  33.                  The IBM Internet Connection family of products now includes
  34.           three new transmission products that provide the security you need to
  35.           protect sensitive or confidential data from general access on the
  36.           Internet.  These new products protect your data in the following
  37.           ways:
  38.           o   The IBM Internet Connection Secure WebExplorer for OS/2 (R) Warp
  39.               product, a World Wide Web (WWW) browser, allows you to conduct
  40.               secure transactions on the Internet, such as making an online
  41.               purchase using a credit card number.
  42.           o   The IBM Internet Connection Secure Server for AIX (R) and the IBM
  43.               Internet Connection Secure Server for OS/2 Warp products allow
  44.               you to host your own secure Web pages.  This gives you a presence
  45.               on the Internet and complements a secure Web browser to provide
  46.               security at both ends of a transaction.
  47.                  IBM has implemented the Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol
  48.           (S-HTTP) and the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol into the
  49.           Internet Connection family, so you can confidently and easily send
  50.           secure communications and transactions over the Internet.
  51.                  IBM's award-winning WebExplorer also includes additional
  52.           browser capabilities, such as new HTML and Newsgroup extensions.
  53.           These new capabilities are made available in the IBM Internet
  54.           Connection Secure WebExplorer program and through the software
  55.           download feature of the Internet Connection program provided with
  56.           OS/2 Warp.

  81. OVERVIEW  DESCRIPTION
  82.                  With the advent of electronic commerce, along with
  83.           intra-company communications, information privacy becomes a
  84.           necessity.  To provide for secure electronic transmissions, the
  85.           client (browser) and server (the computer on which the Web pages
  86.           reside) must support the same security protocol.  To ensure maximum
  87.           flexibility, two security protocols are supported in the new Internet
  88.           Connection Secure products:  SSL and S-HTTP.
  89.           INTERNET CONNECTION SECURE WEBEXPLORER VERSION 1.1 FOR OS/2 WARP:
  90.           Now IBM's award-winning WebExplorer browser allows you to conduct
  91.           electronic commerce by protecting your private data.  Not only can
  92.           you explore the WWW, communicate in newsgroups, and complete
  93.           research, you can now order products and services online and know
  94.           that your credit and order information is protected from public view.
  95.                  Internet Connection Secure WebExplorer Version 1.1 for
  96.           OS/2 Warp protects your private data through two processes called
  97.           encryption and authentication.  To encrypt your order simply means
  98.           that WebExplorer scrambles all of the order data before you send it,
  99.           making it unreadable by anyone other than the intended receiver.  The
  100.           receiver has the matching encryption key to unscramble the data on
  101.           receipt.  Authentication is the process used to verify the identity
  102.           of the receiver, so you can make sure that others are who they say
  103.           they are.  You can ensure authenticity by exchanging a password or
  104.           key that is known only to you and the receiver.  The SSL and S-HTTP
  105.           protocols are used to exploit the encryption technology.
  106.           o   SSL is an end-to-end method that encrypts data transmitted
  107.               between two application interfaces, or sockets, such as the Web
  108.               client (browser) and server interfaces.  SSL is enabled between
  109.               these two end-points once, and anything transmitted between them
  110.               is encrypted from then on.  SSL provides the security features of
  111.               server authentication and client/server encryption on a "blanket
  112.               coverage" basis between the two end-points.
  113.           o   S-HTTP is a transaction-based method, which provides security
  114.               between an HTTP client/server pair to enable spontaneous
  115.               transactions.  S-HTTP provides a high degree of flexibility in
  116.               securing transactions by allowing authentication and encryption

