consist of one LAN or multiple LAN segments connected by routers or
bridges. The configuration may include one SystemView for
OS/2 Manager or multiple SystemView for OS/2 Managers. The supported
protocols are NetBIOS, TCP/IP, IPX, and Serial (Async). Multiple
SystemView for OS/2 Managers may be specialized by task (for example,
remote control of workstations, inventory controller, and software
distribution center), or each one may provide all services to an
assigned set of managed systems.
Functions included in SystemView for OS/2:
o Network Workstation Discovery
Automatically discover networked workstations and organize them
into logical groups to help simplify management tasks.
o Workstation Hardware Inventory
Detect and report detailed information of a wide variety of
systems, including adapters, SCSI devices, disk drives, memory,
I/O devices, and more. Log this data into a flat file, DB/2, or
Lotus** Notes** database.
o Workstation Software Inventory
Discover and collect software information on a system.
o Workstation Monitoring
View statistics on workstation performance, status, threshold
settings, and monitoring activities. Trigger alert from changes
to workstation hardware, Predictive Failure Analysis(TM) of
hardware problems, and other conditions.
o Remote Workstation Control
Control or monitor workstations remotely, view/edit system files,
transfer files, and execute programs.
o Scheduling
Free up your busy system administrator by scheduling events such
as software distribution, system reboot, and inventory during off
hours to minimize disruption, system downtime, and lost user
productivity.
o Security
Control each remote workstation "service" individually by a user
ID and password.
o Alert Manager
Process alerts locally on the workstation where the alert was
generated or centrally at the manager. Automatically execute a
command or script, log the alert, pop up a message, convert the
alert to an SNMP trap, or forward the alert to another manager.
o System Profile
Enter administrative information, such as name of workstation
user, phone number, and department to be entered about each
network workstation.
o License Management
Ensure compliance with software licensing agreement according to
the established company policy.
Provide the means to monitor and control use of license-enabled
(that have been enabled for License Use Management) applications.
o Software Distribution
Distribute and install both CID and non-CID-enabled applications.
CID is an IBM-specified way to install and configure products on,
or remove products from, remote workstations and hosts while
keeping user interactions with the product at a minimum.
o Software Distribution Preparation
Easy-to-use interface for CID response file and packages
preparation.
o Application Sharing
Access information easily on software packages and applications
server.
o License Management Future Enhancement
To exploit the License Management function, IBM announces the beta
test of SystemView License Use Management Administration for OS/2.
License Use Management Administration for OS/2 is a SystemView
function that extends the current ones by:
- Providing a "software metering" client/server function to
monitor use of software products that have not been
license-enabled by the software developer
- Allowing the administrator to simultaneously manage and gather
information from all License Use Management servers
- Supporting Windows clients
IBM will accept candidates for the beta program beginning
December 1, 1995. The beta code will be available from
December 15, 1995, to April 30, 1996, on CD-ROMs and on the IBM
VMTOOLS repository.
Candidates interested in participating in the beta program should
contact Ercole Colonese at IBM Rome NS Laboratory:
Internet: colonese@romeppc.vnet.ibm.com
Telphone: +39-6-59662743
PRODUCT POSITIONING
IBM offers several products for the OS/2 environment that provide
similar function to SystemView for OS/2 and allow customers to manage
multivendor servers, desktops, and networks. These products include:
o Distributed Console Access Facility (DCAF)
o LAN NetView(R) Management Utilities (LMU) for OS/2
o NetFinity(TM)
o NetView Distribution Manager for OS/2 (NVDM/2)
o NetView for OS/2 (NV/2)
o SystemView License Use Management Runtime
Distributed Console Access Facility (DCAF)
The DCAF is positioned as an enterprise offering that allows users to
take over remote OS/2 and Windows workstations over TCP/IP, SNA, and
NetBIOS communications networks, and also offers a third-party
authentication capability. The SystemView for OS/2 Remote Console
capability is based on DCAF but does not support SNA networks or the
third-party authentication capability. It does offer two-party
authentication through the SystemView for OS/2 security service.
Customers who require remote console over SNA networks or who could
benefit from the administrative savings available in a third-party
authentication system should continue to purchase DCAF.
Some customers may benefit from the coexistence of DCAF and
SystemView for OS/2.
