  90.           TURNING DATA INTO INFORMATION
  91.           Today, too much time and resources are spent gathering and
  92.           manipulating data to create information needed for business analysis
  93.           and decisions.  To improve the quality and timeliness of their
  94.           decisions, businesses must maximize how effectively they use
  95.           information and minimize the time and resources spent collecting it.
  96.           To do this, many enterprises build data warehouses.
  97.                  Data warehouse is the industry term for a subject-oriented
  98.           informational data store that is specifically designed for business
  99.           data analysis.  When a data warehouse is well designed, end users
  100.           have access to data that the need to build a complete view of the
  101.           important aspects of their business.  For example,  many businesses
  102.           now require customer service personnel to make customer support
  103.           decisions on the spot.  These employees are empowered to solve unique
  104.           customer problems.  They need access to customer information to make
  105.           decisions about how to serve the customer.
  106.                  A data warehouse can contain data that is of interest to all
  107.           of the organizations in the enterprise, or it can contain data that
  108.           is specific to the interests of a single subject area or workgroup.
  109.           SUBJECT AREA OR WORKGROUP WAREHOUSES, "DATAMARTS"
  110.           IBM's Visual Warehouse is designed for the workgroup environment.  It
  111.           is ideal for a business group that wishes to build their own subject
  112.           area data warehouse.  Low relative start up costs, and ease of use
  113.           allow a workgroup to quickly build and manage a workgroup warehouse.
  114.           As the needs of the workgroup grow, Visual Warehouse can utilize a
  115.           larger database, or work with a centralized warehouse.

  127.           DATA DELIVERY THROUGH BUSINESS VIEWS
  128.           Visual Warehouse ensures the delivery of data to the workgroup data
  129.           warehouse environment through an easy-to-use integrated software
  130.           solution.  Visual Warehouse creates and maintains a data warehouse at
  131.           the department or business unit level with a relatively low level of
  132.           technical knowledge.  Data in the warehouse can be transparently
  133.           accessed by decision makers through decision support tools.  With
  134.           Visual Warehouse, a data warehouse is created and maintained through
  135.           business views.  Business views control how data is transformed into
  136.           meaningful business information.  They are used to automatically
  137.           extract, transfer, transform, and refresh the data in the warehouse.
  138.                  Business views can be defined as aggregations of data where
  139.           multiple data sources are combined to provide a single view of data
  140.           that decision makers need.  Summaries of data and data derivations
  141.           can also be provided.  Visual Warehouse has the capability of
  142.           maintaining multiple editions of any of these data sets.  The number
  143.           of editions are specified and Visual Warehouse automatically
  144.           maintains that number of editions, discarding the oldest copy when a
  145.           new copy is added.  In addition to business views, user defined
  146.           warehouse programs can be included to further cleanse the data.
  147.           These capabilities give decision makers a full range of flexibility
  148.           for managing data they may need to make business decisions.
  149.                  Once business views are defined within the Visual Warehouse no
  150.           programming is needed.  The Visual Warehouse engine drives the data
  151.           retrieval and data warehouse creation automatically.  Visual
  152.           Warehouse also provides retry capability in the case that a network
  153.           link is down.  The monitoring of business views and the Visual
  154.           Warehouse engine are also provided.  Logs and statistics are kept on
  155.           data retrievals.  And business view security is also provided.  This
  156.           administrative function frees up valuable personnel resources for
  157.           other projects.
  158.           INTEGRATED VIEW OF METADATA FOR ADMINISTRATOR AND END USER
  159.           In building a data warehouse it is very important that you understand
  160.           your data.  Metadata or data about your data, allows you to see how
  161.           data is related and what it truly means within your business.  For
  162.           example, a product price may be saved in many different places
  163.           throughout your computer systems and it may also mean different
  164.           things in each of those systems.  Visual Warehouse is a
  165.           metadata-driven system.  As metadata is entered into the system to
  166.           define the data sources, it is then mapped through business views to
  167.           the data warehouse.  This allows you to track or "drill-down" where
  168.           the decision support data comes from.
  169.           DATAGUIDE/2 AND VISUAL WAREHOUSE:  Visual Warehouse provides metadata
  170.           integration with DataGuide.  DataGuide is a generalized information
  171.           catalog tool which can provide a graphical representation of
  172.           information.  Visual Warehouse enhances DataGuide with additional
  173.           object definitions to represent business views.  Business view
  174.           metadata for aggregations, histories, data derivations, data sources