  123.               to be applied independently.
  124.                  Both protocols support a variety of cryptographic message
  125.           format standards or modes, which determines the encryption algorithm
  126.           and key strength.
  127.                  With the Internet Connection Secure WebExplorer for OS/2 Warp,
  128.           you can perform key management services and other security-related
  129.           tasks, such as obtaining security information about a current
  130.           document, changing keyring passwords, and configuring security
  131.           alerts.  The user can also view a graphic representation of a
  132.           document's security level.
  133.                  Internet Connection Secure WebExplorer has also been enhanced
  134.           with the following new features.  These new features will also be
  135.           available on September 29, 1995, through OS/2 Warp's Internet
  136.           Connection "Retrieve Software Updates" utility.
  137.           o   Additional HTML extensions
  138.                      These extensions include the ability to format tables, use
  139.               specified background and text color (including colors for default
  140.               text, default links, and visited links), align images, and flow
  141.               text around them.
  142.           o   Enhanced Newsgroup functions
  143.                      With the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) NEWSRC:, you can
  144.               access the Newsgroup Manager.  This new feature allows you to
  145.               list the newsgroups provided by your news server and subscribe to
  146.               your favorite groups.  The Newsgroup Manager monitors your
  147.               subscriptions and reports the number of unread articles since
  148.               your last session or update.  You can add or delete subscriptions
  149.               at any time.  You are able to access a newsgroup either by
  150.               selecting it from your list of subscriptions or by going directly
  151.               to it using the news protocol followed by the URL.  You can load
  152.               and browse the news articles a portion at a time or all at once.
  153.               The new Next Thread and Previous Thread navigation functions
  154.               allow you to read through the various postings and follow a
  155.               conversation thread more easily.  Any recognized protocols within
  156.               the text are displayed as links so you can go directly to them.
  157.               You can now send a response to a specific article in a newsgroup,
  158.               as well as post your own articles and mail a reply directly to
  159.               the author of an article.
  160.           INTERNET CONNECTION SECURE SERVER VERSION 1.1 FOR AIX AND INTERNET
  161.           CONNECTION SECURE SERVER VERSION 1.1 FOR OS/2 WARP:  Internet servers
  162.           provide the vehicle for hosting Web pages.  With these Web pages, you
  163.           can publish product descriptions and price lists, distribute a wealth
  164.           of up-to-date presales or postsales information using text, graphics,
  165.           audio, and video, and you can track how your customers use the
  166.           information you publish.
  167.                  The Internet Connection Secure Server Version 1.1 for AIX and
  168.           the Internet Connection Secure Server Version 1.1 for OS/2 Warp take
  169.           you a step beyond this by giving you and your customers a secure
  170.           environment in which to conduct business transactions.  Working with
  171.           a secure browser, transactions on the sending and receiving ends are
  172.           secure.  The Internet Connection Secure Servers support the SSL and
  173.           S-HTTP protocols.

  181.           enhancements have also been made to the Internet Connection Secure
  182.           Server products.  The overhead of starting and stopping a "thread"
  183.           for each request is minimized by thread pooling.  The server
  184.           administrator can also effectively control the amount of load on the
  185.           server by configuring an upper limit on the number of threads the
  186.           server will use.  Static caching for frequently accessed pages avoids
  187.           the overhead of reading files from disk and, instead, satisfies
  188.           requests directly from memory.
  189.                  The Internet Connection Secure Servers continue to provide all
  190.           the functions needed for you to build your Web pages, such as:
  191.           o   Act as a repository for home pages created with Hypertext Markup
  192.               Language (HTML).
  193.           o   Answer requests from a Web browser (client) using Hypertext
  194.               Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to transfer documents.
  195.           o   Provide proxy support, allowing a Web browser to access remote
  196.               servers not directly accessible to it.  The proxy server supports
  197.               requests from HTTP, File Transfer Protocol, and Gopher, and acts
  198.               on their behalf.
  199.           o   Support proxy caching by temporarily storing files and, then,
  200.               quickly responding to the next request for the files.
  201.           o   Provide application interfaces using Common Gateway Interface, an
  202.               emerging standard application programming interface between the
  203.               Internet Connection Secure Server and another application, such
  204.               as a database.
  205.                  An upgrade package is available for those who purchased the
  206.           IBM Internet Connection Server Version 1.0 for AIX or OS/2 Warp.
  207.           Since some customers do not require the security features available
  208.           in these new Internet Connection Secure products, the Internet
  209.           Connection Version 1.0 Server products will continue to be available.
  210.                  To comply with export regulations, exportable versions of
  211.           Internet Connection Secure Server Version 1.1 for AIX, Internet
  212.           Connection Secure Server Version 1.1 for OS/2 Warp, and Internet
  213.           Connection Secure WebExplorer Version 1.1 for OS/2 Warp are provided.
  214.           NATIONAL LANGUAGE SUPPORT:  IBM Internet Connection Secure Server
