OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
TURNING DATA INTO INFORMATION
Today, too much time and resources are spent gathering and
manipulating data to create information needed for business analysis
and decisions. To improve the quality and timeliness of their
decisions, businesses must maximize how effectively they use
information and minimize the time and resources spent collecting it.
To do this, many enterprises build data warehouses.
Data warehouse is the industry term for a subject-oriented
informational data store that is specifically designed for business
data analysis. When a data warehouse is well designed, end users
have access to data that the need to build a complete view of the
important aspects of their business. For example, many businesses
now require customer service personnel to make customer support
decisions on the spot. These employees are empowered to solve unique
customer problems. They need access to customer information to make
decisions about how to serve the customer.
A data warehouse can contain data that is of interest to all
of the organizations in the enterprise, or it can contain data that
is specific to the interests of a single subject area or workgroup.
SUBJECT AREA OR WORKGROUP WAREHOUSES, "DATAMARTS"
IBM's Visual Warehouse is designed for the workgroup environment. It
is ideal for a business group that wishes to build their own subject
area data warehouse. Low relative start up costs, and ease of use
allow a workgroup to quickly build and manage a workgroup warehouse.
As the needs of the workgroup grow, Visual Warehouse can utilize a
larger database, or work with a centralized warehouse.
In some cases business groups are finding it hard to get their
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 3
needs met by constrained I/S resources. Visual Warehouse will help
the business groups to be more autonomous without losing data
integrity and security. Data delivery can be managed from the LAN
environment or it can be centrally managed.
DATA DELIVERY THROUGH BUSINESS VIEWS
Visual Warehouse ensures the delivery of data to the workgroup data
warehouse environment through an easy-to-use integrated software
solution. Visual Warehouse creates and maintains a data warehouse at
the department or business unit level with a relatively low level of
technical knowledge. Data in the warehouse can be transparently
accessed by decision makers through decision support tools. With
Visual Warehouse, a data warehouse is created and maintained through
business views. Business views control how data is transformed into
meaningful business information. They are used to automatically
extract, transfer, transform, and refresh the data in the warehouse.
Business views can be defined as aggregations of data where
multiple data sources are combined to provide a single view of data
that decision makers need. Summaries of data and data derivations
can also be provided. Visual Warehouse has the capability of
maintaining multiple editions of any of these data sets. The number
of editions are specified and Visual Warehouse automatically
maintains that number of editions, discarding the oldest copy when a
new copy is added. In addition to business views, user defined
warehouse programs can be included to further cleanse the data.
These capabilities give decision makers a full range of flexibility
for managing data they may need to make business decisions.
Once business views are defined within the Visual Warehouse no
programming is needed. The Visual Warehouse engine drives the data
retrieval and data warehouse creation automatically. Visual
Warehouse also provides retry capability in the case that a network
link is down. The monitoring of business views and the Visual
Warehouse engine are also provided. Logs and statistics are kept on
data retrievals. And business view security is also provided. This
administrative function frees up valuable personnel resources for
other projects.
INTEGRATED VIEW OF METADATA FOR ADMINISTRATOR AND END USER
In building a data warehouse it is very important that you understand
your data. Metadata or data about your data, allows you to see how
data is related and what it truly means within your business. For
example, a product price may be saved in many different places
throughout your computer systems and it may also mean different
things in each of those systems. Visual Warehouse is a
metadata-driven system. As metadata is entered into the system to
define the data sources, it is then mapped through business views to
the data warehouse. This allows you to track or "drill-down" where
the decision support data comes from.
DATAGUIDE/2 AND VISUAL WAREHOUSE: Visual Warehouse provides metadata
integration with DataGuide. DataGuide is a generalized information
catalog tool which can provide a graphical representation of
information. Visual Warehouse enhances DataGuide with additional
object definitions to represent business views. Business view
metadata for aggregations, histories, data derivations, data sources
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 4
and descriptions can be viewed by the end user through DataGuide.
This helps the end user understand the warehouse data through a
browse, search and "drill-down" interface.
DataGuide provides the business user a view of the data in the
warehouse. Visual Warehouse generally will not be visible to the
decision maker, being used mostly by the administrator. An added
benefit for the novice user is not only can they locate business data
but they can then "launch" any defined query program or command file
required to materialize the data or business object that the user
would like to see.
AN INTEGRATED SOLUTION
Visual Warehouse is an integrated solution, initially available on
OS/2, which builds a data warehouse utilizing DB2 for OS/2, AIX and
OS/400. Visual Warehouse can retrieve data from a variety of sources
including the DB2 family, VSAM, IMS, VM flatfiles, Oracle, Sybase,
flat files, (OS/2 and AIX) and binary large objects (BLOBS). As
market needs dictate, Visual Warehouse will be expanded to cover
other platforms and bring data in from other sources.
CONNECTIVITY TO ENTERPRISE DATA
Visual Warehouse contains the capability of connecting to the
enterprise. Through DRDA (TM), IBM's Distributed Relational Database
Architecture (TM), Open DataBase Connectivity (ODBC), and
non-relational adapters, Visual Warehouse can connect to enterprise
data sources.
Visual Warehouse is flexible in the way that it can be
configured. It can reside on the same PC server as the warehouse
database or it can be remote from the warehouse databases. Visual
Warehouse can manage several different data warehouses databases on
multiple platforms.