  184.                  DataGuide provides the business user a view of the data in the
  185.           warehouse.  Visual Warehouse generally will not be visible to the
  186.           decision maker, being used mostly by the administrator.  An added
  187.           benefit for the novice user is not only can they locate business data
  188.           but they can then "launch" any defined query program or command file
  189.           required to materialize the data or business object that the user
  190.           would like to see.
  191.           AN INTEGRATED SOLUTION
  192.           Visual Warehouse is an integrated solution, initially available on
  193.           OS/2, which builds a data warehouse utilizing DB2 for OS/2, AIX and
  194.           OS/400.  Visual Warehouse can retrieve data from a variety of sources
  195.           including the DB2 family, VSAM, IMS, VM flatfiles, Oracle, Sybase,
  196.           flat files, (OS/2 and AIX) and binary large objects (BLOBS).  As
  197.           market needs dictate, Visual Warehouse will be expanded to cover
  198.           other platforms and bring data in from other sources.
  199.           CONNECTIVITY TO ENTERPRISE DATA
  200.           Visual Warehouse contains the capability of connecting to the
  201.           enterprise.  Through DRDA (TM), IBM's Distributed Relational Database
  202.           Architecture (TM), Open DataBase Connectivity (ODBC), and
  203.           non-relational adapters, Visual Warehouse can connect to enterprise
  204.           data sources.
  205.                  Visual Warehouse is flexible in the way that it can be
  206.           configured.  It can reside on the same PC server as the warehouse
  207.           database or it can be remote from the warehouse databases.  Visual
  208.           Warehouse can manage several different data warehouses databases on
  209.           multiple platforms.
  210.           OPEN ENTERPRISE
  211.           o   ODBC standard is used to communicate with non-IBM relational
  212.               database sources.
  213.           o   DRDA is used to communicate with the DB2 Family of relational
  214.               database sources.
  215.           PART OF THE INFORMATION WAREHOUSE SOLUTION
  216.           Visual Warehouse is designed to work within the existing IBM
  217.           Information Warehouse family of products.  At the workgroup level it
  218.           is integrated with DataGuide and the Visualizer products.  DataGuide
  219.           provides the end-user view of the data in the warehouse.  Visualizer
  220.           is a powerful set of DSS products that enable the decision worker to
  221.           create information from the data in the warehouse.  Visual Warehouse
  222.           can also work with DProp (TM)/R for differential update to the
  223.           warehouse.

  242.           Services are available from IBM and non-IBM services providers.  The
  243.           consulting services are corequisite to the solution software and are
  244.           generally required to help the customer implement the Visual
  245.           Warehouse Solution.  Two service offerings are available from IBM
  246.           Consulting and Services and are separately priced.
  247.           PLANNING, CONFIGURING, AND INSTALLING VISUAL WAREHOUSE SERVICE
  248.           OFFERING:  This service offering provides the necessary activities to
  249.           deliver an initial Visual Warehouse environment.  The activities
  250.           include planning for one or two selected data sources to be moved
  251.           into the Visual Warehouse environment, installing and tailoring the
  252.           Visual Warehouse software, and configuring Visual Warehouse to
  253.           deliver your data.
  254.                  The output of this service offering will be a prototype data
  255.           warehouse that can be used to validate the initial vision, gain
  256.           commitment to a full implementation, and understand any technical
  257.           issues.
  258.                  Most customer installations will generally require a minimum
  259.           of five days of consulting services to implement the Visual Warehouse
  260.           solution.  This is a separately priced component of Visual Warehouse.
  261.           IBM will provide a proposal for the cost of these services upon the
  262.           customers request based on the individual customer needs.  This
  263.           service depends upon prerequisites being in place, the type and
  264.           number of data sources, the number of data enrichment activities
  265.           needed, and the number of business views defined.
  266.           VISUAL WAREHOUSE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION SERVICE OFFERING:  This
  267.           service offering provides the necessary activities to design and
  268.           implement a robust information warehouse using Visual Warehouse.  The
  269.           activities include gathering data requirements, developing a data
  270.           model based upon the requirements, building a data warehouse based
  271.           upon the developed model, and making the data warehouse available to
  272.           the business analysts.