LMU for OS/2
LMU for OS/2 is positioned as a low-cost distributed systems manager
with agents that manage IBM LAN Servers Novell** NetWare** Servers,
DOS, OS/2, DOS/Windows, and Macintosh** PCs. LMU provides
operations, performance, configuration, and problem management over
NetBIOS and IPX networks. A GUI and Command Line Interfaces make it
attractive for both attended and unattended solutions. Also, LMU for
OS/2 provides proxy-agents that enable close cooperation with
SystemView for MVS and SystemView for AIX(R). Until these
capabilities are available as enhancements to SystemView for OS/2
(refer to the Statement of Direction section), LMU for OS/2 provides
the best solution for those companies that want to provide
centralized management with SystemView for AIX and SystemView for
MVS. LMU for OS/2 also provides the best solution for those
customers who want to manage DOS or Macintosh PCs.
NetFinity
NetFinity is positioned as a low-cost, highly-flexible hardware and
asset management program with general system management functions.
NetFinity provides a full set of easy-to-use hardware management
services. Its management services make it attractive to a broad
range of LAN environments. NetFinity is primarily a solution to
allow LAN administrators to view, initiate, and automate management
services.
NetFinity Services (software that runs on client systems) are
compatible with SystemView for OS/2. NetFinity Services for NetWare
is currently recommended for SystemView for OS/2 customers who want
to manage NetWare servers. NetFinity 3.05 is recommended for
customers who need to manage Windows 95 clients.
NetFinity manager systems are also compatible with SystemView for
OS/2. So a central SystemView for OS/2 manager can perform
passthrough management to remote NetFinity managers and services
systems.
Customers should select NetFinity rather than SystemView for OS/2 as
the manager if they do not need the additional functions of Remote
Console, Software Distribution and Preparation, or License Use
Management.
NVDM/2
NVDM/2 provides software distribution for customers with multiple
sites. NVDM/2 can communicate with other members of the NVDM family
to provide fan out function that reduces WAN traffic.
SystemView for OS/2 Software Distribution function does not provide
manager-to-manager function and should only be considered for
customers where WAN bandwidth is not a concern or who have very few
remote sites. Refer to the Statement of Direction section for
information about improvements to provide manager-to-manager
enhancements to SystemView for OS/2.
SystemView for OS/2 Software Distribution function might also be
considered as an alternative to NetView Distribution Manager for
NetWare or AIX, since it supports IPX and TCP/IP communications
protocols. This solution improves performance of NetWare Servers by
offloading the software distribution function to an OS/2 server. It
may also provide a lower-cost solution than NVDM/AIX.
NetView for OS/2
NetView for OS/2 is positioned as a low-cost SNMP manager primarily
designed to manage OS/2 and NetWare server environments. It performs
operations, performance, configuration, and problem management for
PC-based LANs using the SNMP management protocol. It also includes
one license to use LMU to manage one NetWare Server, and unlimited
DOS, DOS/Windows, and Macintosh clients using the LMU SNMP proxy
agent capability. Numerous OS/2 sub-agents are provided to manage
OS/2-specific client/server applications, including OS/2, CM/2, LAN
Server, LAN Requester, and DB2/2(TM).
NetView for OS/2 also provides discovery and integration of NetFinity
Services systems. Since SystemView for OS/2 clients are based on
NetFinity Services, this integration will also work with the
SystemView client.
NetView for OS/2 should be considered by customers who desire a
standards-based manager or the extensive ability to manage OS/2
subsystems. It should also be considered by users of SystemView for
OS/2 who need to manage SNMP-based systems like hubs, routers, or
applications with SNMP agents such as databases or Lotus Notes.
SystemView License Use Management Runtime
The License Use Management Runtime component of SystemView for OS/2
is identical to the separately available SystemView License Use
Management Runtime product.
STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION
SystemView for OS/2 will be available in German, French, and Spanish
by February 1996. Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese,
Korean, Brazilian, Italian, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Danish
will be available by the second quarter of 1996.
As SystemView evolves in the OS/2 environment, it will provide
enterprise management and be a domain manager reporting into
SystemView for AIX or SystemView for MVS.
IBM will continue to integrate and extend the systems management
functions, including software distribution and storage management
from other platforms, virus detection, and SNMP management. The
SystemView desktop will be enhanced with a topological view of the
LAN.
All this will give customers the freedom to choose what, where, and
how to manage, quickly adapting to changing business needs.
The announcement and availability of the referenced functions will be
based on IBM's business and technical judgement.
