  53.                  PL/I for OS/2 provides the PL/I programmer with 32-bit support
  54.           on the OS/2 operating system.  In addition, a PL/I application
  55.           development environment is provided that is designed especially to
  56.           handle mission critical, line-of-business applications through visual
  57.           programming and construction-from-components technologies.  PL/I for
  58.           OS/2 is offered in three options -- a Personal Edition, a

  66.           IBM PL/I FOR OS/2 PERSONAL EDITION:  PL/I for OS/2 Personal Edition
  67.           was designed for small software development companies, consultants,
  68.           and students.  The Personal Edition contains a full 32-bit compiler,
  69.           run-time library, and graphical, interactive debugging facility that
  70.           supports new PL/I application development on stand-alone PCs or small
  71.           LANs.
  72.           IBM PL/I FOR OS/2 PROFESSIONAL EDITION:  PL/I for OS/2 Professional
  73.           Edition includes all of the features of the Personal Edition, plus
  74.           additional function that enhances compatibility with the mainframe
  75.           compiler.  Developers can build and test host-based VSAM, DB2 (R),
  76.           CICS (TM), and IMS (TM) applications, or they can take advantage of
  77.           PL/I for OS/2 (in combination with DB2/2 (TM), CICS OS/2 (TM), and
  78.           IMS Client Server/2 (TM)) to create client/server applications that
  79.           integrate with existing mainframe programs.
  80.           IBM PL/I FOR OS/2 TOOLKIT:  PL/I for OS/2 Toolkit helps you
  81.           streamline the programming process, offering a development
  82.           environment for PL/I for OS/2 Presentation Manager (R) (PM)
  83.           applications.  The Toolkit is a collection of tools designed to
  84.           complement either the Professional or Personal Edition of PL/I for
  85.           OS/2.  The Toolkit includes a visual prototyping tool and code
  86.           generator that can help you develop graphical user interfaces, a
  87.           programming aid designed to help you convert C header files to PL/I
  88.           header files, and the OS/2 Developer's Toolkit.

  91.           PRODUCT POSITIONING
  92.                  As a PL/I customer, if you thought you would need to look to
  93.           other languages as your only option in creating powerful
  94.           client/server applications, or moving to emerging technologies, be
  95.           assured there is another option.  You can remain with PL/I and still
  96.           take advantage of these new technologies.  IBM's PL/I family of
  97.           products allows you to take advantage of the existing skill in your
  98.           organization, preserve the valuable program base and subsystem
  99.           linkages you built, and still move aggressively to utilize
  100.           workstations in mission critical applications.  Application
  101.           development on new platforms and/or with emerging technologies can
  102.           begin in a gradual manner without the need to retrain programmers and
  103.           undertake a new language.
  104.                  IBM's PL/I family of products provides a consistent PL/I
  105.           across multiple platforms.  The IBM PL/I offerings now reach across
  106.           workstation and host environments (OS/2, AIX (R), MVS, VM, AS/400
  107.           (R), and VSE) -- with consistent language implementation and
  108.           optimized run-time performance for the target platform -- to support
  109.           dedicated or client/server applications.  These environments all have
  110.           access to data through VSAM, DB2, IMS, and CICS, where present.
  111.                  For native host development, you will be able to use IBM PL/I
  112.           for MVS & VM with IBM Language Environment (R) for MVS & VM, or IBM
  113.           PL/I for VSE with IBM Language Environment for VSE, to support
  114.           creation of host applications.  Language Environment provides a
  115.           common run-time environment for language products that conform to its
  116.           architecture (that is, IBM PL/I for MVS & VM, IBM PL/I for VSE, IBM

  123.           COBOL for MVS & VM, IBM COBOL for VSE, AD/Cycle (R) C/370 (TM), and
  124.           IBM C/C++ for MVS/ESA (TM)).  Some advantages of PL/I with Language
  125.           Environment include flexible run-time options, faster and easier
  126.           interlanguage communication (ILC) support, dynamic ILC for all
  127.           systems and subsystems, and a common condition handling architecture.
  128.           These functions and, in particular, the ILC support provided by
  129.           Language Environment, allow host PL/I programmers to reuse code.  By
  130.           conforming to Language Environment, PL/I for MVS & VM and PL/I for
  131.           VSE can minimize new development and make it easier to share code
  132.           between applications.  This reduces the cost of PL/I application
  133.           development, test, and maintenance while helping to improve code
  134.           quality.

  140.           is used as an integration point for the OS/2 development environment

  142.           the OS/2 Workplace Shell (R). IBM PL/I for OS/2, when used with IBM's
  143.           TeamConnection, provides a powerful, comprehensive team development
  144.           environment.  IBM PL/I for OS/2 works with TeamConnection to store
  145.           PL/I source and executable files and to build PL/I applications.
  146.           TeamConnection provides version control and change management.
  147.                  IBM PL/I Set for AIX supports both client and server
  148.           application development on AIX, providing an integrated set of tools.
  149.           This includes a customizable editor and debugger.  The new AIX PL/I
  150.           environment is consistent and compatible with the OS/2 environment
  151.           and is integrated to the common desktop environment (CDE) on AIX.
  152.                  IBM PL/I for OS/2 and IBM PL/I Set for AIX are excellent
  153.           choices for creating client/server applications.  They also provide a
  154.           means for moving development work to the workstation for applications
  155.           targeted to run on the host system.  Testing can be done on the
  156.           workstation with only the final system testing being done on the
  157.           actual target (host in this case) system.  IBM's approach, with the
  158.           final edit, compile and debug capability on the host, allows this
  159.           final testing to take place in a powerful and supported environment.

  161.           providing function that makes it easy to move programs between the

  421.           TERMS AND CONDITIONS
  422.                  The terms and conditions for IBM PL/I for OS/2 as previously
  423.           announced (refer to Software Announcements 294-338 and 295-004)
  424.           licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement are unaffected by
  425.           this announcement except as noted below.
  426.           SOFTWARE ADVANTAGE FOR WORKSTATIONS -- UPGRADE PROTECTION:  The
  427.           announced program is eligible as an entitled upgrade.  Entitled
  428.           customers will be provided with a no-charge program package and a
  429.           Proof of Entitlement authorizing right to copy equal to the number of
  430.           programs protected.  Shipment will follow general availability.
  431.           PROGRAM SERVICES:  Effective immediately, program services,
  432.           previously announced as discontinued on June 24, 1995, are extended
  433.           until September 5, 1996.
  434.           GETTING STARTED PERIOD:  A 60-day getting started period is provided
  435.           by the Personal Systems Support Family for the first license in an
  436.           enterprise location, site, or centralized help desk.
