The IBM Internet Connection family of products now includes
three new transmission products that provide the security you need to
protect sensitive or confidential data from general access on the
Internet. These new products protect your data in the following
ways:
o The IBM Internet Connection Secure WebExplorer for OS/2 (R) Warp
product, a World Wide Web (WWW) browser, allows you to conduct
secure transactions on the Internet, such as making an online
purchase using a credit card number.
o The IBM Internet Connection Secure Server for AIX (R) and the IBM
Internet Connection Secure Server for OS/2 Warp products allow
you to host your own secure Web pages. This gives you a presence
on the Internet and complements a secure Web browser to provide
security at both ends of a transaction.
IBM has implemented the Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol
(S-HTTP) and the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol into the
Internet Connection family, so you can confidently and easily send
secure communications and transactions over the Internet.
IBM's award-winning WebExplorer also includes additional
browser capabilities, such as new HTML and Newsgroup extensions.
These new capabilities are made available in the IBM Internet
Connection Secure WebExplorer program and through the software
download feature of the Internet Connection program provided with
OS/2 Warp.
IBM's Internet Connection family also includes complementary
network protection with the addition of the IBM Internet Connection
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 2
Secured Network Gateway for AIX product. This gateway is a firewall
that screens your internal network from external intrusion by
unauthorized users on the Internet by selectively filtering
communications traffic. Refer to Software Announcement 295-407,
dated September 26, 1995, for details.
IBM's Internet Connection family of products provides a total
solution for meeting your Internet needs.
For a comprehensive look at the entire family of Internet
Connection products, refer to Software Announcement 295-075, dated
February 28, 1995, and Software Announcements 295-277 and 295-278,
dated June 19, 1995.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
With the advent of electronic commerce, along with
intra-company communications, information privacy becomes a
necessity. To provide for secure electronic transmissions, the
client (browser) and server (the computer on which the Web pages
reside) must support the same security protocol. To ensure maximum
flexibility, two security protocols are supported in the new Internet
Connection Secure products: SSL and S-HTTP.
INTERNET CONNECTION SECURE WEBEXPLORER VERSION 1.1 FOR OS/2 WARP:
Now IBM's award-winning WebExplorer browser allows you to conduct
electronic commerce by protecting your private data. Not only can
you explore the WWW, communicate in newsgroups, and complete
research, you can now order products and services online and know
that your credit and order information is protected from public view.
Internet Connection Secure WebExplorer Version 1.1 for
OS/2 Warp protects your private data through two processes called
encryption and authentication. To encrypt your order simply means
that WebExplorer scrambles all of the order data before you send it,
making it unreadable by anyone other than the intended receiver. The
receiver has the matching encryption key to unscramble the data on
receipt. Authentication is the process used to verify the identity
of the receiver, so you can make sure that others are who they say
they are. You can ensure authenticity by exchanging a password or
key that is known only to you and the receiver. The SSL and S-HTTP
protocols are used to exploit the encryption technology.
o SSL is an end-to-end method that encrypts data transmitted
between two application interfaces, or sockets, such as the Web
client (browser) and server interfaces. SSL is enabled between
these two end-points once, and anything transmitted between them
is encrypted from then on. SSL provides the security features of
server authentication and client/server encryption on a "blanket
coverage" basis between the two end-points.
o S-HTTP is a transaction-based method, which provides security
between an HTTP client/server pair to enable spontaneous
transactions. S-HTTP provides a high degree of flexibility in
securing transactions by allowing authentication and encryption
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 3
to be applied independently.
Both protocols support a variety of cryptographic message
format standards or modes, which determines the encryption algorithm
and key strength.
With the Internet Connection Secure WebExplorer for OS/2 Warp,
you can perform key management services and other security-related
tasks, such as obtaining security information about a current
document, changing keyring passwords, and configuring security
alerts. The user can also view a graphic representation of a
document's security level.
Internet Connection Secure WebExplorer has also been enhanced
with the following new features. These new features will also be
available on September 29, 1995, through OS/2 Warp's Internet
Connection "Retrieve Software Updates" utility.
o Additional HTML extensions
These extensions include the ability to format tables, use
specified background and text color (including colors for default
text, default links, and visited links), align images, and flow
text around them.
o Enhanced Newsgroup functions
With the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) NEWSRC:, you can
access the Newsgroup Manager. This new feature allows you to
list the newsgroups provided by your news server and subscribe to
your favorite groups. The Newsgroup Manager monitors your
subscriptions and reports the number of unread articles since
your last session or update. You can add or delete subscriptions
at any time. You are able to access a newsgroup either by
selecting it from your list of subscriptions or by going directly
to it using the news protocol followed by the URL. You can load
and browse the news articles a portion at a time or all at once.
The new Next Thread and Previous Thread navigation functions
allow you to read through the various postings and follow a
conversation thread more easily. Any recognized protocols within
the text are displayed as links so you can go directly to them.
You can now send a response to a specific article in a newsgroup,
as well as post your own articles and mail a reply directly to
the author of an article.
INTERNET CONNECTION SECURE SERVER VERSION 1.1 FOR AIX AND INTERNET
CONNECTION SECURE SERVER VERSION 1.1 FOR OS/2 WARP: Internet servers
provide the vehicle for hosting Web pages. With these Web pages, you
can publish product descriptions and price lists, distribute a wealth
of up-to-date presales or postsales information using text, graphics,
audio, and video, and you can track how your customers use the
information you publish.
The Internet Connection Secure Server Version 1.1 for AIX and
the Internet Connection Secure Server Version 1.1 for OS/2 Warp take
you a step beyond this by giving you and your customers a secure
environment in which to conduct business transactions. Working with
a secure browser, transactions on the sending and receiving ends are
secure. The Internet Connection Secure Servers support the SSL and
S-HTTP protocols.
In addition to the security enhancements, server performance
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 4
enhancements have also been made to the Internet Connection Secure
Server products. The overhead of starting and stopping a "thread"
for each request is minimized by thread pooling. The server
administrator can also effectively control the amount of load on the
server by configuring an upper limit on the number of threads the
server will use. Static caching for frequently accessed pages avoids
the overhead of reading files from disk and, instead, satisfies
requests directly from memory.
The Internet Connection Secure Servers continue to provide all
the functions needed for you to build your Web pages, such as:
o Act as a repository for home pages created with Hypertext Markup
Language (HTML).
o Answer requests from a Web browser (client) using Hypertext
Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to transfer documents.
o Provide proxy support, allowing a Web browser to access remote
servers not directly accessible to it. The proxy server supports
requests from HTTP, File Transfer Protocol, and Gopher, and acts
on their behalf.
o Support proxy caching by temporarily storing files and, then,
quickly responding to the next request for the files.
o Provide application interfaces using Common Gateway Interface, an
emerging standard application programming interface between the
Internet Connection Secure Server and another application, such
as a database.
An upgrade package is available for those who purchased the
IBM Internet Connection Server Version 1.0 for AIX or OS/2 Warp.
Since some customers do not require the security features available
in these new Internet Connection Secure products, the Internet
Connection Version 1.0 Server products will continue to be available.
To comply with export regulations, exportable versions of
Internet Connection Secure Server Version 1.1 for AIX, Internet
Connection Secure Server Version 1.1 for OS/2 Warp, and Internet
Connection Secure WebExplorer Version 1.1 for OS/2 Warp are provided.
