*-------------------------------------------------------------------*
IBM's strategy to offer the most comprehensive and consistent
campus network management offering in the industry is realized today
in a series of major announcements.
What is new?
INTEGRATION OF THE FORMER NETWORK MANAGEMENT PRODUCTS INTO A
SINGLE, SEAMLESS SUITE OF APPLICATIONS, PRICED ATTRACTIVELY.
Nways (TM) Campus Management Suite is comprised of three
components (LAN, ATM, and RMON). You can order each separately or
order all three together at a reduced price. With this simple and
flexible approach, you pay only for what you need, when you need it.
You can migrate smoothly from a component to the full suite as your
network needs evolve.
AVAILABILITY OF A STATE-OF-THE-ART RMON MANAGEMENT
APPLICATION.
In addition to the full-standard RMON support, when used with
standard IBM or non-IBM RMON agents, leading-edge sniffer
capabilities are provided with IBM's extended RMON agents. This
application is part of the new Network Management Suite.
INTEGRATION OF THIS NETWORK MANAGEMENT SUITE WITH THE LEADING
IBM AND NON-IBM PLATFORMS.
o NetView (R) for AIX (R) feature of SystemView (R) for AIX
Nways Campus Manager for AIX, a member of the SystemView
(R) Family, fully integrates with the NetView for AIX feature of
SystemView for AIX.
o NetView for Windows+
o HP OpenView** (HPOV) for HP-UX**
Support of other platforms will be considered according to market
requirements.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
IBM's Nways network management strategy is articulated around
three main axes:
1. Provide a comprehensive yet simple management solution for campus
networks based on a very small number of applications, all
members of a unique network management suite.
Today's announcements cover this aspect of the strategy,
with IBM Campus Network Management Suite, which provides a
complete management solution for the full line of IBM's campus
networking products.
The LAN component manages the classical LAN subset (ENET,
token ring, FDDI) of a campus network. It manages the LAN part
of all IBM campus networking devices, including concentrators,
stackable hubs, intelligent hubs, LAN switches, bridges, and
routers.
You may find the LAN component most useful if you have not
migrated yet to the ATM technology.
The second component of the suite, the ATM component, is
the add-on application that you need to acquire to migrate, at
least partially, to the ATM technology. This ATM component
provides a complete ATM topology and management package for all
ATM capable IBM devices, such as ATM switches, concentrators, or
bridges.
The third component, RMON, is a leading edge RMON
management application with standard RMON capability and advanced
sniffer functions, when used in conjunction with IBM's advanced
RMON agents. This component is suitable if you need efficient
real-time monitoring of your network capacity, allowing proactive
management by early detection of congestion situation and fast
problem determination.
Finally, the full suite of all three components can be
ordered at a reduced price compared to the sum of the individual
component prices.
2. Support the leading IBM and non-IBM network management platforms.
o IBM Platforms
The AIX version of Nways Campus Manager is a member of
the SystemView family and is fully integrated with the
NetView for AIX feature of SystemView for AIX. The Windows

version is integrated with the IBM NetView for Windows
platform.
o Non-IBM Platforms
For the first time, IBM is porting its campus network
management offering on HP OpenView to satisfy customers who
choose to manage their network from this platform. IBM is
considering porting its management suite on other management
platforms according to customer requirements.
3. Shift from traditional, physical network management to virtual
network management.
As defined in the Switched Virtual Network strategy,
virtual LANs (VLANs) allow a customer to define a network based
on organizational, performance, and security requirements
independent of workstation and server physical attachment to the
network. Currently, four technologies implement the VLAN
concept: logical LANs created with intelligent hubs, virtual
domains created with LAN switches, ATM LAN emulation, and
Multiprotocol Switched Services.
VLAN technologies are managed at two levels. At the VLAN
level, specific management applications handle the unique
capabilities and requirements for each kind of VLAN.
Consistency, ease-of-use, and seamless integration with
applications for other resources are key common characteristics.
For example, drag-and-drop interfaces for configuring VLANs, and
navigation between physical and logical resources are common
features. Other VLAN functions include auto-discovery, status
monitoring, performance, fault and security management.
At the administrative level, network support for a
workgroup is defined in terms of a virtual network (Vnet) which,
in turn, is built with one or more VLANs. Vnet management
provides administrative control for workgroups while hiding the
supporting virtual and physical LAN complexity. Vnet management
delivers one of the greatest benefits of VLAN technology by
facilitating moves, adds, and changes. Reconfiguration of the
network to implement a change can, in many cases, be handled
automatically.
These management applications together with existing LAN
and ATM applications provide end-to-end VLAN management.
VLAN and Vnet management rely on SNMP and conform to all
available standards. As an example, LAN emulation management is
built using the specifications defined by the ATM forum, allowing
the VLAN applications to manage other conformant vendor products.
OPEN ENTERPRISE
Our products support:
o SNMP (RFC 1155, RFC 1157, RFC 1212, RFC1213).
o FTP
o TELNET 786
o IETF MIB II interface group
o RMON RFCs (Ethernet and token ring)
o RFC 1695, ATM UNI 3.1 for ILMI
PRODUCT POSITIONING
The AIX version of this new network management suite is a
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 4
member of the SystemView Family and is fully integrated with the
NetView for AIX feature of SystemView for AIX. It integrates and
replaces the following formerly stand-alone products:
o IHMP for AIX (Intelligent Hub Manager for AIX)
o ATMC for AIX (ATM Campus Manager for AIX)
o RABM for AIX (Router and Bridge Manager for AIX)
o All previously shipped Product Specific Modules (PSMs) for AIX
It also replaces (by its new, enhanced RMON component) the
former RMONitor (TM) for AIX. A price upgrade will be provided for
the owners of all these former products.
For HP OpenView for HP-UX, the suite is a staged porting of
the various AIX suite components, starting with IHMP, ATMC, and RMON.
These two UNIX (1) suites (on AIX and HP-UX) constitute IBM's
high-end campus network management offering, for medium to large
networks.
The Windows suite, Nways Campus Manager for Windows, announced
in June 1995, represents IBM's mid-range campus network management
offering, for small-to-medium networks. This suite runs on the
NetView for Windows platform.
IBM's low-end campus network management offering is based on
two stand-alone products running directly on Windows, without
management platform: IHMP/DOS Entry, managing the 8250, 8260, 8238,
and the RMON Base application announced in September 1995. This
offering is for customers with a small network made up only of
8250/60/38 devices who do not need to integrate their management on a
single network management platform.
Thess new products suites address only SNMP-managed devices.
Devices using the CMOL Management protocol continue to be managed by
LNM for OS/2 or LNM for AIX.
