  86. OVERVIEW  DESCRIPTION
  87.           WHY REPLICATION?
  88.           Businesses today are benefiting from replicating data across a wide
  89.           range of applications.  Businesses can:
  90.           o   REENGINEER BUSINESS PROCESSES -- Many businesses are moving data
  91.               and applications to the place of the business transaction to
  92.               improve business cycle times and customer responsiveness.
  93.               Frequently, these applications must share data with legacy
  94.               applications on the host.  A replication solution can
  95.               automatically deliver the shared data to the target platform
  96.               while accommodating data restructuring and high-currency
  97.               requirements and minimizing network load and network availability
  98.               requirements.
  99.           o   IMPROVE DECISION MAKING -- Businesses are looking to increase
  100.               their competitiveness by increasing their employees'
  101.               decision-making authority.  To give employees the information
  102.               they need to make effective, accurate decisions, businesses are
  103.               building decision-support databases and data warehouses.  These
  104.               new decision-support databases are designed to assist in
  105.               day-to-day decision-making activities, from determining what
  106.               items to stock in various stores to identifying to which
  107.               customers new products should be marketed.  Replication
  108.               technology can support decision-support applications by improving
  109.               data availability, data access performance, and data usability.
  110.           o   SPEED APPLICATION DEPLOYMENT -- It is estimated that over 50% of
  111.               the existing application backlog can be addressed through
  112.               packaged, off-the-shelf applications.  The majority of these
  113.               applications are based on the relational model and use standard
  114.               SQL.  Data replication enables many customers to utilize these
  115.               applications by mapping, reformatting, and delivering data from
  116.               legacy environments to relational databases.
  117.

  120. DATA BASE : ALET                                                     PAGE:    3
  121.
  122.
  123.           o   INCREASE ONLINE THROUGHPUT -- To accommodate business growth,
  124.               customers may need to off-load query processing to make room for
  125.               increasing transaction processing requirements.  Offloading query
  126.               processing reduces contention that impacts online transaction
  127.               processing (OLTP) response time.
  128.           o   IMPROVE SYSTEM AVAILABILITY -- Businesses are being driven closer
  129.               and closer to 24 x 7 availability to maintain competitiveness and
  130.               satisfy customer demands.  This puts significant pressure on the
  131.               batch window.  The batch window often accommodates planned
  132.               outages, such as database reorganization.  Replication can create
  133.               backup systems to which access can be redirected during such
  134.               planned outages.  Replication can help eliminate extract
  135.               processing from your batch workloads by replicating data, in the
  136.               background, throughout the day.
  137.           o   SUPPORT AUDIT REQUIREMENTS -- Some customers are faced with
  138.               increasingly stringent audit requirements.  Years' worth of
  139.               information must be kept that details who changed what and when.
  140.               Replication may provide necessary audit information, including
  141.               user ID and other transaction details, in archive histories that
  142.               can be easily accessed as required.
  143.           o   ACCOMMODATE MIXED ENVIRONMENTS -- Businesses are migrating
  144.               applications from legacy systems or replicating data between
  145.               multivendor environments to reduce application development time,
  146.               reduce application maintenance costs, or consolidate data
  147.               following corporate acquisitions or mergers.  Replication can
  148.               assist by allowing data to be shared across a mix of data stores.
  149.           IBM'S DATA REPLICATION SOLUTION
  150.           IBM's Data Replication solution is a set of modular components that
  151.           gives you the flexibility to tailor the replication environment to
  152.           your needs.  The component products are:
  153.           o   DataPropagator Relational -- provides refresh and update
  154.               propagation among the DB2 family of databases.  Refresh replaces
  155.               the entire contents of a copy from the source; Update transfers
  156.               only the changes that occurred since the last copy.
  157.           o   DataPropagator NonRelational -- provides update propagation on
  158.               MVS systems from IMS (TM) to DB2 and supports coexistence between
  159.               IMS and DB2 with bidirectional propagation.
  160.           o   DataRefresher -- provides refresh support from a wide variety of
  161.               MVS and VM sources to the DB2 family.
  162.           o   DataHub -- provides a single control point for administering the
  163.               replication environment.
  164.           o   DataJoiner -- provides a multiserver database supporting
  165.               transparent read and write of multivendor stores, enabling for
  166.               replication between multivendor databases.
  167.                  Key features of IBM's Data Replication solution include:
  168.           o   Versatile infrastructure to support operational, informational
  169.               and mobile environments
  170.                      Varying applications levy different requirements on the
  171.               replication system.  For example, operational applications tend
  172.               to require frequent synchronization with limited data
  173.               enhancement, while informational applications often require more
  174.               stable data with complex data manipulation.  IBM's solution