  298.           Warehouse gives the customer the choice of which end-user tools they
  299.           would like to use.
  300.                  Visual Warehouse is a management tool that can also be used
  301.           with other data warehousing products.  The Visual Warehouse
  302.           architecture acknowledges that customers have many diverse types of
  303.           data in the enterprise that need to be consolidated into the data
  304.           warehouse.  Other middleware choices are also enabled to work with
  305.           Visual Warehouse.  This enables Visual Warehouse to take advantage of
  306.           IBM's best of breed middleware technologies within the Information
  307.           Warehouse architecture.
  308.           DECISION SUPPORT TOOLS AND THE WORKGROUP WAREHOUSE:  Most end-user
  309.           tool that uses the ODBC or DB2 for OS/2 Client Application Enabling
  310.           (CAE) interface can work with the Visual Warehouse.  CAE supports
  311.           Windows, DOS, MAC, AIX and OS/2 clients.  The Visualizer family of
  312.           products is a very powerful decision making solution and works well
  313.           with DataGuide and Visual Warehouse.  Visual Warehouse also has an
  314.           OS/2 client interface for tools that use standard files enabling them
  315.           to be stored in the warehouse (for example, spreadsheet files, Lotus
  316.           1-2-3, Excel).
  317.           DATAGUIDE/2 AND VISUAL WAREHOUSE:  Visual Warehouse provides metadata
  318.           integration with DataGuide.  DataGuide is a generalized information
  319.           catalog tool which can provide a graphical representation of
  320.           information.  Visual Warehouse enhances DataGuide with additional
  321.           object definitions to represent business views.  Business view
  322.           meta-data for aggregations, histories, data derivations, data sources
  323.           and descriptions can be viewed by the end user through DataGuide.

  326.           SYNERGY WITH THE ENTERPRISE INFORMATION WAREHOUSE PRODUCTS:  As the

  328.           utilize DataJoiner (TM), DPROP/R or DB2 for AIX and DB2 for OS/400 to
  329.           increase capacity and add additional functional value to the Visual
  330.           Warehouse Solution.
  331.           DATAJOINER AND VISUAL WAREHOUSE:  Visual Warehouse can use DataJoiner
  332.           for its capability to optimize complex heterogeneous joins.  Visual
  333.           Warehouse business views can be mapped to DataJoiner VIEWs.
  334.           DataJoiner can be used as a focal point for many Visual Warehouses as
  335.           a highly optimized middleware product that could decrease the amount
  336.           of data flowing across the network.  DataJoiner also increases the
  337.           transparency of the systems that the data is located on.  This can
  338.           simplify the warehouse administration.
  339.           DPROP/R AND VISUAL WAREHOUSE:  As the volume of data needed in the
  340.           warehouse grows, update capture technology available with DPROP/R can
  341.           complement the Visual Warehouse function.  The use of DPROP/R is
  342.           another way to decrease the amount of data flowing across the
  343.           network.  A Visual Warehouse table can be updated using DPROP/R.
  344.           DPROP/R is ideal for broadcasting data to many different Visual
  345.           Warehouses.  The choice between refresh and update propagation is
  346.           determined by the synchronization required and the volatility of the
  347.           data.

  356.           update propagation technology that DPROP/R delivers to the market is
  357.           the only such technology ideally suited for a warehouse.  DPROP/R
  358.           allows the propagation of histories and aggregations needed in a data

  360.           SCALABILITY OF WORKGROUP WAREHOUSE DATABASE:  If the workgroup
  361.           warehouse grows in size and number of users beyond the capacity of
  362.           DB2 for OS/2, then DB2 for AIX or DB2 for OS/400 can be used as the
  363.           warehouse datastore.  Visual Warehouse can control creation and
  364.           maintenance of DB2 for OS/2, AIX and OS/400 data warehouses in a LAN
  365.           connected environment.
  366.                  An enterprise warehouse can be a large centralized data store
  367.           or a distributed set of data stores that form a logical enterprise
  368.           warehouse.  Visual Warehouse can manage a single small workgroup or
  369.           it can manage a distributed set of datamarts that form a bigger
  370.           entity.  Visual Warehouse builds data warehouses in the LAN

  396.           HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR A VISUAL WAREHOUSE SERVER
  397.                  The Visual Warehouse server supports any workstation capable
  398.           of running OS/2 2.11 or OS/2 Warp (including Warp Connect).  The
  399.           Visual Warehouse requires the following configuration:
  400.           o   486DX 66MHz is the minimum system.  A Pentium class system is
  401.               recommended.
  402.           o   32MB RAM minimum.  48MB to 64MB RAM is recommended.
  403.                  The Visual Warehouse server requires hard disk space for the
  404.           product, its prerequisites, and the warehouse databases that are on
  405.           the server.
  406.           o   70MB of hard disk space for the product.