OPEN ENTERPRISE
o ODBC standard is used to communicate with non-IBM relational
database sources.
o DRDA is used to communicate with the DB2 Family of relational
database sources.
PART OF THE INFORMATION WAREHOUSE SOLUTION
Visual Warehouse is designed to work within the existing IBM
Information Warehouse family of products. At the workgroup level it
is integrated with DataGuide and the Visualizer products. DataGuide
provides the end-user view of the data in the warehouse. Visualizer
is a powerful set of DSS products that enable the decision worker to
create information from the data in the warehouse. Visual Warehouse
can also work with DProp (TM)/R for differential update to the
warehouse.
BENEFITS
Visual Warehouse provides several key benefits for constructing a
departmental data warehouse.
o Because Visual Warehouse is a COMPLETE SOLUTION for the LAN
environment other tools are not needed. This enables a reliable
solution for meeting a departments needs to access business data.
o INTEGRATED METADATA for both the administrator and end user
provides a complete and accurate view of the business data and
information in the data warehouse.
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 5
o With a relatively LOW INITIAL INVESTMENT, a work group data
warehouse can be easily attained.

PRODUCT POSITIONING
Visual Warehouse is a complete data warehouse solution for the
LAN environment. However, a business group can use Visual Warehouse
with practically any end-user decision support tool to solve their
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 6
warehousing needs. Through the use of standard interfaces, Visual
Warehouse gives the customer the choice of which end-user tools they
would like to use.
Visual Warehouse is a management tool that can also be used
with other data warehousing products. The Visual Warehouse
architecture acknowledges that customers have many diverse types of
data in the enterprise that need to be consolidated into the data
warehouse. Other middleware choices are also enabled to work with
Visual Warehouse. This enables Visual Warehouse to take advantage of
IBM's best of breed middleware technologies within the Information
Warehouse architecture.
DECISION SUPPORT TOOLS AND THE WORKGROUP WAREHOUSE: Most end-user
tool that uses the ODBC or DB2 for OS/2 Client Application Enabling
(CAE) interface can work with the Visual Warehouse. CAE supports
Windows, DOS, MAC, AIX and OS/2 clients. The Visualizer family of
products is a very powerful decision making solution and works well
with DataGuide and Visual Warehouse. Visual Warehouse also has an
OS/2 client interface for tools that use standard files enabling them
to be stored in the warehouse (for example, spreadsheet files, Lotus
1-2-3, Excel).
DATAGUIDE/2 AND VISUAL WAREHOUSE: Visual Warehouse provides metadata
integration with DataGuide. DataGuide is a generalized information
catalog tool which can provide a graphical representation of
information. Visual Warehouse enhances DataGuide with additional
object definitions to represent business views. Business view
meta-data for aggregations, histories, data derivations, data sources
and descriptions can be viewed by the end user through DataGuide.
This helps the end user understand the warehouse data through browse,
search and "drill-down" interface.
SYNERGY WITH THE ENTERPRISE INFORMATION WAREHOUSE PRODUCTS: As the
workgroup grows in their warehouse data needs it is also possible to
utilize DataJoiner (TM), DPROP/R or DB2 for AIX and DB2 for OS/400 to
increase capacity and add additional functional value to the Visual
Warehouse Solution.
DATAJOINER AND VISUAL WAREHOUSE: Visual Warehouse can use DataJoiner
for its capability to optimize complex heterogeneous joins. Visual
Warehouse business views can be mapped to DataJoiner VIEWs.
DataJoiner can be used as a focal point for many Visual Warehouses as
a highly optimized middleware product that could decrease the amount
of data flowing across the network. DataJoiner also increases the
transparency of the systems that the data is located on. This can
simplify the warehouse administration.
DPROP/R AND VISUAL WAREHOUSE: As the volume of data needed in the
warehouse grows, update capture technology available with DPROP/R can
complement the Visual Warehouse function. The use of DPROP/R is
another way to decrease the amount of data flowing across the
network. A Visual Warehouse table can be updated using DPROP/R.
DPROP/R is ideal for broadcasting data to many different Visual
Warehouses. The choice between refresh and update propagation is
determined by the synchronization required and the volatility of the
data.
DPROP/R is ideally suited to move data between the DB2 family
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 7
of databases with update propagation technology. The differential
update propagation technology that DPROP/R delivers to the market is
the only such technology ideally suited for a warehouse. DPROP/R
allows the propagation of histories and aggregations needed in a data
warehouse.
SCALABILITY OF WORKGROUP WAREHOUSE DATABASE: If the workgroup
warehouse grows in size and number of users beyond the capacity of
DB2 for OS/2, then DB2 for AIX or DB2 for OS/400 can be used as the
warehouse datastore. Visual Warehouse can control creation and
maintenance of DB2 for OS/2, AIX and OS/400 data warehouses in a LAN
connected environment.
An enterprise warehouse can be a large centralized data store
or a distributed set of data stores that form a logical enterprise
warehouse. Visual Warehouse can manage a single small workgroup or
it can manage a distributed set of datamarts that form a bigger
entity. Visual Warehouse builds data warehouses in the LAN
environment.
STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION
IBM will continue to evolve Visual Warehouse to meet market demands.
Some of the high priorities include additional operational data
sources, additional target data warehouse platforms and additional
integration with key Information Warehouse products.
