  83.           COBOL FAMILY OVERVIEW
  84.           Three new COBOL products are available on OS/2, AIX, and MVS & VM,
  85.           breathing new vitality into the business language of choice.  IBM has
  86.           dramatically enhanced COBOL with visual development tools (OS/2),
  87.           object-oriented extensions, and powerful client/server support across
  88.           a wide variety of platforms.
  89.                  The enhancements in IBM VisualAge for COBOL for OS/2 also
  90.           offer exceptional gains in productivity and flexibility.  With
  91.           desktop-based visual development tools, programmers can begin
  92.           applications by creating graphical user interfaces (GUIs).  To put
  93.           substance behind the GUIs, the visual tools and data utility
  94.           functions allow rapid development to create business logic and access
  95.           databases, VSAM files, and transaction-processing systems.
  96.                  With IBM's COBOL Family, COBOL programmers can use their
  97.           expertise to create advanced client/server applications, allowing
  98.           host COBOL applications to move to the desktop, while data remains on

  102.           32-bit direct-to-SOM-based, object-oriented support on the OS/2
  103.           operating system.  In addition, a COBOL application development
  104.           environment is provided that is designed specifically to handle
  105.           client/server, mission-critical, line-of-business applications
  106.           through visual development.  IBM VisualAge for COBOL for OS/2 also
  107.           gives the COBOL programmer a set of high-productivity, OS/2-based
  108.           power tools for the development of applications targeting OS/2

  134.           VISUAL GUI DESIGNER:  The visual GUI designer provides capabilities
  135.           to allow the building of complex CUA (TM)-compliant screens.  The
  136.           visual interface (GUI work screen) that creates the GUI code is an
  137.           easy-to-use, intuitive tool for creating graphical interfaces,
  138.           eliminating the need for in-depth GUI development knowledge.
  139.           Programmers can create applications by selecting controls from the
  140.           control palette, moving them onto the design editor, thereby
  141.           providing an integrated "what you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) user
  142.           interface.  Either during or after this brief development process,
  143.           developers may build the application by coding in COBOL logic with
  144.           COBOL sensitive edit/compile/debug tools.
  145.           WORKFRAME/2:  IBM WorkFrame/2 provides seamless integration of all
  146.           the components included in the IBM VisualAge for COBOL for OS/2
  147.           product.  WorkFrame/2 is a highly configurable, project-oriented
  148.           application development environment for use on OS/2 and is
  149.           specifically designed to take full advantage of the features offered
  150.           by OS/2.  When used as the integration medium for application
  151.           development tools, the fully configurable IBM WorkFrame/2 increases
  152.           the effectiveness of these tools as agents for enhancing user
  153.           productivity.  IBM WorkFrame/2 organizes the programmer's workplace
  154.           by grouping files into logical units or projects.  As an organizer,
  155.           IBM WorkFrame/2:
  156.           o   Adapts to the user's project organization environment instead of
  157.               the project organization having to fit into the WorkFrame-defined
  158.               environment.
  159.           o   Sets up projects to consist of source and object files spanning
  160.               multiple directories and one target directory (such as EXE or
  161.               DLL).
  162.           o   Associates each project with multiple actions, including
  163.               compiling, debugging, making, linking, browsing,
  164.               profiling/analyzing, and preprocessing.
  165.           o   As a tools integrator, multiple developers can now work
  166.               concurrently on a single project by plugging in their own source
  167.               control system.
  168.           CONTEXT SENSITIVE EDITOR:  The LPEX Editor is a language-sensitive,
  169.           color editor which supports COBOL.  The LPEX Editor can be used to
  170.           create and edit many types of text files, including program source
  171.           and documentation.  By automatically parsing COBOL source code, LPEX
  172.           distinguishes between language constructs.  For instance, language
  173.           keywords, comments, string literals, and numbers are displayed using
  174.           distinctive fonts and colors.  Developers can quickly find items they

  181.           are looking for in their source code.  Using LPEX, developers can:
  182.           o   Be made aware of some syntax errors when the source code is
  183.               created.
  184.           o   Use multiple windows to display several documents or to display
  185.               more than one view of the same document.
  186.           o   Dynamically configure LPEX to be a multiple-window or
  187.               single-window tool.
  188.           o   Select a block of text and move or copy it between documents.
  189.           o   Cut and paste to a shell or another application.
  190.           o   Undo previous changes to a document.
  191.                  Developers can customize and extend virtually every aspect of
  192.           this programmable editor.  LPEX is designed to be extended through
  193.           dynamic link libraries; there is no proprietary extension language to
  194.           learn.  With the LPEX application programming interface (API),
  195.           developers can write powerful extensions to the editor using C and
  196.           C++.  In addition, LPEX provides a rich command language that
  197.           developers can use to create or modify editor functions.  Developers
  198.           can:
  199.           o   Define their own fonts and colors.
  200.           o   Modify the editor action key layout.
  201.           o   Add menus to perform frequently used commands (menu definitions
  202.               can be applied on a filename extension basis).
  203.           o   Write their own editor commands.
  204.           INTERACTIVE DEBUG TOOL FOR OS/2 (IDBUG):  The debug tool supplied
  205.           with IBM VisualAge for COBOL for OS/2 provides source level debugging
  206.           built around a set of core functions designed to let users quickly
  207.           and efficiently control execution and analyze data.  Users can:
  208.           o   Display and change variables.
  209.           o   Display and change storage.
  210.           o   Display and change the processor registers.
  211.           o   Display the call stack.
  212.           o   Add and delete simple and complex breakpoints.
  213.           o   Control the execution of multiple threads.
  214.           o   View source code as a listing, disassembly or mixed.
  215.                  CICS for OS/2 Version 3.0 transactions built with IBM
  216.           VisualAge for COBOL for OS/2 can be debugged interactively.
  217.                  For PM application programming support, synchronous and
  218.           asynchronous modes give users two ways to debug PM applications.  The
  219.           application windows can be managed concurrently with the debug tool
  220.           windows.
  221.           PERFORMANCE TUNING:  Execution trace analysis and performance tuning
  222.           is provided through the IBM Performance Analyzer.  It is designed to
  223.           help users tune and understand their programs by monitoring program
  224.           execution and generating a function-by-function trace of the run.
  225.           This trace can subsequently be examined by utility programs that
  226.           graphically display the execution trace.  Not only does the analyzer
  227.           trace procedures in the EXE file, but it traces the entry points to
  228.           system calls and application DLLs.
  229.           DATA ASSISTANT AND TRANSACTION ASSISTANT:  Data Assistant simplifies
  230.           the process of constructing syntactically-correct, embedded SQL
  231.           statements.  It gives you a graphical view of your relational
  232.           database, and allows you to map COBOL data structures to the database

  240.                  Transaction Assistant enables non-CICS COBOL applications to

  242.           OPEN ENTERPRISE:  IBM VisualAge for COBOL for OS/2 supports the high
  243.           subset of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) COBOL (ANSI
  244.           X3.23-1985) and International Standards Organization (ISO) COBOL (ISO
  245.           1989:1985), as well as the Intrinsic Function Module for COBOL (ANSI
  246.           X3.23a-1989 and ISO 1989/Amendment 1).