  413.           o   250MB of hard disk space can typically contain the Visual
  414.               Warehouse prerequisites and their requirements for SWAPPER space.
  415.           o   To determine the hard disk space needed for your server
  416.               installation, you should also include the expected size of any
  417.               warehouse databases on the server you plan to use, including log
  418.               files and tables.
  419.                  HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR VISUAL WAREHOUSE CLIENTS
  420.                  In addition to the space required for prerequisite software
  421.           and user data, Visual Warehouse clients require the following
  422.           resources:
  423.           o   Workstation Clients doing Administration and Operations require:
  424.               -   486 class workstation or greater capable of running OS/2 2.11
  425.                   or OS/2 Warp (including Warp Connect)
  426.               -   32MB minimum of RAM recommended
  427.               -   40MB of hard disk space for the product.  Only 1MB of hard
  428.                   disk space is needed if the client accesses Visual Warehouse
  429.                   functions stored on a LAN code server.
  430.           o   Workstation Clients that use the warehouse Virtual-Drive option
  431.               require:
  432.               -   386 class workstation or greater capable of running OS/2
  433.                   Version 2.11 or OS/2 Warp (including Warp Connect).
  434.               -   1MB of additional hard disk space for product (not including
  435.                   temporary retrieval space for files).
  436.               -   8MB minimum of RAM recommended.
  437.           o   Workstation Clients that connect to warehouse databases have no
  438.               additional requirements if they can connect to the DB2 warehouse
  439.               database.
  440.           SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
  441.           SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR A VISUAL WAREHOUSE SERVER
  442.                  The Visual Warehouse requires the following software on the
  443.           server:
  444.           o   OS/2 Version 2.11, or OS/2 Warp, OS/2 Warp Connect
  445.           o   DB2 for OS/2 Version 2.1 with service update WR08045
  446.           o   DDCS/2 Version 2.3 Multi-User Gateway
  447.           o   Communications Manager/2 (CM/2) 1.11
  448.           o   Connectivity software, which is dependent on the types of
  449.               communication protocol being used by clients
  450.                  DATABASE COMMUNICATIONS:  DB2 for OS/2 supports APPC, NetBIOS,
  451.           TCP/IP, and Novell IPX/SPX protocols for both server and client
  452.           function.  The communication software you require depends on the
  453.           protocol you wish to use.  The database server can accept requests
  454.           from multiple protocols concurrently.  If you wish to use several
  455.           protocols, you should ensure that you have all the required products
  456.           installed (see DB2 for OS/2 Version 2.1 documentation for additional
  457.           detail).
  458.                  The communication software can be one or more of the
  459.           following:
  460.           o   If using OS/2 Warp Connect:
  461.               -   For TCP/IP and NetBIOS connectivity, no additional
  462.                   requirements
  463.               -   For APPC connectivity, Communications Manager/2 (CM/2)
  464.                   Version 1.11 (required to communicate from LAN to MVS or VM

  647.           PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:  The server memory and processor size
  648.           most directly impact the performance of Visual Warehouse.  For
  649.           example, if Visual Warehouse is running on a 486 33MHz server with
  650.           8MB of RAM, and 32MB of RAM is added, the performance is dramatically
  651.           improved.
  652.           PLANNING INFORMATION
  653.           CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES:  Try and Buy software is included in
  654.           Visual Warehouse (base) and in the Visual Warehouse Solution.  The
  655.           Try and Buy software can be used for the purpose of testing and
  656.           evaluating the programs for 60 days from your initial use.  You may
  657.           not decompile, disassemble or otherwise attempt to translate or seek
  658.           to gain access to the program source code.  After 60 days, these
  659.           programs must be purchased to continue usage.
  660.                  A Visual Warehouse license allows for Visual Warehouse to be