  180.
  181.               gracefully spans these domains, providing a reusable and
  182.               extensible replication infrastructure for rapid response to
  183.               evolving business demands.
  184.                      In mobile computing environments, connections are
  185.               infrequent and unpredictable.  Key to supporting mobile computing
  186.               is the ability to initiate all data transfers from the mobile
  187.               unit, whether downloading from a central server or uploading for
  188.               consolidated processing.  IBM supports both source site-initiated
  189.               and target site-initiated data transfers, which are required for
  190.               mobile computing.  Additionally, administration can be centrally
  191.               managed, then asynchronously executed.
  192.           o   Broad legacy data support that lets businesses leverage existing
  193.               assets for client/server environments
  194.                      The IBM Data Replication solution lets you bring data from
  195.               IMS databases, DB2 databases, VSAM datasets, and flat files to
  196.               the DB2 family of databases across MVS, VM, VSE, OS/400 (R), AIX,
  197.               HP-UX, the Solaris Operating Environment, and OS/2 platforms.
  198.           o   Efficient operations to protect performance-sensitive production
  199.               systems
  200.                      Because the source data for replication is likely to be in
  201.               your production systems, IBM has designed its replication
  202.               solution to minimize impact to OLTP performance.  Changes are
  203.               read from the database log or journal to minimize locking
  204.               contention for source tables.  Batched commit processing
  205.               minimizes forced I/O activity.
  206.           o   Scalable design that fosters smooth growth
  207.                      In replication environments, scalability means much more
  208.               than just the ability to run on bigger hardware.  Scalability
  209.               means you can run in any environment from the smallest to the
  210.               largest, across many network types, with a varying number of
  211.               database servers and varying amounts of data, all with minimal
  212.               impact on database, network, and personnel resources.  IBM's Data
  213.               Replication solution is designed for such scalability.
  214.           o   Flexible delivery approaches to control network load
  215.                      As businesses distribute data, one of the most difficult
  216.               challenges is that of managing the network.  IBM provides
  217.               flexibility in data distribution including:
  218.               -   Subset distribution through join views to subset data by
  219.                   values not in the replicated data itself
  220.               -   Eliminating hot-spot effects from the network load
  221.               -   Summarizing data before rather than after the data transfer
  222.               -   Providing fan-out replication where copies can be made from
  223.                   other copies for large-scale distribution
  224.               -   Providing synchronization control on a copy-by-copy basis
  225.           o   Data enhancement features to make data more meaningful to end
  226.               users
  227.                      Data should be customized for the target application.
  228.               IBM's Data Replication solution supports subsetting by rows and
  229.               columns, calculating new columns, translating data from encoded
  230.               formats to descriptive formats, summarizing data, joining data,
  231.               or any other transformation that can be expressed using SQL.
  232.           o   Easy-to-administer products to speed deployment and minimize
  233.
  234.

  237.
  238.
  239.               system maintenance costs
  240.                      Businesses are looking for offerings that can be
  241.               implemented quickly and be automated to minimize impact to
  242.               existing staff.  IBM provides GUIs, allowing sources and targets
  243.               to be defined with point-and-click operations.  Table allocation
  244.               and initialization are handled automatically.  The replication
  245.               system can be changed dynamically without impacting the entire
  246.               replication network.  And, best of all, existing applications
  247.               continue to run without changing, recompiling, rebinding, or
  248.               relinking.
  249.           o   Architected interfaces to support interoperability between
  250.               multivendor environments
  251.                      Heterogeneity in a customer's database environment is
  252.               common.  IBM's Data Replication solution addresses the
  253.               multivendor environment as follows:
  254.               -   IBM's architecture is built on standard SQL to leverage the
  255.                   database engine capabilities for data enhancement, network
  256.                   connectivity, and data security.
  257.               -   An architected data staging area supports interoperability
  258.                   among multivendor databases, between heterogeneous data
  259.                   models, and among products from independent software vendors.
  260.               -   IBM replication products directly support multivendor sources
  261.                   and targets through IBM's multidatabase server product,
  262.                   DataJoiner.
  263.           DATAPROPAGATOR RELATIONAL
  264.           DataPropagator Relational provides replication between relational
  265.           sources and targets and defines the architecture for the IBM Data
  266.           Replication solution.  The components of DataPropagator Relational
  267.           are described below.
  268.                  The ADMINISTRATION component, DataPropagator Relational for
  269.           OS/2, together with DataHub for OS/2 provide the GUI that you use to:
  270.           o   Register tables as sources
  271.           o   Create and maintain copy definitions
  272.           o   Grant registration and subscription privileges to users
  273.                  The CAPTURE components provide update propagation, capturing
  274.           changes made to data in registered source tables by reading the
  275.           database log or journal.  They place the captured changes into
  276.           staging tables.  Capture components include:
  277.           o   Capture for MVS
  278.           o   Capture for OS/400
  279.           o   Capture for AIX
  280.           o   Capture for OS/2
  281.                  The APPLY  components read the changed data, previously
  282.           captured and stored in a staging table, and apply them to the target
  283.           tables.  Apply components can also read data directly from source
  284.           tables, for example, for a full refresh.  Supporting update and
  285.           refresh copying provides greater flexibility and automation in a
  286.           replication environment.
  287.                  Apply components also tailor the data to your specifications
  288.           as they copy data to the targets.  You can:
  289.           o   Create new columns
  290.           o   Summarize data
  291.
  292.
  293.
  294. DATA BASE : ALET                                                     PAGE:    6
  295.
  296.
  297.           o   Join data
  298.           o   Translate data
  299.                  The Apply components allow you to create:
  300.           o   Point-in-time tables, which represent source data at a particular
  301.               point in time
  302.           o   History tables, which contain a record of information over time
